“A frieze of horses....”

Owner description: This Prehistoric cave from the Magdalenian era lies just a few kilometres east of Les Eyzies on the right bank of the Beune river. It was classified as a listed site in 1926 in recognition of its unique sculptures. The frieze covers all but two metres of the 15-metre deep cave and features horses, bison and deer, some of which overlap. Originally, the sculptures were probably coloured since traces of ochre pigment were found during earlier archaeological digs. The remarkable depth and vibrancy of these sculptures carved with flint tools make the Cap-Blanc Cave one of the greatest masterpieces of Prehistoric art from the Upper Palaeolithic period. A museographical area around the friezes gives an overview of Cap-Blanc life and art. Cave of the Vézère valley designated world heritage site by UNESCO. Open:> All the year with prior reservation.> Low season: to visit the cave, contact the reception centre at the Font-de-Gaume cave in Les Eyzies.> High season from 15th May to 15th September: reception on the site from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last visit at 5 p.m.). Closed:> Saturdays.> 1st January, 1st May, 1st November, 11th November and 25th December. not as impressive as the other caves I visited--only one room, a frieze of horses, legs of which had eroded...lots of imagination had to be used....get tickets early from the Font de Gaume ticket office if you haven't reserved months in advance...

We visited this site after two others, so it paled in comparison, yet is an important one to see. We also sat through a long French tour of the very small site. The guide knew English but only once provided a little tidbit for us. We had asked for an English tour but none were available.

After visiting the cave paintings nearby we were interested in seeing the pre-historic sculptures carved in the rock. The carvings were truly wonderful but the staff at this site are definitely and almost militantly geared to serving only French speaking tourists. Our groups was composed of over 75% English speaking people and although the local French civil servant tour guide was capable of speaking very good English (as we found out after having the temerity to speak to each other in English about some of the carvings after politely listening to her go on and on for 40 minutes without offering a single word in explanation in English). It is a bit of drive to this site and there are no English tours. I would recommend checking out the pictures of the site on the internet and save yourself the time, expense, and frustration of visiting this potentially fantastic site.
