This former monks residence provided clean, modern bathroom and charming bedroom with comfortable bed. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Great location and good value. Will recommend and hopefully be back. TC, MI. USA

What a hotel! Once you realize the door is not just a decorative window facing the street, you enter history. The lobby and dinner area is situated in the remnants of an old wine cellar.

The staff is ridiculously friendly (they almost chased us down the street to make sure we took an umbrella).

The only knock is that there are a lot of stairs, not only to the room, but in the room as well. But, that's what you should expect when staying in a hotel retrofitted into a building that is several hundred years old.

The room had an old charm with all the modern amenities (WiFi, comfy bed, LCD TV ...). Not sure about A/C or not, we stayed in October and just let the natural breeze come through the window, but I would assume there wouldn't be A/C.

This 12 room hotel used to be an abbey. The lobby definitely looks old world with a vaulted stone ceiling, very dramatic looking. There is a restaurant here but we did not have a chance to have dinner here. We had breakfast on the 2 mornings we were there. It was simple fare - your choice of cereal, breads and jams, cheese, ham and eggs, coffee or tea. The breads were delicious.

We occupied 2 rooms. One room was on the first floor ( or second floor to Americans). It had a king size bed, big old armoire and a big bathroom with shower. The second bedroom was interesting. You climbed up to the second floor (third floor to Americans) and within the room was another flight of stairs to the bedroom. The bathroom was downstairs. It was inconvenient to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The stairs within the room were steep, almost vertical. However, this room did have a view of the roof top of the Basilica of Noter Dame. These rooms were very charming and the beds were very comfortable. The sheets and towels were of high quality.

Bruno, the owner, is charming. On our first night, he gave us a bottle of wine to enjoy before going out to dinner. The staff are all kind. The day we checked in, the girl who took care of us, carried our luggage up the winding stairs. She was strong!

Anyone who has difficulty climbing stairs should not stay here. There is no elevator in the building. But if you are willing to climb stairs, staying here is an interesting experience. It is in the middle of the old town of Beaune, one can easily walk to Hotel de Dieu and the Basilica. There are opportunities for wine tasting within the town.

Built inside the shell of an old abbey, with a really charming entry and main dining/lounging area. The big strength is the proprietor, Bruno, and his staff, who were much warmer and more proactive and helpful than the norm for France. Bruno personally sat with us over a complimentary bottle of wine to tell us about Beaune and the wine trade.

Though there may be some inconveniences (steep spiral steps, cramped rooms that are smaller than they appear in photos), the Abbaye is very well-located, just a few minutes' walk from the main plazas and sites. The Hotel de Dieu/Hospices de Beaune is 5 minutes away, through picture-perfect cobblestoned lanes. The rooms are comfortable and solid 3-star quality (keeping in mind that it is a one-of-a-kind establishment and not a Best Western).

Highly recommend to adventurous travellers who appreciate personalized hospitality.

Staying in an ancient abbey was a great experience! You have to be able to manage many many curved stairs; over 70 up to my third floor room, and then within the room a flight up to my bed! Thankfully the most wonderful staff managed my bag. I would love to know how they carved a hotel out of this ancient structure and what the rooms were originally. Even the front door is quaint. Breakfast available for a fee in the old wine cellar and there is an evening restaurant as well. Room well appointed and modern with everything you might need. Excellent Beaune location and the staff found us free parking, walking distance to wine shops, the incredible Saturday market, the Hotel Dieu, many many cafes and restaurants, and all of Beaune's sights. Would definitely return, but maybe stay on the second floor!

Room Tip: If you are able to do the stairs, the third floor rooms overlooking the town are great.

Living history. If you can manage 73 stairs to your room, this is the most wonderful hotel. It is an incredible feeling to stay in a building from the 12th century that retains its history and has been renovated for modern travel.
Try to schedule your visit to include a Saturday stay. The village market is not to be missed.
On morning of departure, there was no cab available for our group of 5 - so the chef took us to the train station. Incredible caring service.
