“A taste of luxury but at a price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2014

We stayed at this hotel and have mixed feelings about the experience. Firstly the good points : beautifully appointed bedrooms which are air conditioned and very good bathrooms. Amazing views of the ocean below ( from bedrooms provided you have paid the extra charge ) and from the gardens and pool. So far so good. So what was not so good? Well firstly the attitude of some of the staff was rather unfriendly and dismissive and not what one expects when paying ( as we were ) some 250 euros per night for a double room room only ( breakfast was an additional 17 euros per person ) .Not all the staff fall into this category. Some were very friendly and welcoming but unfortunately our experience was that they were in the minority. However the biggest problem were the bar prices and the restaurant prices. We had lunch one day which for three persons totalled some 80 euros ( one of us had salad and the other two had burger and chips . We also had a bottle of wine if my memory is correct was 27 euros ) They don't serve any snacks ( which we thought was surprising as not everyone wants a sit down formal meal every lunchtime ) and so if you want to eat at the hotel you have to dine in the restaurant ( either inside or outside on the terrace or in the gardens ). The alternative would be to walk into the centre ( which takes about 20 - 25 minutes and is down hill going into the centre and uphill coming back ) . We only stayed a couple of days and I dread to think how much you would spend if you stayed there a week ( or more ) and if you dined in the restaurant every day. The dinner prices would I expect be considerably higher than the lunch prices. Would we stay here again? Probably not due to a combination of staff attitude and high prices. It's a shame as the location is second to none ( provided you don't mind being outside of the centre ) and the bedrooms are very comfortable. They would not in my view need to do much to ensure a return stay : friendlier and less dismissive staff, lower bar and restaurant prices and snacks at lunchtime

We stayed in the self catering apartments for a week in August this year. The hotel and surrounding grounds are beautiful. The swimming pool, albeit a little small for a family hotel, was in a fantastic position. This is what you are paying for. The apartments, which were very spacious (ours was a 3 person accommodation - although I am not sure I would have put anyone in the small room - used it as a dressing area!) the place could do with brightening up with some new paint and new doors on the wardrobe. The bathroom too was a bit dated. We did feel like second class citizens being in the apartments and had very little to non existent contact with the hotel staff. They were not particularly forthcoming or helpful. The ground floor apartment was great as it meant we could walk from the patio straight to the pool. We had no 3. The kitchen was well stocked with equipment, but only has a hob and not an oven. It was a very peaceful place, even though they have children and dogs around. It takes a 20 minute slow walk into the town centre - great placer with a fab vibe. The walk back is up hill and dark, it would be nice if the hotel put some lights in for their guests.

Room Tip: We had room 3, which doesn't get the sun on the patio in the afternoon - although a great size a...

This is a lovely setting but we were disappointed on several counts. We spent six nights at the Residence part of La Reserve which offers self catering. Our apartment was for 3 people and we were 2 but it only had a small double bed in a windowless alcove and an equally small sofa bed. For 300 euros a night I expected a decent bed! I also expected the advertised sea view but it was barely visible even from the terrace. The staff were all charming and offered to upgrade us for 3 nights.

Spectacular views over the ocean so a sea view room is a must. Garden view rooms are postage stamp size and overpriced. The walk into town and along the coast is very pleasant. Hotel is set in an exclusive residential area. The pool is in a great setting but tired and the pool beds not that comfortable.
Friendly staff.

Room Tip: Sea view a must

Having read the reviews I was expecting to arrive at a tired 80s style hotel and was pleased that TripAdvisor had lowered my expectations such that I was only pleased.

Stayed in a Standard Room that was quite small but with a nice bathroom and good bed and only downside was the interconnecting door which was not well insulated so could hear people in the next room.

Negatives are all gone. The food in the restaurant was awesome and the drinks consistently priced for a hotel of that time. We had steak and it was one of best I have had. The breakfast in the morning was the best I have had in a French hotel too!

Now for the location. 20 mins coastal walk into St Jean de Luz which is one of best seaside towns in France and, with the mountains behind, one of the most picturesque! The location on the cliff top is amazing and the smell and sound of the sea added to the enjoyment and with lots of space around the hotel.

The infinity swimming pool was the most relaxing place to chill and that will bring me back here. In fact we are coming back with the kids and staying in one of the apartments.

If you are expecting a 5* hotel for 4* prices and unwilling to spend 10 euros on a G&T or 5 euros on a coke don't bother. If you want a nice hotel, at a fair price in one of the best coastal spots in France - La Reserve is hard to beat. Oh yes and all of the staff could not do enough for us and with a young and welcoming vibe.

Pleasant enough hotel well-placed for the interesting rocky coast. Good standards of service and food. The place feels a bit 'tired' but falls well within the acceptable limits. Nice pool if small and populated by the inevitable boisterous kiddies. Bar prices seem high.
Dinner in the restaurant was very competent with a number if excellent interpretations of local Basque dishes and a creditable wine list.

Room Tip: Main part more suitable for adults. The annex contains teenage larva.

After a week of very rustic accomodations in the pyrenees, La Reserve is VERY relaxing. You should know that for the price and the expectations the place is a bit tired. The pool is probably from the 1970s. But the view is spectacular. We hiked down past the pool all the way down to the water with my 6 and 8 year olds. They loved it. (You cannot access the water for swimming- very dangerous from here). The restaurant was truly excellent for dinner- my kids LOVED the chicken an d veal. The service in the restaurant can be extremely slow. Very comfortable bed. If it's raining there is an indoor playground, Biarritz aquarium and some other activities. If you love to surf you might want to stay in Hondaye instead- AWESOME surfing - esp for kids.

Room Tip: Room 58 is beautiful. Has comfortable pull-out sofa which my kids slept in.
