“Modern and clean”
Reviewed 9 May 2013

at last a modern and clean hotel at Saint Malo; this Balmoral has been built recently and even if it is not located in the very center of Saint Malo, this is the place where to stay and profit from a very good comfort at a very affordable price. Good breakfast also. Nothing to regret with such a choice.

Room Tip: perhaps avoiding the last floor since the venting appears to be noisy in the bathroom

To get there: follow signs to railway station (gare). The hotel is on a roundabout (it's France ... there are beaucoup roundabouts).
My wife and I stayed 3 nights in late April.
We were lucky to get free parking beside the hotel. Parking under the hotel costs €10 per day.
Pleasant, helpful staff gave good advice on a restaurant nearby (about 5 mins walk). There are several restaurants nearby but we ate only in the one recommended and they gave a free aperitif when we mentioned the hotel.
Large, comfortable, modern room. Self-serve breakfast ... good choice and all you can eat. I don't think anything other than breakfast was served.
About 15 mins walk to town (we're not fast walkers). Wouldn't be happy to do the walk at night ... a bit too quiet. A taxi cost €10 to the centre of town.
Overall we were very pleased with hotel and would recommend it.

The only downside of this place is that it is about 15mins walk from the old town itself. It was cold the weekend we were there so this was not ideal but to be honest the fact that the hotel is so much more spacious and warm than all of the hotels within the walls makes up for it.

The rooms are great, bed are very comfortable and overall it is really a fantastic place to stay.

Only downside was i would have liked a reminder anout the time changing the weekend we were there. Not their fault but we forgot about it and missed our ferry!

I would (and will) stay here again.

We stayed at the Balmoral en-route to Spain travelling with a vehicle from Guernsey to Jersey to St Malo return. The hotel is only a 10 min drive from the port. We pre-booked on our outward journey as we wanted to ensure we had the secure underground parking offered. The hotel was spotless and modern as was our room which was on the 3rd floor. The 3rd bed in the room was excellent as compared to your Premier Inn, Holiday Inn etc. It was more than comfortable for our 15 year old daughter (who normally complains abour the comfort of the 3rd bed)! You can book breakfast in the small dining room and there is sufficient on offer such as croissants, jams, eggs & bacon etc. The staff are all well presented and very polite and helpful. The hotel does not cater for evening meals but there is a fantastic bistro 2 minutes walk away which we can highly recommend. Turn left out of the hotel, up to the top of the road and across the pedestrian crossing and it is directly in front of you. We were not expecting to have to stay over in St Malo on our return leg but made good time and arrived at the Balmoral at 9.45 pm and were parked and checked in by 10 pm.

As with many French cities, parking is nearly non-existent in the older sections, and this is certainly true of San Malo's Intra-Muros. The bw is a nearly new facility that provides a perfect balance between conveniences old and new. Reserve parking in advance and you're easily parked securely underground. Yet a 15-20 minute walk puts you in the heart of old San Malo. Plus the breakfast is better than most, and both parking and breakfast are a bit cheaper than other similar hotels.

A lovely quiet modern hotel with friendly and helpful front desk staff. We stayed here for one night for a quick weekend getaway on the ferry from Jersey and were not disappointed despite the awful wet weather. St Malo is pretty with beautiful beaches and loads of great places to get Crepes and sweets!
One word of warning. This hotel is NOT in the old walled city and so (as we were) if you get off to the ferry you will need a taxi as we got very lost and had to enlist the help of a local waiter to get a taxi and find the Balmoral. It is at least a 15-20 minute walk into St Malo from the hotel - a little further away than we realised!

Stayed for one night before driving on to our end destination. We stayed in a superior room and can say the following:
Plus points

Central to both the ferry port and train station
Big room and bed
Well decorated and nicely furnished
Great bathroom and big shower cubicle (big enough for two)
Friendly, multi-lingual staff
Adequate breakfast

Negatives:

No restaurant or bar food available
