“a great place to stay: smashing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2012

We stayed at Loire Valley Retreat for four nights in August and wished it had been longer. The owners of the house were very welcoming and we felt not like being yet another guest in the most busy period of the year. The room was nice, clean and quiet. The bed was very comfortable. Although the Retreat is perfect for families with small children, which sometimes can be a problem if you are looking for restfulness, the location of the different rooms made sure that everybody can find what he or she is looking for. We enjoyed the diners at the Retreat and the nice company of other guests and the owners. We also appreciated very much that special wishes, like vegetarian food, were no problem for the cook Philippe. Last but not least the excellent choice of wines, Jerome's and Charlotte's recommendations, the nice dog and cat, and the beauty of the surrounding area made it a perfect stay for us. We will certainly go back.

What an experience for us all staying at this special chateau which made kids feel welcome. The pool is lovely, the rooms very clean and well appointed, toys and books to entertain the kids, plenty of sand and stones to play with and nice touches for parents too! I was travelling with my young children alone so Phillipe the chef kindly delivered each course of my dinner to my room between tending to the guests who were dining at the dining area which was most appreciated. My older son asked if I thought the owners had rental accommodation so that they could share their chateau with people. I agreed they probably did. Will be back for longer to explore more of the area.

My husband and I just spent three nights chez Charlotte and Jerome and it was just lovely. The location is remote but that was perfect for us. We really wanted some peace and quiet and fresh air and we got it.

We stayed in the Boulangerie which was the definition of charm. Our bed was comfortable, the bath was spacious, and it was private. The only negative thing I can say about our time here was that the bedroom in this building was a bit warm at night and there isn't much that can be done about it. Even with the one small window open and the fan going, we were still warm. There's nothing to be done about it, however, it was a warm few days in August and I imagine that the age of the building prevents more windows being installed.

Dining al fresco under the stars was really something special and chef Phillipe made such wonderful meals. The proprietors also offer a carefully curated wine selection by the bottle which guests should definitely profit from. The included breakfast is copious and offers something for everyone. We were very happy with the selection particularly the brewed coffee.

Although the property is a bit out there, it is actually very central to all of the charming small towns and châteaux in the region so it's a perfect point of departure for guests touring the area. I advise travelers considering a stay here to not just stop over for a night, but to stay for at least a few days in order to fully enjoy this special place. The common areas including the garden and the pool area are also wonderful and should be enjoyed as a welcome break from châteaux tours.

Families will certainly appreciate this place with the kid-friendly atmosphere and the pool and garden. There is even a children's menu for dinner.

My husband and I stayed at Loire Valley Retreat in April 2012 and it was the highlight to our trip to France (no word of a lie). La Boulangerie was the most beautiful little cottage, separate from the main building.

The suite is perfect, more than enough room for the two of us. the living area was large and comfortable, while the bed was - hands down - the best that we experienced! The finishing touches to the suite made it so memorable, from the L'OCCITANE shower gel and the sumptuous bed linen.

You must also eat the evening meals there. We enjoyed our meal so much, that I asked for the recipe of the Zucchini soup (and have made it on several occasions since we returned). Ensure you stay long enough to try one (or more) of the many bottles of wine, all well priced between (around 8-15 euros from memory). we bought a 1/2 dozen and took them with us.

As everyone has said, stay as long as you can!! we regret that we had to leave so soon, and sincerely wished we had stayed longer.

if we go back to this part of the world - we'll return!

Room Tip: La Boulangerie was wonderful for a couple - romantic! stay long enough to enjoy the food!!!

On a very wet and windy so called 'summer' day enough was enough, time to look at an escape to better weather. We have always wanted to 'do the Loire' and surely that would be far enough south to meet some decent weather, we have also always wanted to stay in a chateau, the hunt was on! Only one search and we found the Loire Valley Retreat, it was too good to be true, surely? From the journey out of Chinon you wonder what you are heading for, the first time you see the chateau in all its glory is on the straight road leading through its gates, but If you are looking for somewhere to stay that is within walking distance of a main town, with everything on your doorstep then this isn't the place for you. However if you would like to meet the wonderful hosts, Jerome & Charlotte, experience a B&B located away from it all in a great position to explore the Loire Valley with the most luxurious rooms ever experienced in a B&B then look no further. An evening meal is available on a daily 'sign up' basis, food prepared and lovingly presented by the magical Philippe, at a very good price and a wonderful wine cellar with in-house advice provided by Jerome then you have the makings of magical evenings spent on the terrace in the courtyard. So, any downsides to this location, absolutely NOT, the only time we have ever booked for another stay before we have left securing the dates we wanted in September, this gem is well frequented by regular clients - I have never come back from a hotel feeling so chilled and I have been priviledged to have stayed in some of the best around the world. Oh and as for the weather, glorious rising to 34C on the day we left! We are so looking forward to returning in September for a longer stay.

Room Tip: For intimate privacy check out the Boulangerie, a lovely converted bake house. The larger rooms in...

We stayed here for a night on our way down to the Dordogne recently and wished we had stayed for longer. Everything about this place was perfect - from the beautiful, luxurious, huge and spotlessly clean room to the stunning grounds. It is also incredibly child-friendly, and we particularly liked the fact that we could safely leave our toddler sleeping while we had dinner in the dining room within sight (and hearing, via the baby monitor which was provided) of our room. Jerome and Charlotte were charming hosts and both the dinner and breakfast were delicious. We will certainly be putting this on our "must stay" list next time we are in the region.

Room Tip: La Chambre du Vigneron has an enormous bathroom - so big that we moved our toddler's travel cot...

We had a wonderful 2 night stay at Loire Valley retreat. Charlotte and Jerome greeted us warmly and made us feel very welcome and were happy to provide hints and tips for what to see and do in the area. It was incredible to stay in such an interesting chateau full of character and history, with massive timber beams and an original fireplace in our room together with all the modern conveniences. Our room was very spacious and the bed was dreamily comfortable. The bathroom was huge with views out over the countryside. There was also a comfy sofa and tea and coffee making facilities.Breakfast, served in the converted stables, was extensive and we really enjoyed dinner cooked by the chateau's chef. We also enjoyed relaxing in the communal sitting room and appreciated the local area guide books and brochures.written in English.Wifi was appreciated by our 14 year old. We would definitely recommend staying here and would love to stay here again if we have the opportunity.
