A real nice, cosy and classy Hotel in a house with a hisotry. Lovely park,, also to park Your car and to relax in the sun or in the shade. Had a quiet room looking onto the park. Room with space to relax, nicely furnished. For French Hotels oversized bed Toilet and bathroom was reachable through stairs in the room. real a French idea. Perhaps not for People with a handicap or to drunk. Breakfast was Castle stile, nicely served, however a bit on the costly side, but, as the parking in the park was free it seems ok pricewise

Room Tip: Rooms with view on the park might be quieter

This 18th century "Malouinière" (traditional mansion home built by wealthy St.-Malo shippers and located just outside of the walled St.-Malo city) has been beautifully preserved. It has high ceilings, period chandeliers, lamps, and model boats throughout the mansion, and features a lovely small park behind the home, festooned with roses and providing a safe location to park one's car.

The owners correctly mentioned to me that the old 18th century walls are also thicker than those of modern hotels, a point worth noting for those who like uninterrupted sleep or have romantic nighttime intentions.

The owners kindly accommodated our 11 p.m. arrival after a long drive from Brussels, and were very friendly in describing daytime itineraries around St-Malo and Mont St-Michel. It is only a 3-minute walk from the hotel down to the nearest beach, which is lined with restaurants.

The only "negative" is that, as mentioned by another reviewer, Le Valmarin is more a large B&B than traditional hotel in the sense that there is no dinner or room service. That said, the ample breakfast features home-made jam and yoghurt, and fantastic restaurants are just a short walk away.

Quite simply one of the most romantic and unique hotels I have yet experienced. Not to be missed.

Room Tip: I would recommend either Room #17 (best in the hotel) or any other room facing the park behind the h...

We stayed the night at Le Valmarin on the 12th/13th May 2014 having booked on line. We came to St Malo from Chatellerault in Vienne so quite a long drive.
We found the hotel excellent and a beautiful place to stay.
The welcome was warm, and we were offered a choice of rooms, all of them equally gorgeous and comfortable. An enormous amount of thought has gone into the decoration and presentation of these rooms and all very much in keeping with the age and style of the beautiful building.
The only downside was that we had to leave to catch the ferry home but we would go there again like a shot!

This is a lovely building, set in attractive gardens. The rooms are large, with wonderfully high ceilings and ornate décor. One can but wonder what it must have been like to live in such a place, years ago.

The staff were pleasant and helpful.

One point, this place serves only breakfast and should therefore be considered a rather large and grand B&B - this is not really a hotel. Not a problem for us but people should view and book with that knowledge.

A delightful stay at a lovely 18th century home, I couldn’t have been more happy with Le Valmarin.

We arrived late off the last ferry from Jersey, and we were received with such warmth and friendliness, it makes me wonder who in the world are some of these unappreciative tripAdvisor commentators.

The beautiful old building is gorgeous, cared for with love, and chock full of special decorative and antique touches you would generally expect to find in a private home.

Having mentioned we would probably be returning to the attractive little sitting room before bedtime to take a look around, imagine our surprise in discovering our hostess had lit a fire just for us, which added even more to the charm of the room and to the evening!

We look forward to a return trip to Saint Malo in the near future, and wouldn’t dream of staying anywhere else.

Room Tip: back room best, facing the garden ... they are quieter and generally bigger

I find some of the previous comments baffling, it is as if they are talking about some other hotel. I found The Valmarin all you could ever hope for and more if you are looking for something of refinement and special comfort. It is absolutely a feast for the eye, with charming, exceptional touches everywhere you look. Rarely have I encountered such finesse in a hotel of any category.

As for the welcome and the service, some of the previous commentators must be talking about someone else, because our experience was exemplary. We felt as though we were being welcomed into a beautiful private home, decorated with taste and imagination. The love and passion that the owners have poured into this property is unmistakable.

And the breakfast: my goodness, where else would you ever have two homemade jams and freshly baked cake and warm crepes served with all the traditional french breakfast fare ... not to mention freshly squeezed orange juice!

To sum up, we found the Valmarin a wonderful discovery with absolutely no downside. A great value for money for someone looking for a hotel of quality
