I spent 3 nights at this hotel in room 402, while attending a conference hosted by the local University. I feel it was very expensive for the quality of stay. It cost 78 euro per night for a single room. The room was very basic indeed and even though they boast a renovation in 2011, the rooms still look dated and tired. My walls were covered in horrible wallpaper which had been painted over. The bathroom was old and definitely in need of an update. The bed was quite hard and uncomfortable and the pillows were too flat. My bedside table was badly marked and the drawer didn’t open, there were no sockets near the mirror and I was missing a light bulb in the light above the wardrobe making it very difficult to see inside. The walls were quite thin and the hotel is situated on a main avenue so there was quite a bit of traffic noise. Most of all I missed tea and coffee making facilities in the room and they didn’t even leave a bottle of water out for arrival. Additionally, toiletries’ consisted of 1 small soap and 1 tiny packet of shower gel. I found staff in the hotel a bit hit and miss. I had a couple of encounters with a very rude gentleman but some of the breakfast staff were really lovely. Breakfast was a positive part of the stay with a nice variety for a continental breakfast. Having said that, I would like to have seen a little more fresh fruit. Positives include the aircon system in the room and the fact that it was definitely clean and tidy. However, I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to a friend. The hotel is very handy for the Michelin Stadium and there are a few eating options nearby. Right by the stadium is McDonalds, Subway and a great Pasta bar. The centre of Clermont is about a 15 minute walk and well worth it for a look around the local shops with high quality goods. Eating out seems to be expensive, including the hotel restaurant. If you can afford to I would recommend staying elsewhere – there appears to be a nice Novotel across the road from Hotel Republique. On a final note if you are English speaking I would advise you to brush up on your basic French as I found communicating, both in the hotel, and in and around Clermont in general, difficult, with my few words of French. Neither were there any English channels on the TV in the room!

POSITIVE:

+ Extremely convenient location to Clermont-Ferrand city centre, the surrounding area and in particular the Stade Marcel-Michelin which was only 100 metres away.

+ Excellent value: If you are looking for a cheap place to stay where you don't have to worry about insects, noise, heat, cleanliness or any other problems, this is an obvious choice.

+ The room included small amenities which enhanced the experience. These include the air-conditioning, the ability to fully open the window and a large bed (which was in fact two smaller beds pushed together after further inspection).

+ The hotel is on one of the tram lines and the nearest stop is 100 metres away; this provides incredibly easy access to the city centre (which is a relatively lively place).

NEGATIVE:

- The room was VERY small; it was able to fit everything (furniture etc.) comfortably, but some may find the size to be a bit too tight. The bathroom is of average size.

- The shower stall was set up in such a way that when taking a shower, water is likely to get EVERYWHERE. (This is also partially attributable to high water pressure).

VERDICT:

This is a clean and good-value hotel that is well-situated if you want visit the city of Clermont-Ferrand or the surrounding area (i.e. Puy de Dôme) on a budget. The air-conditioning was very nice, but the ability to actually fully open the windows was a big plus. The only drawback is the size of the room, but if you can handle a little less floorspace, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying here.

Whilst not being in the town centre per say, this hotel is on the tramway line and 4 stops away from the cathedral. The hotel building is nothing great, but it offers clean rooms in a fairly quiet area of town. Being close to the rugby stadium, it may get a bit more animated on match evenings. The staff was discreet yet professional, the TV was big and the bed comfortable. Air conditioning and heating easily available from the central console in the room.

We booked a 'small room', which allowed us to pay a discounted rate. The room was still big enough for the both of us and our big luggages. Concerning the car park, there was enough room as well. There are a boulangerie and a MacDonalds and Subway within a five minutes walk. For travellers on a budget, I would recommend this hotel in a heart beat.

Room Tip: Select a small room to save more!

Picked up Inter-Hotels list of hotels from Carcassone Espace which was a very good hotel (see review). Got stuck in a horrific traffice gridlock at limoges and were way behind schedule and needed a place to stay the night on the way to Switzerland.

Rang hotel en-route and booked room. Arrived 6pm on a Saturday night apparently after a big football match at nearby stadium. A lot of intoxicated people in streets. Hotel had advertised a restaurant so being in need of a sleep and a meal hotel which is reasonably close to the highway seemed like a good choice.

Booked in (free parking and WiFi which is a +) and enquired about the opening time for restaurant. Restaurant CLOSED TONIGHT! OK no problem, asked guy at reception for restaurant recommendation which he kindly obliged Follwed his directions and found that we were located in a semi-light industrial area, nothing open.

After walking streets in darkness for about and hour opted for Mc Donalds which was the only premises open.

Maccas to the rescue - Yuk !. Apart from this unfortunate episode, the hotel was warm, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was a buffet style and very good, perhaps one of the best offered by any hotel we have encountered in France. Would I recommend? Yes, but make sure the restaurant is open!

My husband and I stayed at this hotel as part of a 3 week tour around France – we hadn’t pre-planned or booked anything, so all the hotels we stayed at were found along the way. If you’re doing a similar trip, I’d suggest picking up a Logis or Inter-Hotel guide (any hotel affliated to these 2 groups will have a full guide you can take away), as this was our starting point for finding hotels – all were about 2-star grade (equivalent to 3-star in UK).

We knew nothing about Clermont-Ferrand at all - it was just a convenient stopping point on our journey down to the south coast. We arrived quite late, but managed to get a room sorted at the Inter-Republique pretty quickly. The hotel also has a large secure car park, which was brilliant for us, and we checked in for 2 nights at a reasonable price.

Room had everything we needed and the staff were very friendly - especially the barman who was working late on Sat night when we came back from a night out in town. We ended up sitting in the bar having a drink and chat for a good hour!

Location of the hotel is good, right on one of the main roads into town. It is a bit of a long walk, but the new tramway has a stop within 200m of the hotel and it was very cheap and easy to use to get right into the heart of town.

We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant as we went into town, but we did have breakfast on our last morning there - nothing particularly special, just a standard continental breakfast, but had everything you'd expect. Only downside was that we noticed in one corner of the bar area (breakfast was quite informal and served in the bar rather than the formal dining room) there were some ants loitering. None of them were near/on the food, and it was about 29 degrees when we were there mid-summer, so I didn't think this was too big a deal.

As for Clermont-Ferrand, it's a bit of a hidden gem!!! All we'd read in the guidebooks was that it was quite a big student town and that historically the only thing it is famous for is being the home of Michelin tyres. But a lot of money has been spent in the last 3 years in tidying up the town centre and creating a big open space with cafes/bars and fountains etc. Plus the new tramway which runs around and across town. All this, and just a 15min drive away you have the Puy de Dome - an extinct volcano that you can visit for a great day out. It ended up being one of our favourite places from our 3 weeks around France.
