Owner description: At the invitation of Francis I, Leonardo da Vinci came to live at the Château du Clos Lucé and stayed here for the last three years of his life, devoting himself to perfecting his inventions. Leonardo was prolific and inspired, working as an engineer, architect and theatrical director, organising lavish festivities for the Court. At his residence 300 metres from the Château Royal, he drew up plans for a model château for Francis I in Romorantin and designed the double-helix open staircase in the Château de Chambord. The Château du Clos Lucé is dedicated to showing and explaining to the public the great knowledge acquired by the Italian Maestro.

Slightly over-done but enjoyable nevertheless, and a reminder of the genius that was Leonardo da Vinci. Pleasant grounds too. The cafe served good value and tasty crepes/ galettes but service was a little slow. Leave car in car park nearby (1 Euro all day!) and walk into town to see Amboise Chataeu

A nice house, but not impressive or majestic compared to other Loire valley chateaux. The grounds were well maintained and varied - with interesting working examples of mechanical inventions, but the fact that Leonardo da Vinci spent 3 years there seemed almost immaterial. Just a marketing ploy to charge 14 euros for a house visit that takes no more than 30 mins to see in its entirety. It was more impressive that Da Vinci came over the Alps, on a mule, at the age of 64. The town of Amboise was much more interesting, but be warned - virtually everything is closed on a Monday.

Leonardo stayed in this nice chateau for 3 years at the end of his life. They have added some period and later furnishings and had IBM built them some models, staffed it with a few officious locals and have themselves a nice little earner.

I hate to be negative but most of the models are artistic interpretations not actual working models. Leonardo's other house in Vinci Italy is a much better museum of his painting and inventions - and it much cheaper than euro 19.

Having absolutely no idea that Amboise was where Leonardo Da Vinci spent his last few years a visit here was a must. So glad we did. We all know of a few of his ideas/inventions but to see so many in model form was amazing. In the grounds are working models, you can't help but admire the genius of the man. The grounds are beautifully kept and the house was interesting.

Le Chateau du Clos Luce was a a highlight of our month long travels through France - seeing the bedroom of Leonardo da Vinci was a great privilege, along with the prototypes of da Vinci's inventions. The grounds of the Chateau are perfectly tended and the larger working models of Da Vinci's inventions which are scattered throughout the grounds are fascinating! There was a group of French schoolchildren studying his inventions during our visit, and it occurred to me more than once on our trip, how lucky these children are to have such historical sites to explore.
