“Didn't disappoint”
Reviewed 3 May 2012

I had high expectations for this hotel given that it had a 3 Michelin star restaurant and I wasn't disappointed. The hotel is charming. The decoration is a bit eclectic with a mix of traditional (the drawing rooms) and modern (the bar area). The spa is functional, but on the small side. The sauna and swimming pools felt a bit cramped.

We had a superior room was was large and comfortable, particularly the bathroom. It was at the back of the hotel overlooking the garden so it was very peaceful and quiet. Reading some other comments, it looks like it's worth requesting a room towards the back to avoid any street noise.

The service was excellent from the moment we arrived to the time we departed. The staff was professional and very friendly. Our meal was excellent. We were served an aperitif and amuse-bouche in the bar area followed by dinner in the restaurant. I would recommend ordering the menu vs. a la carte which tends to be more expensive. The menu also gives you the option to taste various dishes.

The hotel and restaurant are by no means cheap, but keeping in mind that it is meant to be a luxury "country inn" I think that overall the place delivers.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back overlooking the garden.

This was a classic example of what might have been a good hote, but is now resting on its laurels and trading on the reputation of its now sadly deceased chef patron. The hotel was very over commercialised, and the staff excelled in upselling guests anything they could whether it was on the menu or off it, often with no indication of what you were having to pay.
We have eaten at many 3 star restaurants and have without question had a wonderful and inspiring experience. This was not the case here. Although the service in the restaurant was good, the food was no better than mediocre, and certainly not remarkable. We ate a la carte, and it was not a success. I tried the legendary frogs legs which were ok but nothing special. My other half had what can only be described as a trio of miniature vegetables (pumpkin, artichoke and turnip on a sliver of nearly raw parsnip) as recommended by the waiter which although pretty to look at was a staggering €68. What astonished us was that other people didn't seem to think they were being taken for a ride, and the restaurant looked pretty full.
Rooms were ok but noisy if you face the road (which you do on two sides), but the bathroom had the smallest towels I have ever seen, and only two of them. Breakfast is very expensive and very bad. Poor vienoisserie and average coffee. Better to walk in to town and take a fresh coffee and croissant at a cafe. On its present form avoid this place, as a downgrading must be in the offing. We will not be going back.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

We stayed for one night on our way down to the South of France. We went out of our way to go for the food, however this was disappointing. We have eaten at many three Michellin starred restaurants and this did not live up to expectation. We had the tasting menu and it really did not have the wow factor, nor did it feel that a lot of effort had gone into the dishes. The hotel itself is lovely but the service was lacking considering this is an expensive hotel.

This Little country inn is unique. Everything was perfect, the attention to detail goes well beyond any hotel including the supposed best in the world. I am very difficult to please but this experience was faultless, every mouthful of food was exquisite, every thing in the room was tasteful and thought through. I can't wait to go back

Let's first mention that we heard of Relais Bernard Loiseau many times and always positively, hence high expectations.
Well, how put it...It was just a fantastic week end. To satrt with, rooms (ours was on a terrace on the garden) are nice, spacious and cosy. I am not 100% convinced with the seventies look of the big and nice bathroom but my wife was.
Common rooms (living rooms, library etc) are nicely furnished and welcoming fires are burning in the two chemneys (we wondered how they kept them burn as I 'm always busy keeping ours alive...).
But then came the first dinner....Just an amazing experience: a fairy tale from the beginning till the end. Mises en bouche that are delicate and finely tasty, a fish on schalots bed that is just wonderfull followed by lamb with an onion- how to put it? - we just never ever ate such a wonderfull onion- the cheese was very good -though may be not the utter best we ever had- and then the deserts were just the icing on the cake: FORMIDABLES: I had BL's favourite chokolate ice & biscuit on orange sauce...just mervelous and my wife a fscinating artistic cube that was hiding a pinapple "emulsion"...
Next day and next dinner we had BL's mervelous "ris de veau et purée à la truffe " and my wife had an extarordinary desert: a pear that actualy was made out of fine sugar icing perfumed with a subtil japanese spice I unfortunately forgot the name of- with mervelous pear pieces + emulsion on a divine biscuit...
To make a long story short, Relais BL is certainly not the cheapest way of spending a week-end, but it definitely is woth every penny spent: just an unforgetable trip in French "savoir-vivre"....I must add that Dominique Loiseau spends much time with every guest and is a delicious hostess...I forgot about the wonderfull breakfast in the historic room that had welcome under many others, Churchill, Poincaré, Rita Hayworth, Mitterand, Chirac and so many others...Now one understands why...But don't feel intimidated by the roaring ferraris that stop in front of the Relais: Dominique Loiseau certainly knows haow to make everybody feel at home...and this, definitely is an achievement! As we say in french..."Chapeau, Madame Loiseau", it is a great success!
