We stayed here one night as an alternative stopover point en route to Italy and we were extremely pleased with the choice. The hotel itself occupies a corner plot on two streets and successfully marries together several buildings and a stable block into a really classy, Tardis like facility, despite the relatively ordinary facade.

Finding the car park entrance was fun, not least as both streets on to which the hotel faces are one way and very small. Despite the signs on the surrounding roads pointing in the right direction, it really is blink and you'll miss it. After having gone round the block once, our rule of thumb was that the entrance to the car park is just before the sign for the Best Western hotel affixed to the back of that building on the opposite side of the road. The directions will make sense when you get there! Once inside, a large courtyard opened up with an abundance of space for cars. A stroll through a lovely shaded courtyard past an old stable block and smart tables and chairs for drinks, led to reception. The owner appears to live on site above the stables and appeared immediately. The superior room we had faced inwards over the courtyard and was quirky, classy, quiet and cool. Whilst there was a lift, the staircase was effectively a glass encased space between what had been the external walls of the buildings. On the first floor there was even a snooker table which looked like a Gentleman's club. Odd, but it felt in keeping.

Bourg itself is a pleasant enough town with a few sights to detain you for the afternoon. Plenty of restaurants and pavement bars dotted the place although the previous correspondent was right. If you go on a Monday, the bars close at 7pm by and large, as do most, but not all, of the restaurants. Other than that, we'll be adding this one to our list. I suggest others do as well.

Room Tip: Superior rooms seem to face inwards. The others face a road and a small locals' bar, but neithe...

We stayed 3 nights in this fabulous little hotel in Bourg en Bresse. It was chosen by our French friends as we were staying near their family. They couldn't have chosen a better place. The hotel is conveniently located in the middle of this charming small town near Lyon. The owners live on premises and that insures that everything runs smoothly. There are only 17 rooms and they vary in size and furnishings. The entire property is immaculate and the staff is very helpful. Parking right outside the front door. Great lounge, TV room, Hot tub, Spa. Breakfast outside or inside. Handicapped accessible. I can't say enough good things about this place or about Francoise and Aurelia the owners. The town is quite nice and has a beautiful church and Monastery. Plenty of good restaurants in walking distance. We visited during a hot July, the air conditioning was a true blessing. I understand that the location is also close to skiing in the winter. The price was less than I expected and was well worth the money.

Room Tip: We had a small room (#12) on the top floor. Bigger rooms with sitting areas are also available.

We stayed here in June 2013, it was a stop off after driving through Italy en route back to the uk. The service here was outstanding and very friendly, all my anxieties about my appalling french were allayed upon check in. There is a wonderful little spa and a comfortable communal area with a pool table which was great fun. The rooms were comfortable and quiet. The buffet breakfast was very good quality too. All in all highly recommended!

Very nice hotel in very old building. Beautifully restored, but also with a rustic, romantic feel. Room for "disabled" people very spacious with excellent bathroom. Good location 100 meters from the "old town". There was some issue with locking the gate at 11pm which seemed like a curfew! This may only be for wheelies as the side gate is the accessible entrance. Also no kettle available in room for tea-making (my partner is English so tea is quite important). All-in-all a very pleasant hotel, and for us a good price (we booked quite early). The town has some nice old buildings although it is a bit of a mish-mash, with random new ones interspersed, unlike Beaune for example, which is in my opinion more cohesive as an old-town experience. The monastery "Monastère royal de Brou" is about a 20 minute walk and well worth a look.

Good morning,
thank you very much for your comment, i'm glad your family and you get a nice moment with us and for us, it's the most important. The room for disabled people is very confortable and we have pleasure to book it to everybody, it's spacious, well deccorated and we didn't want it too medicalized.
I apologize for the locked gate, but i'm sure there was a misunderstanding. Indeed we close the parking place at 11 pm (for security reasons) and then the "pedestrian" entrance is available. But with another code or a remote, the main gate (for wheelies, as you told) is also available 24/24.
And for the kettle, it's was a long relexion for us. Our politic is to offer the essential : parking, the internet and the leisure : jacuzzi, sauna, pool table. And we are afraid with a lot of things : accidents on children, on carpets and the risk of "free" breakfast in the room (as we have good bakeries next to the hotel). I hope you agree with these arguments and i'm sure it's was not a real disappointment for you.
We hope see you another time in Bourg en Bresse.
Best regards.

This small hotel very close to the centre of the city is located in a building, which served as a guest house already in 1701! Our superior room (room 18, designed for handicapped) was huge and tastefully decorated. Breakfast at 13 euros was not cheap but very good. We had the breakfast at the lovely patio. Surprisingly, the hotel has a small spa with a sauna and a jacuzzi. The sauna was good, although the stove did not have enough stones (being Finnish I know what I am talking about!). One has to ask the reception to heat the sauna but oddly enough the spa cannot be reserved. This may create confusing situations, if you are in the sauna and someone knocks on the door. It would be much simpler just to let guests reserve the spa. The hotel also has a pool table and bar service.

Bonjour Madame, Monsieur,
we are happy you spent a good time in our hotel. You had chance to have breakfast outside, because the summer was long to come, but since a couple of day it's a real pleasure to be outside.
Concerning the reservation of the spa, it's a hard question. Firstly it couldn't be free anymore and then it would create also confusing situations : if someone arrives late and tells the next guest "i have paid, i stay" ... or worth. During one year we added a question on our satisfaction questionnaire about that : free but risk (limited because only 17 rooms) to not have availability immediatly / reserved but with an extra cost. Answer was clear : 80 % for a free area. It was a long reflexion and we prefer to let it free (occupation and price).
We hope see you again.
Regards
François André

We booked the hotel online following various positive reviews on TA and were really pleased when we managed to find the hotel which is tucked away off a main street in the centre of Bourg en Bresse - usual 'mad' French signposting to blame I think.

This renovated old building has been turned into a welcoming, charming and extremely comfortable hotel. The receptionist was very friendly and showed us around before explaining where the best restaurants were situated. Our small room (our choice) had one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in and the smallish bathroom with excellent shower was ideal for an overnight stay.

There is a billiard room and sauna/hot tub which would be nice in the winter and a lovely lounge area where you can relax with a local beer or one of their whisky selections or just a glass of wine or a coffee.

Breakfast is good although the usual French high price, but acceptable because of the quality of the products on offer.

The owner(s) are much in evidence and he apologised in the morning for any disturbance we had suffered due to an argument out in the street during the night. We heard this but it only lasted for a couple of minutes so wasn't a problem at all.

Would happily recommend this hotel.
