The hotel looks like an old station hotel in France but it backs onto the river and has a lovely position near the centre of town. Car parking is over the road. It was a hot night and France had just won their latest World cup match and we had a road side room, so we had to choose between extreme heat and extreme noise. Unfortunately the room had been rented out to a dog owner a few days previously. some hair and some little jumping friends had been left behind. The room had not been cleaned well and the fleas were on the 'counterpane' If any survived my attacks they did not bite!
The hotel was full and breakfast overwhelmed it, The coffee machine kept failing to grind the beans and the breakfast room overflowed into the bar.
The receptionist was exceptional, she spoke at least three languages and dealt with breakfast customers with confidence and aplomb, even some irate Australians were calmed by her. But the hotel staffing was not set up to deal with a 'full house'. and definitely one struggling coffee machine was inadequate.
It was a low priced hotel

Room Tip: Try and get one overlooking the river.

Used just a quick overnighter this location was great with the old town just across the bridge.

We had a room on the third floor (no lift) with a view over the river to the cathedral, the window was very small though as we were effectively in an attic room. Reasonably clean and comfortable.

They were carrying out building works in the bar so all of that was closed and as a consequence the whole place was a little dusty.

Breakfast was the low point . . . no fresh croissants just basic toast and couple of yogurts.

No parking but we managed to park around the corner.

We stayed 2 nights in this hotel using it as a base to explore Perigueux and it vicinity (Brantome, St. Jean de Cole, Hautefort). Many good things should be mentioned:
● You can’t beat the location – Hotel des Barris is across the river from St. Font cathedral. You only have to walk across the ancient bridge to be in the very heart of Perigueux. The only hotel that has comparable location is IBIS but I still prefer the location of Hotel des Barris.
● Plenty of free parking across the road from the building.
● The building itself is 18th century house with rooms that have exposed-beam ceiling
● Some rooms have river view, though we stayed in the room that overlooked back street
● Clean, good-size en-suite rooms with good comfortable beds
● Free WiFi that is good enough for video Skype with little-to-no noise
● Very reasonable prices which makes this hotel good value for the money
● Our room was very quiet though I can imagine that some rooms facing main road can be noisy
● There are truly non-smoking rooms in this hotel (ours included) which are at a premium in hotels anywhere in France.
I can’t judge breakfast since we didn’t try one as we slept too long in the mornings. On the flip side:
● The reception desk is open very few hours from 9 to noon and from 4 to 8pm. In other times there is no way you can get help. Note that you have to arrive while someone is there
● My broken French was not always enough to communicate effectively, so I had to fall back to English which is spoken by some staffers at reception desk but not by others.
● Rooms are starting to look a little tired and may use some upgrading
● Our bathroom had a dangerous step in the middle of it – where normally you wouldn’t expect any level change. My wife tripped over it in the middle of the night.

I chose this ideal little hotel for its location and because it successfully optimizes price and quality.
We were in the top most floor and lugged the suitcases up three flights. Never mind that! The view out the window to the cathedral was great. I had been worried about street noise, but there was none that was bothersome.
Great little place with a sweet bunch of folks running it.

Room Tip: Top floor picked on purpose. It has the potential to be too hot. However, we were there in Septembe...

The hotel bar/dining room was being refurbished so one has to allow for this. However, the location was fine on the south side of the river so a gentle stroll into the main city centre.
Our rooms were at the top of the building being built into the eaves and consequentlly lacked a littlein natural daylight as my room only had a large velux window so no view of anything other than sky! They were large and although clean the rather dark older style mix and match furnishings and lack of light made the room feel rather tired. The lack of a lift would be a problem for some too as it was some trek up to the top.
On the plus side the staff were very friendly and helpful and at less than €50 per room I have no complaints.

Room Tip: There is no lift so bear this in mind.

The rooms are clean and spacious - well equipped no problems. It is easy to park nearby and walking distance to the old town. Some reviewers have said the area is noisy - it wasn't on the friday night we spent there recently. We didn't try the breakfast (slept in too long on our comfy bed)

We spent 3 nights at this hotel as a family of four (children aged 10 & 6), and found our stay very reasonable and comfortable. The location is great, within easy walking distance of the town centre. The breakfast is simple but adequate. The rooms had comfortable beds with fresh white linen/towels. We appreciated the 'self-contained' layout of our two rooms. Although on a main road into town, we didn't feel disturbed by traffic noise and didn't encounter any late night noise. We would return to this hotel again.
