“Secure parking--and Bastille Day festivites to boot!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

My husband and our three children (aged 7, 8 and 10) stopped off unexpectedly in Azay on our way to Bordeaux. We had a good experience--polite and service-oriented reception, clean rooms and a great breakfast, as well as a big-screen TV in the bar, to watch the 2014 World Cup final. The manager served very good local sparkling wine, and beer and soft drinks. But the big surprise was the very nice small town-feel 13th of July (some towns celebrate on the eve of) parade and fireworks in town that night. The parking area is behind the hotel but secured at night so we could leave most of our bags in the car.

Room Tip: The hotel is set back from the street--I did not find the noise bothersome on the first floor up. Ou...

We were booked a month in advance so this was not a last minute thing. Lots of stairs to a small room. Beds were okay. Room was quiet. Bathroom needed a shelf and hooks for clothes/toiletries. Nice to have a TV to watch World Cup news. When checking out we asked to split the bill and the desk clerk said "no" as it was too much trouble. REALLY? I was paying in cash (euros) and my friend using her French credit card. My French friend was not bothered by the refusal, but I do not think this is any way to run a hotel. Quite reasonable compared to other places we stayed--so I guess you get what you pay for.

Stayed one night, booked on the day so not surprising that we had what one hopes is the worst room, right at the top, very cramped, very hot and with apparent drainage problems. The manager did not show any evidence of welcoming guests, other than for their payment. We were told that there was 24 hour access but we were fortunate to be spotted as we returned just after 11.00 by someone locking up. Less fortunate to be woken by returning guests trying without success to enter the hotel for more than an hour. Tried phoning reception to help them but no response. This hotel doesn't really seem to like people. But it does have secure parking and is well situated for a charming central square, and wonderful chateau.

OK we had a bad stay based on the room we were given - read on:
One night - top floor (three flights ups) - I have bad knees and hip and normally just get on with it but this was lots of stairs and no offer of help to get us up to the room.
Reception - polite young girl who tried to help and advise us.
Room very small cramped room - air con was broken (no on/off switch) so we were very uncomfortable once we got our bags up in the room; on asking for it to be fixed, moved or given a fan we were told we would have to wait for the director to arrive maybe in 30 minutes!!!
The outcome was it was turned on full / low so it cooled the room down; however the down side; we could not turn it off in the middle of the night when it was not needed.
Bathroom - well a very small room with a bath and sink in it; however we could not use the bath as a shower as we were in the rafters and the roof slopped over the bath (a hand held shower head was attached to the tap) - infact because of the roof I could not us the thing at all (6 foot tall) - a strip wash in the sink was all I could do.
Restaurant - well a few tables laid up on a small balcony area outside the bar over looking the car park / hotel entrance - that said the maitre d was excellent (chatty and fun) and the food was a good standard and value for money.
Car Park - six spaces free parking in front or secured parking around the back for a few euros.
Bar - OK
Set in a lovely town - well worthy a visit - just stay in another hotel..Well below par for a Best Western Hotel. Very nearly spoiled our whole holiday this one.

Room Tip: Do not take any rooms on the top floor

The hotel was OK for a night, nothing special, but it served us well. We found the reception polite and were shown to our rooms which were clean , a little small, but reasonable. We recommend this as a reasonable place for a stopover.

We stayed at this hotel for one night during our Loire Valley trip by car.

The hotel has a car parking. It has no elevator, but we stayed at the ground floor.

The room was very nice, clean and comfortable. The service was not that great, but maybe because we arrived very late.

Good value for money.

3 of us stayed here for 5 nights, and found this hotel very comfortable and in a good central town location with lots of free parking. This is a well run hotel by Matthieu (who speaks good English and has a querky sense of humour) and his staff, everything spotless, with very regular changes of linens, and towels daily. Breakfasts were plentiful, and additionally provided food especially for one of our party who has a celiac condition (rare in France we found). We also had one evening meal here which was very good, and would recommend the Shredded rabbit starter (not my usual food but very tasty).
We had two rooms on the ground floor (one of our party has mobility needs) and although not luxurious, and the bathrooms need some refurbishment (which will happen in the next 12 months we were given to understand) they were fine for us and quiet with very comfortable beds. The lounge bar, dining room and outside areas are good too.
A very reasonable price of just over £400 for 5 nights bed and breakfast for two, but we suspect the price will increase when refurbishment is complete.

Room Tip: If wanting boiled eggs for breakfast ask for them to be done 'medium' to get them from prope...
