A very nice place 15 minutes on foot from the centre of Amboise and 5 minutes on foot from the train station. We did not book in advance but still got a rather big room with a double bed and beautiful blue paper on the wall. There was no TV but I don't think you need it in the Valley of Loire:) The garden is all green and shady and is also used as a parking for 3 cars since there are only 3 rooms there. If the weather allows, breakfast is served just outside your room in the garden. Otherwise, it's in a little kitchen. You get self-baked bread and marmelade with coffee and fruit juice. The lady of the house is friendly and provided us with loads of information and tips. It would've taken us another months to visit all places she recommended. There is not much to do in the B&B but if you need a typical quiet chambre d'hotes for a moderate price in Amboise, this is the right place.

We, too, love the beautiful garden, the tinkling fountain ourside the windows and the gated yard, and we also love the quiet nights that came from sleeping 4 mintes away from the noisey center of Amboise. Contrary to your other two reviewers, we are very fond of M. et Mme Roullet, having stayed there four or five times so far, and having always had a delightful time as their American guests. When in France, I work hard to practice my French and Madame always coaches me gently and kindly in improved grammar and vocabulary.

Yes, they do ask newcomers to pay in advance and in cash, but our family can easily accomodate a request like that. The breakfast is a delight--home-baked breads and confitures, and often extra treats, served either in the garden or in a charming breakfast room. For us the beds were very comfortable, and I loved that the toilet was separate from the sink and shower. We wouldn't think of staying anywhere else whenever we are in the Loire Valley.

We think Le Petit Clos deserves a much better review than the other two guests have given it.

We (my parents and husband) just returned from the Loire Valley and stayed in a small town called Amboise as recommended by Rick Steves France Guide Book. It was a great home base for touring all the castles nearby via bike or car and would recommend the town as a great base town.

We took the train from Paris in the morning and it was only a 2 hour train ride. We brought our bikes right on to the train and it was great!

Le Petit Clos is a bed and breakfast ('chambre d'hôte' in French) very close to the train station in Amboise (less than 500 yards). It has a gate around the property and a wonderful garden with a small fountain in the center and chairs and tables outside for eating breakfast and relaxing. We arrived at 10 am or so and just wanted to drop our bags off and tour the town before we headed off on our bikes.

Madame Roullet briefly said hello and went back to cleaning - telling us to wait a few minutes and she would have the rooms done. I really did not mind waiting and nor did I expect the rooms so quickly - and started to peek at what kind of plants that were growing in her garden. I must have wondered too far near an enterance that was not marked when she hastly came outside and strictly informed me it was private even though she had guest rooms back behind the fence. I felt horrible having done something wrong.

Madame Roullet does not have a website or email and made it clear she does not accept credit cards and gave a rolling of the eyes and a chuckle when questioned. She expects to be paid up front in full with the correct amount.

Madame Roullet also has a routine and if you break it, you will be punished with a scorn. Everyone must be up by 8:30 am at the lastest to get breakfast. If you are not awake by 8:20 am she will hastly knock on your door and give you a horrible look. You must be out of your room by 9:30 am. You can tell she wants this to be a part time job and only wants to work in the morning and get the most out of your money.

The beds were quite small double beds with huge overly stuffed square pillows. Don't ask for a smaller pillow or you will be told to go to a hotel for service. We tried to thank the Madame for givng us a less stuffed pillow and would not let us finish without saying 'go stay at a hotel if you want more service.' The beds made it ever so hard to get a good nights sleep and with early wake up call to get going - I am not sure how I ever manged to bike to all the castles (200 miles in three days and even more so tired with little sleep from the small bed and huge pillows and cramped muscles).

There is no place to securely store your bikes if you bring them. We just had to lock them to a bush and hope that no ran off with them. Yet everyone we met at the B&B brought their bikes as well and questioned a secure place to lock them. Don't ask or you will be given a chuckle and a response to stay at a hotel if you want service.

Madame Roullet is not afraid to speak her mind in French (her English is limited) - if you speak French beware ... she will correct you about if you want to speak perfect French you must live in the Loire Valley. (Sorry just trying to be friendly by speaking French instead of English ...)
