“A truly outstanding break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2010

We chanced upon the chateau on the Stopover Connections' website. While the photos and information led me to expect a high standard of accommodation, we were completely blown over by the reality. As all the reviews repeatedly confirm, the Chateau has been beautifully restored and the rooms are just perfect including the bed which was more comfortable than my own. The luxurious and capacious bedrooms tempt you to spend hours in them but don't give in to that as you will miss the most unique aspect namely the hosts Charlotte and Jerome. Their easy charm quickly brings you to a state of such relaxation that you feel you are holidaying with friends. But there is nothing forced or false about this. They are so obviously genuinely sociable people who love to meet others and to share their detailed knowledge of the area and its wines. Their ease has an infectious quality and soon the guests are speaking freely with one another which is hugely important because this is a small operation with only four rooms. At the same time there is no pressure to socialise. Their five year old Louis is equally sociable and our two boys were whisked off within minutes of arrival to discover the wonders of the grounds - toys, goats, fruit, sword fights, swimming pool and a game of rounders with Jerome and the adults before bed. Charlotte is also a wonderful cook and I cannot recommend highly enough taking your meals in the Chateau whenever you can, especially if you have children. You will eat a far better meal than you're likely to get in the restaurants of nearby Chinon and Jerome's expert hand will guide you to some glorious wines. The children's tastes will be perfectly catered for and they can then run freely about the grounds leaving you to linger over your meal in the company of the other guests or just quietly on your own, as you choose. The week of our arrival was a special one because the Chateau had taken the number 1 spot on Tripadvisor for B and Bs in the Loire. This could not be more richly deserved. Like others who have reviewed this wonderful place, I have never before taken the trouble to write a review.

We had a fantastic time at Loire Valley Retreat with our 2 and half year old little girl.
Rooms were very spacious and extremely comfortable. A holiday is so much better with a comfortable bed, and the large beds at Chateau Charge were very comfy!!
Charlotte, Jerome and their family made us feel like we were staying with friends, except these friends did everything for us, but were not at all intrusive or 'in your face'. My only hesitation in recommending Chateau Charge is that it will be full before we get a chance to book it again!

It is a gem of a hotel run by a lovely couple who go out of their way to ensure that you have a wonderful holiday. Whether it be with tips how best to spend your time, both on sunny or rainy days, or providing great food, wine, an company, their attention to their customers is absolutely top class and by the end of the week, you feel that you are a part of thier family, and the Chateau is your home.

We chose Chateau Charge because of the rave reviews and they were right. Beautiful spacious rooms, superb cooking (don't bother to go anywhere else for your evening meal) and a warm welcome from Charlotte and Jerome. When we arrived we immediately relaxed and I noticed that the visiting children playing in the enclosed courtyard were calm and happy - so obviously their parents were too! Jerome stocks a good selection of local wines (at cost price) and when we asked for a box the day we left and he was out of the wine we wanted he immediately drove to the producer and picked a box up for us. Fantastic.

A cliché I know...but this really is the first time we've ever taken the time to post any kind of feedback or review after a holiday. The location was idyllic, the food wonderful but, above all else, the hospitality and welcome is something that everyone needs to experience. Charlotte and Jerome have created something quite unique by allowing their guests the freedom to choose exactly how they want to spend their time at the Loire Valley Retreat (from private ‘get away’ to fully catered holiday where other guests soon become friends over long evenings of food and wine). Another cliché…we will be back.

This was our first trip travelling with our 8 month old and I hunted and hunted for a place that looked child friendly, had good reviews and fitted into our budget. We were also after something a little different and didn't want a standard hotel and we were a bit nervous about how we'd go travelling with bubs. We were getting a bit desperate as the reviews for many other places in the region were hit and miss. I knew exactly in my mind for the style of accommodation I was looking for but until I came across the website for the Loire Valley Retreat, I hadn't found it. It's therefore with pleasure that I add to the collection of already outstanding reviews.

Location: Quite, peaceful, country location away from it all but close enough to manage half-day or day trips to the major Loire Valley attractions (Villandry, Chinon, Ussé, Saumur, Chenonceau etc)
Child Friendly: We had bought everything 'just in case' with us, but need not have. The attention to detail was excellent - a very clean baby bed was already installed upon arrival and perfumed disponsible nappy bags were also provided. A guest kitchen is available, so we could easily wash bottles (or use the dishwasher ), and help ourselves to the microwave to heat up baby food. High chairs are also available. Our lovely hosts, Charlotte and Jérôme, also offered the use of a steriliser and were willing to make baby purée on request. They have adorable 5 year and 9 month old children, so they know what it's like! We also popped out little girl into the pool for the first time and she loved it.
Rooms: Beautifully renovated, very clean and comfortable bedding, lots of towels, iPOD docking station, TV, DVD (and DVD's or books to read on loan for free), real coffee machine, kettle, real hairdryer and not that horrible thing that's attached to the wall that you see in most hotels, tea and hot chocolate sachets. Ah yes, they remembered the hot chocolate! There is also a minibar where the price of a chocolate bar or drink won't send you broke like in most hotels. We stayed in the Boulangerie, which was ideal as we could pop our baby to bed in the bedroom upstairs and still make use of the living area downstairs. Other rooms in the Château also have a second annexed bedroom for children so that parents can still enjoy their main room without disturbing the children. Perfect!
Food: While officially there is no restaurant, on most nights a delicious evening meal is provided at a very reasonable price which you can eat outdoors during the summer months or indoors in the communal kitchen/dining area or in your own room. Breakfast is 'help yourself' to freshly baked 'pain au chocolat', croissants, baguette, salami, cheese, cereals, juice, jams, nutella (ah yes, the nutella), yoghurt etc.
Salon: There is a communal 'salon' where you can sit back and enjoy a good book or flip through the comprehensive file of what to see and do in the region.
Pool: About 10m long and heated with sunlounges and pool towels available
Hospitality: 10 out of 10. Charlotte and Jérôme are wonderful hosts - they effortlessly manage to blend just the right mix of privacy with time to share a joke, have a good chat and offer you a taste or two of the excellent local wines, which you can also buy on site.

We stayed for 4 nights but would have loved to have stayed for another night except that they were booked out - I wonder why?

Found this little gem on tripadvisor when traveling through France. What a wonderful, beautiful place. . . and the hosts, Charlotte and Jerome, just made the experience that much better. The room we stay in was the one of the nicest places we've stayed. . . and we travel a lot! I wanted to pick up the room and transport it home with me. Outstanding accommodation in a rural setting with a short trip to the town. Don't miss this place. . . I can promise it will be one of the most memorable places you stay!
