Spent 2 nights here on a weekend break to St Malo. Having stayed at several hotels in St Malo over the years, some being 4 star, this hotel more than matches them in quality. The only thing that could be done to improve things is to maybe include tea / coffee facilities in the room or to have them available. Very helpful and friendly staff and room clean and comfortable. Will definitely come back.

This hotel is in a great location inside the lively, old walled town and with lots of bars and restaurants around the hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful. Nice room. Very small lift. Wifi reception in room reasonable. No parking at hotel but public pay car park just a few minutes walk away.

This hotel with adjoining restaurant is based in a scenic spot within the Old Town walls, and on some days a small art market sets up across the road.

We took a seat on the terrace to people watch and have breakfast. Our waiter was friendly and service was quick, the coffee was strong and the pastries were fresh and the meal was good value at around €6.50 each including a hot drink, orange juice and croissant with a selection of preserves.

We did not stay in the hotel so can only vouch for the restaurant which we found to be good value and quality.

stayed here for a 5 night break in august booked through brittany ferries and were truly delighted. We arrived at 8.30 am feeling a bit tired so took a taxi to the hotel instead of the shuttle bus for 7 euros well worth it. it stated on our booking that we would not be able to check in until 3 pm so we thought we would leave our cases and go for a walkabout but the wonderful receptionist (thanks again it was really appreciated) on duty told us the room was ready and would we like to check in needless to say we did. The hotel is in the best location possible right on the square with everything going on around you. It was really nice to come back to the hotel after being out all day have one of their marvellous cocktails and just people watch, they have a fantastic bar there and the waiters work very hard. The rooms and bathroom were of a decent size and spotlessly clean, we were a bit concerned about some previous reviews stating that it was noisy but we had no problem, breakfast was good everything that we wanted and plenty of it. The staff were all very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. St Malo is a lovely place to visit, beaches are fantastic, take a walk along the wall views are lovely, the cathedral is worth a visit as well as the old castle museum, as for eating you are spoilt for choice and all close to the hotel, there is a carrefour express about a 2 min walk from the hotel where you can get a good bottle of wine for a good price. Excellent value for money good on Brittany Ferries for including this hotel in their brochure will definitely stay here again.

This was the second visit to this very nice hotel, the previous visit was Spring 2012. There are deals available with Brittany Ferries which mean if you use the L'Univers as a base or for a short break you can reap a substantial discount as opposed to booking the ferry and the hotel separately. The hotel has a lift and to describe it as being similar to a 3 person coffin is not an understatement but it would not take a wheelchair, I have mobility issues and I can get around without having to use a wheelchair, so I am able to use the lift. The hotel having been made aware of the fact that I am disabled gave me the option of a ground floor room, but having knowledge of the hotel requested a higher floor and again the hotel gave us a room near to the lift access.
The continental breakfast had a selection of cold cooked ham which was first rate together with hard boiled eggs, and uncooked eggs that could be boiled to individual requirements. There was the usual selection of rolls, croissants and pain o chocolat. Fresh fruit salad yoghurt etc. The selection for breakfast was very good.
The bar staff worked very hard and efficiently although sometimes a little haste might be beneficial but experience comes with age.
MY GRIPE WITH ST. MALO is appalling parking for disabled vehicle users particularly drivers. August is extremely busy and at the time of my visit there were stalls occupying what parking spaces there were opposite L'Universe (No DISABLED BAYS). The 1disabled space within the city walls which was 100 yards from the hotel for the 3 days of our visit was occupied by a French vehicle that albeit was displaying a Disabled badge was not moved throughout the 3 days.
The other space that was at the rear of a nearby hotel was for me a long walk and potluck as to whether or not it was free of vehicles.
There were other Disabled bays outside the city walls and again availability was an issue and queuing was at this busy period and the walk to the hotel was painful and impractical.
St. Malo needs to become more disabled vehicle user friendly particularly at busy times, able bodied vehicle users are able to park further away in favour of the physically less abled.

I would recommend the Hotel L'Univers as it is clean and well cared for and the staff are very helpful.

My friend and I stayed overnight in this aged but accommodating hotel. The receptionist was cheerful and helpful, and made our stay most enjoyable. Our room overlooked the wall and the bustle of the restaurants and market stalls below and added to the ambience of the stay in the centre of town. The room was clean and space was generous - the bathroom surprisingly large. The luggage was stored for the following day while we wandered through the streets before leaving. Wi-Fi free in common areas. Great choice. Fellow guests with small children a little too excited!

Room Tip: Ask for a front room to be involved in the bustle below.
