Stayed here for four nights towards the end of June in our motorhome.

It really is in a wonderful position, on an island in the middle of the Loire within 10 minutes of the picturesque town of Amboise with its bars, restaurants and shops (a Carrefour City just across the bridge).

Site facilities are high quality, clean and modern, indeed one of the amenity blocks would appear to be almost brand new. If you put to one side the absence of toilet paper, you could almost be on a Caravan Club site. Pitches are spacious and shady but with old fashioned two-pin electrics and someone did seem to have mislaid the lawnmower though. The bar / snack bar is also a welcome amenity, we didn't eat but the drinks are reasonably priced.

It is also one of the most secure sites I've ever come across. Everyone has an individual access code (for both the vehicle access and pedestrian gate) and whilst there are other pedestrian access gates around the site, these are locked early in the evening. The whole site is surrounded by (unobtrusive) security fencing.

The other thing is that it is busy, even at night. Whilst it's not impossible to gain access, burglary on a well lit, popular site would seem to be risky - we always felt safe.

We will return but nevertheless will be aware of others' experiences but don't let this stop you going. We spoke to other seasoned travellers who'd been there before and had experienced no difficulties.

Just returned from a 2 week trip of the Dordogne in a motorhome, we stopped off here for one night on the way home having also stayed here last year. We love the site and Amboise.

Got up early to push on home to find under our van a handbag, pair of shorts etc. Then saw a group of peole talking, husband went over to enquire if they had lost a handbag and was told they had all been burgled in the night. In the end it transpired about a dozen vans had been done, they had all left side windows open at night as it was hot and the blinds had been sliced and stuff taken that was within reach. Most of the vans affected were around us but we had our windows shut and were fine. One Japanese family came running over when they saw the police arrive, they were in a tent and it had been slashed in the night. Money, cameras, ipods, keys etc taken. Police did come quickly and dusted for prints etc. This has also been posted on motorhome facts website.

Its a lovely site so such a shame when these things happen. i shall still return in my motorhome but however hot keep your side windows shut.

Planned for two nights but stayed for seven. Lots to do in the area, Generous shady pitches, friendly, helpful staff- let us change pitch- very good English, good value, spotless washrooms with fabulous floral displays outside! Generally quiet , great parkland on the island for walking, cycling, running and birdwatching, and swimming pool very close by. Felt that they had done what they could to make the area safe.

This is a lovely camp site beautifully situated on an island at which i have stayed six times now. Never again though as when there last May, six other campers and myself were robbed. Camper vans were broken into whilst occupants were asleep, a car was opened and tents ,including my own were opened with a razor blade. Nobody awoke and momey , passports and identity documents were taken. The Police were helpful , but the staff at the campsite were less than interested and shrugged their shoulders in lack of interest. When questioned it was discovered that this happens regularly and yet there are no verbal warnings when you arrive or signs to warn you and no security at night. If you stay here you better stay awake all night, Beware.!!!!

We stayed here for 2 weeks last June - had intended only a few nights but the site was so good and the area so interesting we stayed on. Very reasonable prices, nice shaded grassy pitches, clean facilities and superb location on an island in the Loire. Amboise is a lovely town with excellent restaurants, twice weekly market and interesting historical and cultural sites - don't miss Leonardo da Vinci's house.

Highly recommended.

There were absolutely no security problems - I must say I am suspicious of madjamie's reviews below. He seems to have stayed twice, two years running, and been the subject of theft both times! This does seem somewhat unlikely and I have to take the report with a large pinch of salt. I note also that the other review that mentions theft is from a reviewer (barnaby28) who has made only one review.....

Wary after the reported thefts but enchanted by the town, I booked for 2 nights and eventually stayed 4. Nice large, tree shaded site with unobtrusive security fence all around, coded entry gates and night watchmen. Felt perfectly safe, but obviously use common sense and don't leave valuables in vulnerable tents, wherever you happen to stay. Good facilities - plenty of wash rooms and showers, all with disabled access, no shop onsite but within an easy amble of the town and supermarket without being in the midst of it all. You might occasionally be woken by the odd early morning hot air balloon taking off from the adjoining playing fields, but it just adds to the charm of the place. And mustn't forget the impressive chateau posing imperiously above the opposite river bank, waiting for its close up - catch it at sundown for a beautiful soft pink reflection. Will definitely camp here again should I find myself in the area.

Genious location on a litte island at the river Loire. Very close to the city town centre. Great for cyclists on their way along Loire. In August we found there a great local event with a lot of local food and delicious local beer. The city is very romatic and you may also find it romantic to sit at the camping by the river and admire great all town with a majectic Palace d'Amboise.
