“Nice hotel and location.”
Reviewed 13 October 2010

20% discount on a double/twin room the weekend we stayed. Clean, comfortable and spacious room and excellent value. Had a good night's sleep on a superb double bed. The hotel is conveniently located for the restaurants and sights of Pau. Air con a trifle noisy but problem easily solved by switching it off and opening the windows.

The hotel looked pretty shabby from the outside, so when we first entered our room, we were pleasantly surprised. The decor was decent. But that was the only decent thing about the hotel. The shower/bathtub didn't drain properly so we had to shower with our feet in soapy/grubby water; the hair dryer made terrible noise but did very little drying; the room was tiny; we could hear our neighbours really well; the view from the window was the air conditioner vent (or something like that), so even though we had selected a non-smoking floor, we could smell everything from outside (even when the window was closed); the bed-side light kept on flickering even when turned off (so we had to take off the light bulb). Basically, the hotel had been recently renovated but has been poorly maintained since. The only nice thing was the decor, which was superficially nice (just like the staff of the hotel). Moreover the hotel does not have parking, so we had to park at the public parking nearby (recommended by the hotel staff), which cost us 10 euros (from afternoon - next morning). Did not try their breakfast, as there were plenty of cafes nearby. We got a baby bed which was so terrible, even our daughter the ever good sleeper didn't sleep well (the mattress was non-existent). I guess we can't complain about that, since they did not charge us for this). All in all, bad experience at this hotel, if we were to come back to this nice little town we would definitely look for another hotel.

The hotel was situated close to everything in the town, perfect location. We got a rate of 44 euros per night (there is an additional town tax to pay per person per night, but thats small) which is just for the room. Breakfast available at 7 euros or 15 euros per person, which we didnt sample so can't comment.

We arrived mid morning, room check in is at 2pm so we left our bags and went and explored the vacinity a little. The rooms were tiny, very basic but clean. We were only just able to walk past the end of the bed, between that and the wall. Wardrobe coathangers were an absolute pain, hidden by a fixed partition and awkward to get to when trying to fix back in.

The bathroom for the main part was clean apart from the bottom of the bath was full of what appeared to be dust! A tap shower unit, which you couldnt stand underneath as once water pressure on it "dropped" so had to hand hold< though the water was hot.

We backed onto the airconditioning units, and it was extremely noisey, meaning we had to put up with the mundane noise of the room aircon rather than have a window open at night which was a shame as a breeze would have been welcome.
No milk (not even uht) provided in the rooms, and coffee, hot choc etc can be purchased at reception of 2 euros.
Note: if you have clothes that need ironing take a travel iron, nothing available at the hotel.

Most of the reception staff were very friendly and spoke english, usually a welcoming smile and questions were answered. We didnt ask them for much information tourist wise, and whilst lots of leaflets available alot were out of date or not relevant to Pau which was a shame.

This hotel is ok for one/maybe two nights but due to how small and basic the rooms are, would not recommend a longer stay for the money....unless the larger rooms are much bigger (we didnt get to sample them).

Left luggage at the hotel is not locked away or behind the reception desk, it is left in the small area in front of the desk...not overly secure but guess that staff would only be away from the desk for a few minutes at any time. Lock your bags up is probably the best thing to do.

The location is excellent, close to shopping and everything. The staff is friendly. We stayed there 3 nights, 1 night in a room on the 2nd floor and another 2 nights in a room on the 4th floor. The only major complain was that the walls was very thin. We were woken up several times by people talking next door. We were also guilty of talking too loud and disturbed our neighbor next door the next morning. The room on the 4th floor was much better and quiet. However I don't know if the insulation was better or there were no one else on that floor.
The hotel offers breakfast. Quite a bargain for 7 euros with a nice spread of fruits, nuts, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cold cuts, cheese, coffee and bread. Normally in other hotels, if you opt for petit dejeuner, you might get only a coffee, 1 juice and 2 pieces of bread.

Clean and tidy hotel,
pleasant helpful staff ,
cleaned regularly,
small but adequate room with air con, ( who wants to stay in a room all day with such a lovely town to explore ?)
Good location , just off the main square
yet quiet,
Bed was comfy ,
shower and toilet very good ( even a bath if wanted)
an abundance of places to eat / drink nearby,
local parks to sit out in/ or the main square.
Decent price (compared to the local competition)

*** if we go back to Pau I would definitely look to book again ***

Our room was small -- not abnormally small by European standards -- but only 5 minutes walking distance from the Chateau/Castle area where all of the restaurants and cafes were located. The hotel and room were not "special" in appearance or charm, but adequate. The street the hotel was on was not open to traffic when we were there, so the room was very quiet. It was nice to have air conditioning in mid-July as well. If you are looking for four star comfort, you might look elsewhere, but this was a nice place for a one night stopover for sure.

Although we had difficulty finding the hotel because the street was closed to normal traffice, once we stopped and asked a local, they quickly pointed us to the hotel. The parking is only 1 block away under the central plaza.

The rate was very reasonable compared to other downtown hotels in Pau, and since we really were more interested in location over deluxe room accomodations, it worked for us.
