We booked a table at Chateau de Pray before we arrived in Amboise as we didn't want to miss out on a meal here. It was a 5 minute taxi drive from our hotel in Amboise, and that was 10 Euros (Sunday and evening rate). It was a lovely evening, so we sat outside and had a Cocktail Maison along with some very tasty amuse bouche before being shown to our table.
We already knew that we were going to have the 5 course menu, and we chose a reasonably priced bottle of Vouvray to go with it.
- Blue lobster, boule de siam, and oxalis.
- Cod, tomatoes, green beans, and basil.
- Guinea fowl, with mushrooms, courgette, and verbena.
- Apricots of Roussillon with fresh almonds.
The first three courses were lovely. The presentation was very good, and each dish had a good combination of fresh flavours and textures. Of those, the cod was probably my favourite. Then we were onto the cheese, of which we could choose 4 or 5 from the board. They had a good selection but it would have been nice to see some British cheeses on there. Dessert was the weakest dish on the menu, it was a little disappointing. Apricots are nice fruit, but I didn't think that they worked well here as the principal flavour on the plate. Their flavour just isn't that great. Having said that, the presentation was very nice and with the almonds it was enjoyable, but I wouldn't order it again.
Service was generally quite good, but slowed down towards the end of the evening as the restaurant filled up. Most of the team spoke good English which was helpful. A constant frustration for me at restaurants with 1 Michelin star, is why so many people continually spill drops of wine onto the table after pouring it. White wine may not be so obvious on the table cloth as red wine, but it's just sloppy service. This happened all evening with the wine and the water. So, service was good but it could have been better.
We paid 70 Euros each for the 5 course menu, with the wine, coffee and service all extra on top of that. In relation to other restaurants we've been to of a similar standard, we thought that is was a fair price to pay.
Overall, it was a good meal, one which we enjoyed, and we would visit again.
