“Basic hotel that needs improvement.”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

Mmmm. I will try to be positive. We arrived after a super long 8 hour drive (with toddler) from Epernay so we were looking to crash out in a cool room.

The hotels exterior made me feel a little concerned but as they say never judge a book by a cover. The hotel is under renovation so the reception area / elevator I'm guessing is still to be updated . Our room was on a renovated floor (although it felt like the rooms were renovated as cheaply as possible) I had booked a 'family room' expecting space but there wasn't really any more space. The double bed takes up most of the room and once we got our luggage in the room and the baby crib we had no room to really move.

The air-con wasn't working when we arrived and apparently was a problem throughout the hotel. We were offered another un-renovated room, but the air-con wasn't working in that either so we decided to take a walk around the town and when we returned it was fixed. Thankfully.

We skipped breakfast as we would have to eat in a back room on a sunny morning (the roof terrace was closed due to the renovation) and decided to buy from a bakery and eat on a cafe terrace.

Unfortunately the hotel was not for us and although the staff were lovely we have stayed in beautiful places for around the same budget price in France and left the hotel not really wanting to come back.

Stayed here a couple of times now, really convenient location within 5 minutes walk up through the old town to the cathedral square. Rooms are nice, clean and modern. Breakfast buffet is excellent with a good choice of usual French croissants, pain au chocolat etc, bread, boil your own eggs machine, hams, cheese, yoghurts etc. This has the added benefit of being served on the lovely roof terrace, though unfortunately this was undergoing refurbishement when we visited (June 2014). Terrace gives lovely view of the old town, cathedral and Puy de Dome behind. The hotel also has secure underground parking, which is free for motorbikes, not sure about cars.

Room Tip: ones on the road side are slightly noisier, but great views.

Service good and no queues. Room clean and well decorated. Room breakfast basic but prompt and good value.

Aircon didnt work in my room. It seems some rooms it worked and some it didnt. They offered to move me - but why book anyone into a room where that doesnt work? Do you have to select which functions are not going to work? Odd. Questions over maintenance.

Room is the type where the sink etc are in the bedroom. So with no aircon, after a shower it becomes a sauna so you start the day perspiring heavily.

Good central location although since my room faced the street it was v noisy if i opened the window. So v hot at night.

I'd stay there again but check that all facilities worked before unpacking.

Room Tip: Ask if the aircon is working. It seems floor 5 is for their preferred customers.

Hôtel des Puys I, Responsable relations clients at Best Western Plus Hotel Litteraire Alexandre Vialatte, responded to this review, 15 June 2014
Good afternoon from Inter-Hôtel des Puys,

Thank you to take time to give us your opinion about our hôtel. We are happy that you are satisfied of our breakfast, our rooms and the service.

Indeed, we had a problem with air conditionning in some rooms but you could change room. I understand that you didn't appreciate that we rent a room without air conditionning.
When you will come back in our hotel, if you prefer, ask us a room overlooking the yard.
We make all our possible for our clients but when there is an unexpected, it's difficult .

Waiting for see you when you come back to Clermont-Ferrand,
Kind regards.

The lady in the reception was very welcoming, she gave us a lot of useful information on how to get to the places and recommended few restaurants (We already had on mind some, so we did not try them).
Room was clean and size was ok. Bed was comfortable. It was in the 5th floor with a very nice view on the Cathedral and Puys de Dome. Furniture was modern.
Parking is a plus!
It is a good value for your money.( Better price if you book directly from the hotel web site).

This is the second time we've stayed here and on both occasions it has been very enjoyable. Very comfortable room with good soundproofed walls and window. Reception staff found us a restaurant that was open on bank holiday! Breakfast terrace is being renovated but the breakfast was excellent as before with some delicious local cheese.

Room Tip: Fifth floor has view of Cathedral and Puy de Dome.

Not a flashy hotel. They are going through renovations and the rooms are quite nice. It was a good value for the quality and comfort of the room.

The restaurant and lobby much be some of the last parts of the renovation. If the rooms are any indication, the hotel will have a fabulous feel once refit is completed.

The internet is complimentary and decent speed.

Suggestion to hotel: find better refrigerators. They barely keep anything below room temp.

Room Tip: Rooms along the front of the hotel are nice. They get evening sun. The street can be a little loud b...

We stood one night in a "big family room" with 2 adults and 2 children. Staff is very helpful and speaks reasonable english. Space in the suite was well, 2 rooms, each with TV (only french channels!!), this is a standard in smaller city hotels, no surprise for us, is always the same, a lot of French people still believes they are the center of the universe, like when Louis XIV was in power. So, why to offer foreign language channels in the hotel?

Breakfast is ok, enough and tasty, nothing to criticize nor highlight, small variety, but sufficient.

The hotel has a own parking, but you cannot book it, so during high season you can be in trouble when arriving late and you want to take just a small bag for one night, leaving all the baggage in the car.

Location is good, just on the limit where the old town starts. to the cathedral you have a nice walk through the small streets. Takes around 10 minutes. Small supermarket and food snacks are closed to the hotel.

The only annoying topic was, that we forgot a cap in the room. I contacted immediately (we had checked and left already) the hotel reception from the car, but no one found the nice cap. Isn't it strange? this is the reason for the lower rating.

Room Tip: Make sure you can deal with the uncertainty of the parking.
