“Unexpected surprise in a little town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2013

Situated in an absolutely lovely town of Vezelay which is filled with stores, restaurants, wine stores, etc. we were not expecting such a beautiful and massive church in the middle of this tiny town and were not aware that there was a crypt that goes downstairs and I believe its St Madeline's tomb. All in all, a very spiritual place which brings goodness to your heart. If you are in this area, do not miss this quaint little town and church.

“Nice Surprise”

If you are in the area this Basilique is definitely worth a visit. Hard to believe a church of this size and ornateness is in a small town like Vezelay

“beautiful interior architecture, but is that the point?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

At the time of our visit work was being done on the exterior so from the outside it perhaps lost some of it's impact but the style of the interior was impressive.
The patterns of light and shade emphasised the graceful interior architecture so I can understand why some found the visit moving.
Having said that, and I know this moves the debate into a different area, much as we looked there wasn't a Bible in sight so doesn't that kind of miss the point?

“Special place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2013

This is a very special place. Park at the bottom of the town and walk up the enchanting slope to the basilique. There are small, artsy boutiques and some food/coffee along the way. When inside, be sure to go downstairs and see the relic room. The gilded container of St. Magdalene's bones is phenomenal. It's a lovely town, area, and cathedral.
