It's a bit of a hike to get to it if the flower show is not on, but just to see the grounds and the exterior of this chateau is worth it. What was particularly fun about the interior is that besides the restored splendor, you can also tour many un-renovated rooms , so you really get a good idea of what kind of disrepair can occur in a few hundred years and what it takes to bring a chateau back to life. I particularly liked the room with the odd bits or armor found among the discards.

If you're a fan of Catherine Medici, you'll love this castle. This was her original home before she swindled to get Chenonceaux for herself.

It's a really nice tour inside, and a great garden area out front as well that's worth a stroll.
Benjamin Franklin did time here when he was ambassador to France, look for his coin inside in the case.

This is actually three separate visits all in one, but you have to decide what ticket you want on arrival as there are different choices.

The chateau itself: to be honest, a fairly standard affair, pretty with some nicely decorated rooms but not particularly awe-inspiring, it took probably about a half hour tops at 5 year old pace.

The gardens and grounds: far more interesting, especially for kids, huge contemporary art displays are integrated into the trees and landscape, Dali-esque tree statues amaze and confound - 3 hours were spent wandering and exploring these until rain stopped play. If I had realised that the interesting part was outside I would have waited for a sunnier day and got a lot longer out of the visit.

The chateau also hosts the Festival des Jardins from April to October but you have to purchase an enhanced ticket, which we didn't do because of the rain forecast, it looked very interesting but possibly for slightly older children who can adhere better to the look but don't touch principle.

Lovely little cafe with gorgeous lemon cupcakes and plenty of icecream.

Our favorite castle during our trip as it felt like all the castles we've pictures since kids from the fairy tales. Loved that it was high in a hill overlooking the river and that it isn't overcrowded with tourists, so you can feel the place more to yourself.
