Owner description: At the invitation of Francis I, Leonardo da Vinci came to live at the Château du Clos Lucé and stayed here for the last three years of his life, devoting himself to perfecting his inventions. Leonardo was prolific and inspired, working as an engineer, architect and theatrical director, organising lavish festivities for the Court. At his residence 300 metres from the Château Royal, he drew up plans for a model château for Francis I in Romorantin and designed the double-helix open staircase in the Château de Chambord. The Château du Clos Lucé is dedicated to showing and explaining to the public the great knowledge acquired by the Italian Maestro.

“Inventions and Gardens Best By Far”
Reviewed 24 August 2014 via mobile

This is well worth a visit but get there early. By 11am the queue was very long. Your tour starts in the house itself but, actually, if you've seen a few chateaux of the Loire then there's little new in the house proper. That said, the basement is where it gets interesting because replicas of Leonardo da Vinci's inventions are there to be seen. The gardens are very good and well worth a wander . There are more life size replica inventions throughout the garden and some you can interact with. You''re likely to spend more time in the gardens than the house. There's a cafe near the entrance but go further into the garden and find the one near the water wheel. It's nicer and so is the setting.

“Great house & fascinating gardens”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

Great house, well preserved and some great things to see. On the way out of the house is a room filled with models of L.D.V's inventions/thinkings.

The garden is great to walk around with big scale models of water wheels, lifting machines etc.

There's also a coffee shop, a small snack bar and a full restaurant.

Well worth a visit.

PS the house isn't accessible with buggies for children, but they can go in and you leave the buggyies outside

“Interesting”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

The house itself was fun. It showcased a few models of his inventions as well as providing a brief insight in the great man's final years.

The gardens were excellent specially for our 4 year old who could run around and "play" on some of the life size models Leo thought up during his lifetime.

Highly recommended stop when in Amboise

“A very good stop - I learned a lot and nice gardens”
Reviewed 20 August 2014 via mobile

We stopped for a few hours yesterday. The castle tours was the right amount of time and interesting. The best part is learning about Leonardo's various inventions as an engineer. There are smaller models with brief explanations. The kids loved the full scale models in the gardens outside. Overall, a nice stop in Amboise.

Great place to go with kids who love to play with all the 'machines' in the grounds. Good value for money.
