“Good location, excellent service”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We arrived by train and it was an easy walk to the hotel. Hence we did not have the parking problems that other reviewers have complained about.

I had booked a standard room online but when we got to there we found the room a bit small for us. The person at the reception was extremely helpful, and showed us some other rooms, and we paid to upgrade ourselves to a superior room.

We were very happy with the room which was clean, quiet and functional. One of the reviewers complained that there was no tea. On the contrary, what the reviewer referred to as "strange leafy infusions" were tea leaf bags which are of a superior quality to the standard tea bags. I enjoyed my cup of tea, especially as there was only instant coffee (as in many hotels) which I do not drink.

The breakfast was very good, especially the bacon. My husband and I both commented on the taste. On inquiring, we were told that it was local. I am giving the hotel this rating because we found it good value for money, and the service was excellent. It is conveniently located for the Cathedral and the old town The fact that it may be "featureless" as described by others, was not relevant to us.

The hotel is in the perfect location for exploring Chartre being 5 minutes walk from the Cathedral .The downside though is the fact that there is no parking. It is possible to drop off bags at the back entrance but this was not clear on the web site . A central car park is nearby but quite expensive we should have got a four day pass as if you take your car out during the day it puts up the charge . The hotel is modern and nicely designed . We had a premier room with views of the Cathedral. There was a Nepresso machine and tea in our room and a mini bar but you had to ask for key. Also there was air conditioning but it had a bit of a hum which was annoying at night . It was possible to open a window instead . The breakfasts were excellent including fresh fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice ,eggs , pastries and cereal. My daughter had the basic room which did not have tea and coffee or mini bar it was fine except that she was woken up by machinery being operated at 6 am on two mornings we were not sure what noise actually was but if we had stayed longer we would have wanted to change rooms . Overall the hotel represented good value for money and the staff were very pleasant

Room Tip: Avoid the basic room if you can afford superior or premier much nicer

Cordialement

The name is a bit misleading as it is not right next to the cathedral but a 10 min walk away.
Parking is a bit of a hassle, we parked at the cathedrale parking thinking it was the closest but there is a closer parking garage right in front of the hotel. Rooms are standard Mercure, modern, clean, nothing much to say. Ok if you want to stay for a few nights. Staff was friendly and gave some recommendations on restaurants.

We found the Mercure Cathedrale to be a relatively small and functional hotel, well located for the sights, and a touch more modern than the standard Mercure chain hotel. The room looked like it had recently been renovated and ticked all the right boxes (large double bed, flat screen tv, relaxing chair in the corner..). The hotel location was only a 5 min walk to the cathedral and old town, and was easy to find on arrival since it is located on the main boulevard through Chartres. As always with the Mercure brand, the hotel does feel a little cookie-cutter and soulless, and as such it was great for a 2 night stay, but any longer we would have been missing the character and size of a more traditional and/or larger hotel.
Although we didn’t use the lobby breakfast, it looked like it was well-stocked and would be good value for money.
I was surprised (and disappointed) as an Accor Platinum card holder that there were zero extra benefits given during our stay. There was no upgraded room (although the hotel was about a third full), no welcome drink, no special amenity, etc. Other hotels in the Accor chain seem to go out of their way to ensure that the chain’s frequent travelers are well looked after. Others don’t bother. This seems to be one of the latter.
As a footnote it’s worth adding that if you park in the local suggested car-park over the weekend (a huge modern underground affair approx 100m from the hotel) it’s worth checking the final price in the car-park machine before using/buying the hotel’s negotiated discount. The standard weekend and overnight rates may work out cheaper than buying a daily €15/day rate that the hotel offers, but we didn’t find this out until we had already paid the hotel for the discount. We could have saved €12 on our 1 day 14 hour stay if we would have checked first.

We went to this Mercure because the Ibis was full, but this hotel seemed to have its own car park. Wrong. When you click on the P symbol showing hotel facilities it says “nearby”. And nearby is a large underground public car park that cost E12 / night and does not give the security that foreign holiday makers need. On arrival we spent some time driving round trying to find the non-existant hotel car park, which is difficult when the hotel is next to a large square where pedestrians have total priority over cars.

The hotel’s décor is modern in the new Mercure way; the corridors had a carpet with a flagstone pattern, but the air con was working and the rooms at least were well lit. Coffee provided in the room but not tea, only strange leafy infusions. My French was better than the receptionist’s English, which is rare this close to Paris. As usual we didn’t eat at the Hotel.

This is just an average Mercure, with all that this entails. Must book earlier next time.

Bonjour,

This hotel has a great location, about a 10 minute walk to the Cathedral through the lovely small streets of Chartres. It's very modern, clean with very comfy beds and a good, though somewhat expensive breakfast buffet. We found the staff to be very accommodating. Overall a good stay and we would return but there were 2 negatives - no hotel parking, so you have to park in the carpark across the street. It's big and underground and if you take a different entrance to retrieve your car, you can spend ages looking for your car, since the car park is huge and not well signposted. The other minor complaint was that they don't have any family rooms to accommodate a family with 2 teenage kids. (eg, a room with 2 doubles). We had a very comfortable room with a queen bed + sofabed but we would have preferred to have had a real and bigger bed for our teenage sons. Two rooms would have been just too expensive but we knew this ahead of time and were happy with all other aspects of the hotel. Added plus - the windows open so we could enjoy the night time breeze!

Room Tip: Not a room tip, but if you want a great place to ear nearby, go to the Brasserie at the Best Western...

The Mercure is a perfect hotel location-wise! It is close to all of the main attractions in Chartres. My room was comfortable and clean! The only downside for me was that there was no Restaurant or Bistro for an evening meal or drink before dinner - other Mercure Hotels that I have stayed in have this facility.

Bien cordialement
