“Perfect Brittany Cottage”
Reviewed 4 February 2012

We stayed in Le Cidre for a week in September. It couldn't have been more charming and comfortable. The property is beautiful and peaceful. I kept wishing we had visited Le Gohic when our children were younger. There is so much to do with a beautiful pool, activity room, lots of games, etc. It would be a great place for a family reunion. As it was, it was just my husband and I, and we had a relaxing and enjoyable time. There was cider and a tradtional Brittany cake waiting when we arrived. We had bread delivered to the door every morning, which we loved. Lucile and Barry were warm and friendly and welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed talking to them. This is a really special place.

The only downside is that you have to drive every where. I usually prefer places where you can walk into a village or town. But Le Gohic is so nice, we thought it was a good tradeoff. We were really glad we chose to stay here.

My wife and I stayed at Le Gohic for a week in May 2011, immediately after Barry, Lucile and Helen took over the hamlet. We were so impressed with the accommodations, the hosts and the area in general that we've made plans to return for two weeks in Sept 2012 with another couple. We've made self-catering holidays the norm for 20 years and Le Gohic is at the top of our list.

We stayed in Le Puits and had friends over from England for a couple of nights. It was well suited for us with the extra half bath downstairs, allowing us all to get ready in the morning with minimal delay. The kitchen is well fitted out and was a delight to have when we returned with our bounty from the local markets. Lucile will provide you with bread & pastries from a local bakery if you wish...a good way to start the day.

We plan on L'Ecurie for our next trip as there will be more people involved and we loved the library area and the extra dining space for friends. The view from L'Ecurie over the farmlands is beautiful as well. Having the WIFI on site is wonderful. We were able to stay in touch with friends & family back in the USA via email and a Vonage app on my iPhone. It helped when it came to researching the next days destinations as well.

Le Gohic makes a good base for exploring most of Brittany. It's well within "day trip" range of most of Brittany's sites. We planned our direction of travel each day based on which town had a market that day. There are many wonderful discoveries to be made nearby. We were especially enamored of a patisserie in Baud that had macaroons rivaling many found in Paris...for half the cost. Good seafood is a Bretagne mainstay and in abundance at the local markets, as well as Belon oysters! Good restaurants are close as well...Barry & Lucile can direct you.

Stay at Le Gohic and you will be rewarded with a fun, relaxing holiday.

We, a family of 4, stayed for a week at Le Gohic as part of a group of almost 30 people. Our house, L'Ecurie, was lovely and the grounds are very nice, with plenty of activities for children.

Although Le Gohic is great for a large group of people on holiday, the lack of parking was an issue. Our group had 10 cars between us, but the designated parking area isn't sufficient for more than 5 cars and the owners didn't want us to park in front of the houses. However, the parking situation could easily be improved if the recycling area is moved and the owners create a parking area beside their own house for their own cars. The pool opening hours also need to be extended for those who likely an early morning or late evening swim.

In addition, although not everyone would agree with us, we would have preferred to pay a cleaning charge as part of the upfront cost rather than having the option of paying at the end or cleaning the house ourselves. When we are on holiday, we would prefer to know that our accommodation has been professionally cleaned rather than that the guests before might have done it.

Overall, we had a very enjoyable week at Le Gohic.

We rented one of the houses with two other couples for a week after Christmas - a great way to see in the New Year. Very comfortable accomodation with roaring log fires, cheery decorations and comfie sofas to snuggle into. Ample supplies of mistletoe available from the garden. Brisk walks to the local pub in the crisp Brittany air and we even had a beach barbecue to the bemusement of the (rare) passer-by.

Four years since we first stayed we were delighted to return to Le Gohic with our two young sons, one of whom had been born when we were last there.

We were initially disappointed that the Owners when we last stayed there had only very recently moved on. Although it would have been wonderful to Robin and Sheila, the new owners Lucile, Barry and their daughter Helene did a superb job of making us welcome and helping to ensure that we had a happy, safe and very enjoyable holiday. Lucile, Barry and Helene seem to have managed to keep everything that makes Le Gohic special but also add their unique touches.

We stayed in Le Cidre. Four bed and dog friendly. Everything that we could want was there - fridge, freezer cooker, storage, fully equiped kitchen, clean functional bathroom and satellite TV. If needed there is also central heating and a wood burner.

The hamlet is set in pretty rolling Breton countryside. It is beautifully presented, safe and fun for the kids to play in and well equiped with swings, trampoline, sand pit, boules, "club house" and swimming pool. We were blessed with two weeks of superb weather and for much of the time the boys were so happy being there, playing with new friends, going in the pool that there was no need or no desire to go anywhere.

A great time was had by all !

My wife and I booked Le Gohic with another couple in Sep 2010 (staying in Le Puits). It took me 7 year to get to Le Gohic and after I left I couldn't help but wonder why it took so long, as this is such a lovely place. Booking communications were done via email with Robin and Sheila and all questions were answered quickly and efficiently.

Looking at the travel options, we decided to get the Dover Calais ferry then take the long drive down to Le Gohic. This took about 7 hours with stops and was around 400 miles. I think next time I'd go for a longer crossing, so less driving. However, the ferry cost £60 return for a car and 4 adults, so you can't really grumble with that. Plus I found driving in France pretty easy and the road fairly quiet.

We knew we'd be pretty whacked after our drive, so Sheila put us in touch with Sally at Daisy Chain - daisy-chain@sfr.fr. They provide meals on arrival, so all you need to do is pop the food it in the oven. The food was so good we decided to arrange for another catered night later in the week (curry menu which was also excellent).

Back to Le Gohic. What a great place, with all the little touches provided making it not only a splendid base for exploring, but almost seeming more like a hotel and self catering. There is just about everything provided you need to get you going and what there isn't Robin and Sheila can arrange - loved the option of ordering fresh bread and croissants delivered to you door every morning. We also asked for a cake for one of our friend's birthday, which Robin order and kindly picked up. They couldn’t do enough for you.

Another aspect we also liked was the private garden and BBQ, which we took advantage of on more than one occasion.

Le Gohic is well situated and we found visiting local towns very easy, making day trips to Auray (lovely place to have moules by the river), Carnac (great beach) and Vannes (bigger town with a lively port area). We also made the trip to Mont Saint-Michel, which was about 2 hours by car and well worth the trip.

At the time my wife was 4 months pregnant and we'd definitely return for a family holiday.

We have taken a group of close to 30 people twice to Le Gohic, a former hamlet near Quistinic in the Morbihan region of Brittany. Run by gracious and friendly owners Sheila and Robin Berwick, who know the area and their neighbors intimately and can tell you just about anything you need or want to know about the area. This is a self-catering gite, though you can arrange for a wonderful cook if you prefer. The houses are beautifully restored and maintained, with all the little conveniences that make your stay more enjoyable. A wonderful crepe restaurant is in walking distance. Lots of interesting things to see nearby, great hikes, fabulous scenery. We can't wait to go back!
