“A Break from the Beach - A Step Back in Time!”
Reviewed 18 July 2013

The church hosted the wedding of Louis XIV and Maria Teresa in 1600 which sealed the alliance between France and Spain. The building has wonderful woodwork. If you want quiet get there early before the tour groups.

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed 23 June 2013

Inside the church has a feel of shipbuilding with ceiling. Basque church with wooden balconies where in old days the men were segregated. This is church where Spain and France knotted an alliance with King of France marrying the daughter of Spain's king.

“Lots of history here”
Reviewed 21 June 2013

St Jean de Luz enjoyed its 'fifteen minutes of fame' at the heart of the western world in 1659-1660 with the signing of the Peace of the Pyrenees between France and Spain just down the coast at Hendaye, and then a royal wedding in 1660. The church was then under construction but squeezed in Louis XIV, Maria Theresa and the two courts for the ceremony. One interesting more modern touch is the carved nineteenth century ship hanging above the main aisle as a tribute to the maritime tradition of the town. This vessel has both sails and paddle-wheels.
