“A Little Gem”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

This is a real little St Malo gem. A small, friendly hotel which is very comfortable, well cared for and the staff could not have been more helpful. Room was good size and tastefully decorated. There was a lift.

Although you can park in the small yard for a fee there is plenty of on street parking for free in the quiet roads. It's about 30-40 minutes walk to the old town or about 5 minutes in the car. However there are an adequate number of local eating houses, the local creperie being particularly recommended.

The garden for an evening drink is very pleasant. Really this is an excellent little hotel which I have no hesitation in recommending and which I will certainly stay at again when in the area.

After our first fantastic visit two years ago, we decided to return to Saint Malo to experience 'la Villefromoy' again. As per our previous visit, our room was located in the annexe as opposed to the main original building.
It is evident the all rooms in the hotel have undergone major refurbishments since our last visit; they now feature new wallpapers, curtains, bedding, and chairs. Overall this refurbishment has greatly enhanced our overall experience of the hotel. The rooms are well equipped with tea facilities, mini bar, satellite TV, and bathroom.

THE GOOD
1. The rooms are well equipped, modern and attractively furnished.
2. The lounge is a great place to sit and relax with a drink (however I felt this room appeared vastly underused)
3. All the staff were very welcoming
4. Lots of British TV channels available on good HD televisions
5. Good choice at breakfast (highlight was the mini crepe on the final day)
6. Hotel is close to the sea
7. Our triple room was extremely spacious (see pictures).

THE NOT SO GOOD...
1. Despite its size, our room backed on to a busy, noisy road that passed behind the hotel. This was a problem because the window needed to be open at night due to the heat.
2. Parking in the car park is expensive at 15 euros per night, even though parking on the road isn't a problem- its a very safe area.
3.Our mini fridge didn't work and wasn't fixed even after we reported it. However, the staff were extremely apologetic about this situation.
4.Some of the carpets in the annexe's corridors were worn and could do with replacement (particularly on the stairs).
5.The hotel is 3km from Intra Muros- however we are keen walkers so this wasn't a problem at all(!)

CONCLUSION
I'm still giving la Villefromoy an 'Excellent' grading because most of the 'not so good' points I've made can be counteracted by a viable alternative, therefore making this, in my opinion, one of the friendliest, most comfortable hotels in Saint Malo.

Room Tip: If possible, request a room in the original wing of the hotel; you will have a partial sea view and...

Not a great start when told on arrival by the receptionist that our room was small and noisy, but that's because we had a cheap room booking with Brittany Ferries! She could of course remedy this by offering us the garden room for and extra 50€ a night ( special rate for us 30€ pn) . Our room was indeed small & noisy but we stuck with it. Hotels was clean and decor was tasteful. Rest of the staff were helpful & very friendly IF you could find them. Getting a drink at the bar or a coffee could be a long wait. Breakfast staff lovely but again illusive. Not planning a return trip!

We had a lovely two nights stay at this hotel. Jean-Paul greeted us warmly at the parking gate, showed us around the charming hotel and gave excellent restaurant recommendations, including the Bergamote for crepes in Saint-Malo, which is not to be missed! Nothing we asked was too much trouble for the staff, they were all very friendly and professional. It was a pleasure to walk to the walled city of Saint Malo along the promenade next to the rapidly rising and falling tides. Our seaview room was wonderful; we were able to leave the window open and listen to the waves all night...We would love to return to this relaxing place...

Room Tip: Splurge for a seaview room!

We stayed two nights at this hotel, and I cannot say enough about the hotel and the
staff. From the moment we arrived until the time they assisted us with our transfer
to the train station the front desk was always there..Every request was met with
enthusiasm and concern....restaurant bookings, a sidetrip to Mt St Michel ,any
request from anyone in our group...this charming hotel with such a gracious staff
will always be one of my all time favorite places. Jean Paul who met us on arrival
and constantly addressed our needs is a true professional...the breakfast staff
provided us with wonderful service, and the girl at the desk one morning offered
to transport us to the walled city of St. Malo...charming hotel overlooking the
beach in a peaceful area .I had a room with a marvelous view of the beach.
one block away ...This hotel with its fantastic staff really understands how to
take care of guests..

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the beach

We had booked a suite at Hoel Villefremoy ; did expect a balcony too, and whilst you could see the sea, the hotel was one block back. We were in room 7 which was probably best as far as sea view is concerned. It was clean, well equipped, but maybe a tad formal. By continental standards the breakfast was good with selection of fish (nice fresh salmon), hard boiled egg and cold meat.

Room Tip: Room 7 has the best sea view but no balcony

We stayed in this hotel for one night whilst driving back up the West Coast of France after visiting friends in Armagnac.
This hotel was a lucky find, it is a superb hotel, in a great location.
You can walk to the old town in half an hour, along the promenade.
Great rooms, Good service, Highly recommended.
Limited parking, but you can park in the street outside without too much problem.
