“Excellent sea food”
Reviewed 20 November 2012

Excellent sea food restaurant. It has the freshest sea food in Brest. Service is good and they cook fish to its perfection. If you feel like crabs and shrimps platter do not hesitate as they are a killer.
Atmosphere is quite cold though. It's probably a good idea to keep your pull over.

“French mediocrity”
Reviewed 12 November 2012

We went to this restaurant in search for a taste of Brittany's vast marine resources. On arrival, the restaurant was empty and the staff had gathered up in a rather daunting way. It remained like this the rest of the evening, even when some more people arrived. Attentive service is always welcome, but here you feel almost observed while the quality of the service wasn't really good. Similar the food: Ok, but nothing great. The fish soup was almost tasteless and watery, the mussels were decent but the "curry" sauce had nothing to do with curry. Main dishes were convincing haddock and a substandard cod, beurre nantaise sauce was ok but nothing special. The menu finished with a chocolate mousse that could have come directly from the supermarket. On top of that the red wine was too cold. All in all it was an ok meal, but no comparison with some of the great seafood restaurants along the French coast. The food was throughout "flat" in taste, it almost seemed like the cook forgot the seasoning. So don't expect any highlights here, just French mediocrity..

“Great Food, Service with Attitude and Arrogance.”
Reviewed 20 July 2012

My family visited Brest 10/7/12 - 17/7/12 for the 'fete internationale de la mer' (it happens every 4 years - just like the Olympics) - so booking hotels and 'quality' restaurants in advance is essential. We booked 'La Maison de l'Ocean' 4 months in advance for a party of 6 - upper-floor, overlooking the harbour - a big 'ask' as only 4 tables are in this position - my sons wife is originally from Brest, so no problem with booking a table (in French) over the telephone.
Our party of 6 consisted of myself /wife; my son/wife/3 year old son; my sons Mother-in-Law (who lives in Brest) - after arriving at the restaurant, the 2 waiters serving our table were not happy with my grandson (3years old) who had small 'toys' on the table to keep him occupied, - the waiters were saying that it is not acceptable in such a 'high class' restaurant to have 'toys' on the table in front of other guests. This 'displeasure' from the waiters was happily addressed by my sons Mother-in-Law - who, spoke to each waiter in turn, in very 'Bretton' terms! - I have not a clue what was discussed (?) but the food that we ordered was excellent and the waiters were very helpful.
This is a sea-food restaurant of the highest quality but the waiting staff need to be less arrogant,
.

“When only the best....”
Reviewed 9 July 2012

Our hotel recommended La Maison de l'Ocean, and they were right. Being seafood lovers, we were looking for a real treat. And boy did we get one. We didn't have reservation, but still got seated with minimum fuss. The waitress could have been a little more friendly, the she was attentive to our needs (the bread kept on appearing as soon as the bread basket was empty or she topped the wine glasses when ever required.
We really splurged that night, ordering two different platters (one of them being the "Royale" which include 1/2 lobster, your choice of "breton = local" or canadian). That was a big mistake. No way the two of us could finish that. The food was just excellent. The cooked seafood (ie crabs of all sort including spider, crayfish and bigorneaux etc) was succulent, and the raw seafood (different types of shelfish, including 2 types of oysters) could not have been fresher as they were still alive.
The wine list was also impressive and reasonably priced.
Ate all the raw seafood and some of the cooked one and took the remainder home with us for lunch.
If you're to splurge once during your holiday, then this is the place to do it. (Not Mc Donald's price but it will be the highlight of your trip).

“Pretentious and average”
Reviewed 30 June 2012 via mobile

We went here on the basis of reviews and were disappointed. It was a low season Thursday night & we hadn't booked, but they made a big thing of 'allowing' us to eat without a reservation. The service was terrible; rude, slow & arrogant.
Food was ok, nothing special & there's such a wide choice of fish restaurants nearby that I wouldn't go here again in a hurry.
The bill came to €71, but they tried to charge us €107 for some reason??! We didn't leave a tip.
