“Luxury in Burgundy”
Reviewed 15 July 2011

Quick summary: lovely luxury stay; good location for in-Beaune location and touring Burgundy.

This hotel is a complex of old mansions and courtyards, tastefully decorated in the mode of the historic luxury of the area. We stayed three nights in room #116, Montrachet. The room is very spacious with a canopied king-size bed, sitting area with coffee table, spacious writing desk, lots of drawers and good closet space, in-room safe, etc. Polished hardood floors. It overlooked the back courtyard garden, and was a quiet room.

I love the fact that the beds have high quality sheets and blankets. I find the duvets that more and more hotels use are much too warm. It's easier to adjust the comfort level with traditional sheets and blankets.

The large bathroom has two sinks; separate tub and shower; separate toilet area. Lovely towels, robes, and slippers. Also: washcloths! (not as common in European hotels as in the USA.) Lotsof room for your own stuff on the vanity and little cabinets. The toiletries have a lovely herbal smell, and consist of soap/shower gel mounted to the wall (a trend in a lot of hotels in all prices), bath salts, massage oil, as well as other nice amentities like shoe polishers. My only issue with the wall-mount soap is that it was on one side of the 2-sink area, i.e. some walking around if the two of you were using the sinks at the same time.

Free wifi throughout, but it seems to work better in the lounge than it did in our room.

Excellent housekeeping. The staff are very helpful, friendly, and professional.

The location is right in town and an easy walking distance to restaurants, the Hospice, etc. The park in town seems to sponsor music events at midday, which was also enjoyable.

BReakfast is continental-plus 19 euros, and pretty good. It includes the expected fruits and juices, nice pastries and breads, some meats and cheese, etc. For another 3 euros you can get a cooked-to-order omlette or other eggs, which was also pretty good.

The public areas are quite nice -- lounges, a small cocktail lounge, breakfast rooms, and a garden patio where breakfast is also served in nice weather.

I give them high points that they know how to serve a proper cup of tea. When served, the boiling water has already been poured over the loose tea in the pot. Many places make the pretenious mistake of bringing a pot of hot water to you with a bag on the side. A good tea immediately needs boiling water! (But the bar is also nicely stocked.)

Parking is in a secure adjoining enclosed lot. I forget the surcharge, but it is nominal and the lot very convenient.

I strongly recommend that you join the Small Luxury Hotel loyalty program. It has no fee, and benefits often include nice perks. I cannot claim that the amenity is offered everywhere based on availability, but we've had some nice upgrades (which I'm sure this room was) and the continental breakfast included. My experience here and at other SLH's makes me want to seek them out wherever I go. These hotels are not cheap, but they are always quite nice and the perks offer very good value.

Check out the Moroccan restaurant up the street -- very good, and a nice change. The menu was undergoing change, but out couscous dishes were very tasty.

Room Tip: A real feeling of luxury in Burgundy

I have stayed at several 4 and 5 star hotels in my years of travelling, and the Hotel le Cep is as good as any. My wife and I stayed here for five nights, and we were delightd. All hotel staff were welcoming and thoughtful. I believe the staff here is as dedicated and as well trained as any hotel staff any place. We were impressed. Our large double was indeed large with a comfortable bed, table and chairs, sofa, chest, armoire, and dressing table. The bathroom was perhaps a little small, but it was luxuriously fittend and had both a tub and shower (and a bidet). The breakfast buffet was excellent and served in a very pleasant courtyard. There was also a indoor dining area in case of poor weather. The bar was well stocked with the wines and beers of Burgundy, including a crémant, which became one of our favorites. The hotel has its own parking lot, but guests do have to pay. On the other hand, parking is difficult in Beaune.

Room Tip: I expect all the rooms would be nice here.

we stayed 3 nights recently. Le Cep is located in heart of Beaune, a lovely walking town with shopping, wineries, history, restaurants. The hotel has been created from adjoining 14th and 16th century adjoining houses, makes a unique place to stay - all rooms are well appointed and spacious. Bathrooms are modern, quite large with extras such as towel warming rack, robes and slippers. Lovely courtyardsand gardens between the buildings provide a pleasant setting for drinks or just sitting. Gracious and hospitable staffavailable to help with questions, directions, etc.

We arrived in Beaune only to find out our reservation at another place was double booked. The wonderful front desk staff at Le Cep were gracious enough to find us a room for two nites in their hotel. This is a first class hotel. Our room was large with well appointed bathroom. All personnel on-site was knowledgeable and friendly. We bought a bottle of wine, some cheese and a baguette and sat in the courtyard outside our room for a romantic evening. Even the General Manager complimented us for enjoying his hotel.

We spent four delightful nights at Le Cep in May 2011. It was a wonderful experience. Our room was most pleasant and comfortable. The hotel staff were very professional, friendly, and went out of their way to be helpful. The property is ideally situated and very well kept up. We will not hesitate to stay there on our next visit to Beaune. Our son also stayed at Le Cep a few weeks earlier and he was similarly pleased with his experience at Le Cep.
