Loire Valley Retreat - Chateau de Charge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 July 2014 via mobile

I can recommend the Loire Valley Retreat without hesitation. It was recommended to us by friends and on arrival it was easy to see why. The setting of this sensitively restored chateau is just gorgeous and the owners strike precisely the right note with their welcoming and friendly manner. They are a mine of useful information, offer their visitors very enjoyable get togethers, but are never overbearing and are sensitive to their guests' needs.
Accommodation: stylish but user-friendly. Cleaned mid-week which is a nice touch. We stayed in the cottage for 5 and it was the perfect size. Two big bathrooms and plenty of space for three single beds in one room for the children. Washing machine and dishwasher plus separate large communal laundry room for ironing etc. Everything you could need on holiday with children.
For children: lovely large, play areas (indoor and out), plenty of toys and babysitting included twice a week. The pool is the perfect size and safely fenced. Sheep, donkey and family dogs are a bonus too! The choice of toys is best for the 0 - 11s, perhaps especially for the under 9s.
For adults: good choice of local wines and wine tasting (with babysitting if needed). Interesting local sites. Very easy to relax here.
Tourism: so much to do in this area of France that a week isn't really enough. The tourist infrastructure is impressive. Would particularly recommend family trips to Chinon fortress (Joan of Arc story was a great hit with our kids) and Fontevraud Abbey (get the iPad game/tour for school age children, good fun).
A little further afield near Amboise, the Leonardo da Vinci house/Garden museum is really worth the drive for all the family. Working models produced from sketches of his inventions are interesting to all and the gardens are very atmospheric.
The children also enjoyed the visit to the Sleeping Beauty chateau at Usse. Very kitsch, not such good value as other destinations, but just depends whether you (and any little princesses with you) can resist the call of the fairy tale!
There is also a Bioparc nearby which is sensitively done and has some rare African animals. Good fun and not as depressing as the average zoo.
Saumur is a lovely town for shopping.
All in all - thoroughly recommend a stay here!

We stayed at Chateau de Charge, ( Loire Valley Retreat ) for a week in April this year, as a family with our 2 sons (12 and 16 ). We love France, especially this region , as it has so much to offer in the way of history, castles, wineries, good food and restaurants, fabulous scenery ..I could go on ! We stayed in ‘Les Ecuries’, a renovated 16th century stable block, which offered very spacious and clean accommodation, over 2 floors, with 2 en suite bedrooms. We fell in love with this characterful and historic property, and found it very comfortable, with everything provided that we needed; the memory foam mattresses guaranteed a wonderful night’s sleep! You couldn’t ask for more helpful and friendly hosts as Jerome and Charlotte. As we were the first visitors of the season, Charlotte prepared dinners for 3 of the evenings; all the meals were delicious and thoughtfully prepared, along with excellent regional wines to accompany the food. We also dined out in Chinon a couple of evenings, and would highly recommend ‘Les Annees 30’ a truly gastronomic experience. We were fortunate with the weather as the sun shone most days, but as it was early in the season, and not warm enough we weren’t able to try the outdoor pool, but the pool and grounds looked inviting for the upcoming summer season. Charge is in a very peaceful location, yet only a short drive from Chinon. A great base to visit the area - ‘ 'must sees’ are the towns of Saumur and its castle ( try to fit in a visit to the Cadre Noir, to see the magnificent equestrian displays )…Amboise with its interesting house of Clos Luce, once home to Leonardo da Vinci. Fontevraud Abbey and of course some of the wineries, our favourites were Ackerman, (we love the sparkling Saumur Rouge ! ), Gratien & Meyer and further afield a visit to the vineyards at Vouvray is always a favourite. We would highly recommend Charge for a peaceful and relaxing break in a wonderful area, and hope to return again soon.

Room Tip: Choose Les Ecuries for spacious and private family accommodation; with 2 bedrooms and 2 huge ensuite...

we recently went on a return visit to Chateau de Charge and were extremely impressed with the latest developments. We stayed in the newly extended Boulangerie. The new gite accomodation works perfectly for a family and Charlotte and Jerome have taken care of all the little details and high quality furnishings we have come to expect at Charge - i have to say the new children's playroom is an absolute blessing for those of us with young children and gives a new dimension to the children's entertainment. We went for a mid week stay Tuesday - Saturday and managed to fit in trips to the zoo and to some of the beautiful Chateau's near by. As always Charlotte and Jerome proved perfect hosts and we always appreciate their excellent knowledge of local wines! All in all another fantastic family holiday and we look forward to returning to Chateau de Charge very soon.

Beautiful chateau with modern conveniences. Rooms are huge, like a house. So much to do for families. The pool, the animals, the kids play area, etc. A bit out of the way but the place is so great it makes up for it.

We have just returned from a wonderful family holiday at Loire Valley Retreat. Expectations were high after such good reviews, but we really could not have been more pleased with our holiday.

The accommodation is lovely. We stayed in the Ecuries, the open plan living area is well designed and the interiors are high end and stylish. My husband particularly enjoyed the coffee machine and the coffee capsules provided. The bedrooms are large, and we loved the high ceiling of the master bedroom, and the large shower in the bathrooms. Having Occitane products is a nice touch as well and a real treat.
Our children were so happy here, playing in the garden, with the swings, slides, sandpit and swimming in the heated pool.
Its the little things though that really make it stand out - the chest of toys and the blackboard in the gite, the brand new games room (with tea making facilities), the sandpit where the slides and swings are, coffee machine, travel cot with extra mattress in, the wines for sale, very large and comfortable bed.
I also especially enjoyed the breakfasts in the stunning breakfast room - not having to think about one meal a day for the family, and the tidying up that goes with having a 3 and a 1 year old, was a real treat.
Lastly, Jerome and Charlotte are wonderful and the perfect hosts. Always there if you need them and very helpful, but not intrusive. Having a meal on arrival is really appreciated, and we also enjoyed the mid-week meal and bbq.
Thank you for a lovely holiday and we'll be coming back next year!

We have just returned home from another memorabke stay (our third in three years) at the LVR. It is the perfect holiday destination for both children and parents as children have the freedom to play and enjoy themselves whilst parents can relax in luxury. Charlotte and Jerome are the perfect hosts and nothings seems too much trouble.
The new play room and the trampoline, in particular, were a big hit with our eldest son and for my husband and I there is nothing lovelier than watching our boys play in the courtyard with the other children whilst sipping a chilled glass of the local white wine. The accommodation is spacious, luxurious and well thought out. Some things of note for us are very comfortable beds, nespresso machines, iPod docks and luxury bathrooms.
Whether we decide to head out to one of the many beautiful local chateaux or relax by the pool we always seem to have a great day. Charlotte and Jermone deserve all their success, they have worked very hard for it but made it look so effortless and easy.
We can't wait to see you again next year.

As soon as you arrive you instantly feel relaxed and at home. Charlotte and Jerome are the best hosts I have come across, nothing is ever to much trouble and they have thought of everything. The location is beautiful and peaceful and the accomodation outstanding. As the mother of two small children the biggest bonus for us was that we could relax in the evenings with a great bottle of wine, fun company and know we were just a few yards from our sleeping children. I can't recommend this place more highly (although I'm worried I'll never get a room next year now!)
