“Luxurious rural retreat in the heart of the Loire”
Reviewed 26 July 2012

We stayed here for two nights on our way home from a family holiday in SW France and really loved it. We have two small children (4 and nearly 2), and we had two adjoining rooms in the chateau - the Grenier a Sel and the Chambre des Chouettes. The rooms were gorgeous and had everything we needed and more, including access to CBeebies which went down very well with our two road-weary children! Our room was beautiful, full of original features and with amazing views.
The first thing that struck us (apart from the amazing setting!) was how relaxed and lovely everything is there. As soon as we arrived, our children were out of the car and playing with the toys in the courtyard, and happy to discover other playmates there. Charlotte and Jerome are wonderful hosts who really go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need, and are especially understanding about the needs of families with little ones! They were particularly kind when on the day of our departure we wanted to leave before breakfast - they insisted on getting things ready early for us!
There really is something for everyone here. A holiday with children can be hard work, but we really felt that we had time for ourselves once the children were in bed, and we could have some lovely grown up evenings eating and drinking like kings and queens! The children would have their tea (prepared by chef Phillipe!) at 6pm, and then we would take them up and come down again for dinner in the courtyard at 8pm. We could actually see the children's bedroom window, and we also were given a baby monitor which helped reassure us that they were safe and sound.
The chateau is really beautiful, steeped in history and surrounded by fields of wheat and poppies, and yet really close to everything you could need. On Charlotte's suggestion we had a wonderful day out at the Chateau de Rivau which we would thoroughly recommend. We would absolutely love to stay here again, and will definitely be back to explore the Loire which has so much to offer everyone!

We had a wonderful time at the Loire Valley Retreat. We only stayed one night but enjoyed every moment of it and wished we had more time. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place to recharge this is perfect. We recommend having dinner there and getting some wine recommendations from Jerome!

We loved staying at Chateau de Charge so much that we returned the following year. The gite is so comfortable and spacious, in a perfect setting within the courtyard which is great with children. Charlotte and Jerome are the perfect hosts and offer lots of advice on wonderful places to visit. What a lovely family they are! They made us so welcome, and made the most perfect birthday cake for our little girl. The evening dinner is so delicious and very sociable and it is also fantastic that there is a children's supper earlier in the evening. The swimming pool was lovely and warm and a great place to relax in the afternoon. This chateau comes highly recommended from us!

This is a wonderful place if you want to get away from it all, or if you want to travel around the local region to see many historical or fun things to do. You are ideally located to reach the town centre with a car, which only takes about 5min. Charge, Loire Vallyey retreat is an ideal place for families or couples to holiday. Charlotte and Jerome are the most amazing hosts, and will endeavour to assist you in anyway, from planning a day trip to advising you on wine. Chef Philippe is also very accommodating and if there is something not on the menu to your taste he will go into town and buy as an example he did for us, a piece of fish. The grounds are also very lovely with a heated pool and little play area for children. We did lots of half day trips which were great, and spend the other half of the day around the pool. If you love wine Charlotte or Jerome can book Alain for an afternoon of wine tasting which we highly recommend. We found some lovely local wines from small producers which you cannot get back home. If you cannot resist browsing the web or checking your email, they also have free wi-fi. All in all this is a fantastic place to stay, with plenty of character and we will definitely be coming back in the future.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great however if you want your own kitchen becuase you are making your own food th...

We stayed here as newly weds for 3 nights and could only wish we had more time to spend in the Loire. We could tell that our hosts Jerome and Charlotte had spent a great deal of effort transforming the medieval compound into the wonderful and luxurious place it is today. Spacious and yet cosy rooms, amazing bathroom with an overview of the old cellar (we stayed in the Chambre du Vigneron). We arrived on a rainy day and felt quite miserable after visiting the Villandry Gardens in the rain. However, the highlight of our day was in fact to cosy up on the couch in the living room and reading our books with the rain going on outside.

Jerome and Charlotte are a wonderful couple who will not hesitate to offer you great tips and ideas on where to visit, help you with restaurant bookings, and all the many other things that excellent hosts would provide their guests with. We thoroughly enjoyed our one dinner at the Loire Valley Retreat and were particularly impressed by the selection of boutique wines from neighbouring vineyards.

The compound is nestle in the midst of wheat fields and gives you the feeling of returning to tranquility after a rather hectic day of town exploring and chateau hopping. We do indeed highly recommend the Loire Valley Retreat to both couples and families and would like to thank our hosts - Jerome and Charlotte for a wonderful stay.

On a family vacation in France in June 2012 we stayed for three nights at the Loire Valley Retreat. After five hours of driving from Paris, when the GPS was showing a few kilometers to our destination we started getting the feeling of being lost. We were zipping through wheat fields that seemed taller than the car at that time of the year. Gorgeous colors, there's something almost hypnotic in how the wheat dances in a light breeze, if you allow yourself to go with its flow. While we did not get lost on the road, once at the chateau we did get lost in Charlotte and Jerome's hospitality. It is bottomless. The chateau has an idyllic location, surrounded almost as far as the eyes can see by crop fields. We stayed in a two bedroom apartment, with a large master bedroom, a separate bedroom for kids and, amazingly, the bathroom is in one of the towers of the chateau. Superb conditions and amenities. Our five years old son made fast friends with host's kids with whom he played in the chateau's sizable courtyard. He often talks about them and about the chateau's chef, who seems to have made quite an impression on him. Needless to say that the chef made an impression on us too. Taste is a given and presentation is an art form in Phillip's cooking. Let Jerome help you pair it all with a local wine and you are in for an enchanting dinner. The ambiance created by the hosts makes the chateau ideal to unwind yourself. It worked perfectly for our whole family. These days it is more or less standard to run into courteous, thoughtful hosts. Charlotte and Jerome exude them effortlessly, and if you are wondering how transcending courtesy looks like, just pay them a visit. We'd love to go back for more.

Jerome and Charlotte have the perfect approach..... they make you feel at home at their GORGEOUS chateau and offer options for indulgence (wine tours, massage, and bike tours), yet totally exude a laid back attitude and let you get on with your holiday. They are welcoming, charming and fun and we enjoyed getting to know them as a couple and to learn about the history of the region. My husband and I and our two daughters (ages 2 and 8) had a marvelous time over our 10 day stay and no two days were the same. This region of France is beautiful with so much to explore and see. The girls especially liked meeting and playing with other children in the courtyard, feeding the chickens, playing "football" with all the little guests, swimming in the pool and exploring the extensive grounds. The toy boxes supplied in the room were a thoughtful bonus as were the changing pad and small foot stool for our toddler. We picked strawberries by the pool and the children even had a collective movie night with the children in the room next store. Each morning either Charlotte or Jerome would chat with us at breakfast to see if we needed any assistance in planning our day. Our freshly prepared meals by chef Philipe were a French culinary delight and much accommodation was made for my sesame and nut allergy. Children's tea at 6PM was a "hit" with the girls as they were presented with child-friendly, yet healthy food (children's shepherd's pie with duck, kids pizza party) with a yummy "pudding" at the end of every meal. The room was tastefully decorated with comfy beds and linens, a wonderful Nespresso machine which we used often, complimentary still and sparkling water replenished daily, and an in-room mini fridge which was a treasure for storing local chèvre and fresh berries for an afternoon snack. Really I cannot say enough positives about our experience there as we will definitely recommend it to our American friends living in Den Haag and beyond. Thank you Charlotte and Jerome for a memorable holiday.
