Owner description: At the invitation of Francis I, Leonardo da Vinci came to live at the Château du Clos Lucé and stayed here for the last three years of his life, devoting himself to perfecting his inventions. Leonardo was prolific and inspired, working as an engineer, architect and theatrical director, organising lavish festivities for the Court. At his residence 300 metres from the Château Royal, he drew up plans for a model château for Francis I in Romorantin and designed the double-helix open staircase in the Château de Chambord. The Château du Clos Lucé is dedicated to showing and explaining to the public the great knowledge acquired by the Italian Maestro.

Well worth the time. Enjoyed seeing all is work and inventions! Nice grounds and eating areas. Gained real insight into his life and time in Amboise.

“Learn more about Leonardo di Vinci here”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2014

If you are not familiar with all that di Vinci thought about during his life, you should visit this Chateau. He was quite a thinker and creator. This museum really does a good job illustrating his thinking and drawings.

“Home where Leonardo ate his last supper”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

The chateau itself is small, but notable for its famous inhabitants, and it makes a concerted effort to bring its history to life. It also tries to provide some background on Leonardo da Vinci, focusing primarily on what brought him to France, how he lived his last three years of life there, and some of the inventions he perfected while living in this home. This doesn’t seems to be the place to get insightful history or deeper understanding on da Vinci, although it does provide an opportunity to celebrate some of his impressive achievements. Beyond touring the chateau, the highlight for us was getting to try out the recreations of his engineering projects in the garden. The grounds are attractive and made for a pleasant stroll on a sunny afternoon. This would be a great place to take children, to help introduce them to Leonardo. For adults – especially any who already know a bit about da Vinci – it’s worth visiting to experience the history, but it doesn’t require too lengthy a trip unless you enjoy walking around the grounds. A visit to Chateau du Clos Luce pairs nicely with a visit to the Chateau d’Amboise, and both can easily be done together on the same day.

Dear visitor,
We would like to thank you for your visit of the Château du Clos Lucé.
Your review is very positive ! Indeed, the visit of the Royal Castle of Amboise is complementary with the visit of the Château du Clos Lucé to understand the relation between Francis Ist and Leonardo da Vinci.
Best regards

“Loved it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Being a long time admirer of Leonardo, I found visiting his final home to be a fantastic experience. The interior appears to be well preserved, with visits to his bedroom, kitchen, dining room etc. Although there are not many rooms to see I still enjoyed it. Although the lower level displaying his inventions was not overly impressive, you are able to go to the grounds and see some of these inventions in life-sized models. If you are an admirer of Leonardo this is definitely a must!

“A different chateau”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

It's a nice little castle, filled with da Vinci's creations and experiments... Definitely worth a visit if you are in the Loire Valley, specially because it provides an experience very different from the average chateau you'll be visiting...
