“Great place to stay”
Reviewed 16 June 2013

Really enjoyed our time at this quaint little hotel. Nothing to complain about except our time was too short there. Make sure, if you get the chance to pop out to the light show which was out of this world. Will certainly be heading back to this hotel.

We stayed overnight in Chartres (to visit the amazing cathedral) and spent a comfortable night at Hotel du Boeuf Couronne. We had a double and though the room was on the smallish side, it had big swing out windows and another small window in the bathroom. All made it more airy. There was a bit of noise from tour buses idling outside the window but we were on the 3rd floor so not as loud for us as for our friends on the 2nd floor. Overall a good deal and great location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the cross street if you care about noise. If you'd rather have more air...

The hotel is a nice place, well positioned just steps from the Cathedral and all the town of Chartres has to offer, and only about 250 metres from the train station. Ideal for a short stopover and very well priced too. It has an elevator – the tiniest I’ve ever seen but it does the job.

The pluses:

Every member of staff is delightful – and can’t do enough to help. We arrived in town at about 10 30am as we had to return our Avis car by 11 am. The very nice lady on reception rearranged her bookings so we could access our room then which we greatly appreciated.

English is really no problem – everyone speaks enough to manage the usual hotel-type issues.

We enjoyed a very nice lunch in l’Amphitryon which is the hotel’s restaurant, as well as a simple continental breakfast – just fresh fruit and juice, yoghurt, cheese, baguette, croissant and jam but all good. There is also a very pleasant bar downstairs.

The downside:

We expected a small room, and that’s certainly what we got. It was really small, and the bathroom, particularly the shower recess, was tiny. The shower curtain wraps around you everytime you try to turn around. The water was hot and good pressure. There was an exhaust fan. There was no hairdryer in the room.

The window opens allowing fresh air, and we were on the quiet side of the hotel so no street noise impinged. However as it was raining we couldn’t leave the window open all night and we couldn’t regulate the temperature of the radiator and it got a bit too warm. In the summer without fan or airconditioner it would be very hot and stuffy I’m sure.

Also, there is absolutely no sound-proofing between rooms and only a thin door to the corridor. The hotel guests on our floor thankfully settled at a reasonable hour and kept talking and water music to a considerate level. I don’t think it’s the type of hotel which will attract party people, but when it’s full neighbour noise could be an issue.

Room Tip: A corner room with two windows to allow a cross-breeze

From the train station, this nice hotel is a pleasant, two-block walk up a gently-sloping hill. If you’re looking for basic food, you’ll pass several such restaurants along the way. Otherwise, the hotel has a more formal restaurant. But its prices are reasonable, the food was great, and it was jam packed the night we ate there. Plus, they offer a very pleasant and filling breakfast. There is also a nice bar. The restaurant and bar both offer inside and outside seating. The wait staff was great.

The folks at the reception desk were quite pleasant. There is a tiny elevator, but it does its job. We had a cheery, corner room – which allowed for a nice cross breeze. Our room was fairly spacious and welcoming. Everything was quite clean. And the room was very quiet. We only stayed one night but would have gladly stayed a few more.

Across the street from the hotel is a large, empty, municipal plaza. Then on a hilltop a few more blocks to the east, the hulking, famous cathedral is clearly visible, as it dominates the central part of town. It’s a massive tourist draw, especially due to its huge and elegant stained-glass windows. We visited for 90 minutes the first day (including part of an organ recital) and then briefly again, the next morning. The church is in the midst of a multi-decade refurbishment, but that does little to hamper your visit. We were also greatly impressed by the very extensive “old town” that wraps around the church, mostly to the south. It’s just loaded with classic, old buildings and inviting, new stores. And there were some very nice, less-famous churches. You could easily spend many hours there. The hotel is located very conveniently to all these activities.

Simply and stylishly decorated with a contemporary look. This hotel has the basic amenities. Great location, handy to Cathedral dining and shopping. But when the sun goes down, the night life in the bar with its band is so loud we could hear it on the third floor with the windows closed.

I stayed at this hotel a few years back in 2007 when I was a French language assistant in a nearby city. I thought the hotel was charming and lovely and needed some touch ups.

Fast forward to 2012 when I come back and stay at the hotel. Things have changed here. The bar next door is now a part of the hotel, the decor of the restaurant has changed, and the rooms have changed as well. The hotel is fantastic. The service was extremely well done and the breakfasts in the morning were lovely. The croissants were spectacular. The bathrooms have been redone and have a comfortable feel to them. My only complaint is the lack of air conditioning or fans. It was a hot weekend. Thank God there were thick curtains to cover the windows.

Chartres isn't far from Paris, but many people only come here for a few hours. It's a charming city and I think it is worth an overnight stay. The Chartres en Lumieres shows is lovely and the town offers some fabulous restaurants.

This hotel will always be my top pick in Paris!

Newly refurbished to a modern style, funky bar, destination restaurant. 3mins from Catherdral across an open square. About 5mins from main shopping street.

Not what you expect from a regional French hotel. Very modern.

We parked in the underground 'Catherdral' car park. Can't remember price other than thinking 'that was alright'!

Very good option. Chartres itself is lovely, lots of places to eat and drink and of course the Catherdral dominates the landscape.

Would definitely use again.

English exellent
