“Historic Hostellerie”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

This is a special place to stay. As previous reviewers have highlighted - not luxurious or overly smart and not for the less mobile. However, if looking for an atmospheric, historic hotel in the centre of Chinon this is ideal.

The owners were welcoming and helpful, the room spacious and comfortable and the price for the room was very reasonable even for the larger room.

Seen previous comments on the breakfast, some of which I can understand. The owners could either up the cost of the room and include breakfast, or up the quality of some of the items. Though the bread goods were delicious!

Would happily recommend and stay again.

That was a great family experience, in this historic hotel in the very center of Chinon. Do not expect an outstanding standard of comfort (average bathroom and no air conditionning) but we loved the authenticity of the building at least of the XV century. We had a nice bedroom for 4 (the Pantagruel room) with a little adjacent room in the tower.

The Hostellerie Gargantua is one of the most atmospheric hotels we stayed at during our recent trip to France. Its positives are a great location in the middle of Chinon, a picturesque building and large rooms (particularly the Grangousier Room). The downsides are that there are no lifts and thus luggage has to be carried up the spiral staircase, the breakfast is limited considering the cost charged and the WiFi will only work in the public areas. The WiFi issue is due to the thick stone walls reducing the strength of the signal, which suggests additional stations should be installed. Nonetheless the Gargantua is a cost-effective, comfortable base to explore Chinon and the beautiful Loire Valley. The hotel has 3 car spaces in the square at the rear for guests.

The Hostellerie Gargantua is very well situated, on one of Chinon’s picturesque old streets, near the chateau, and within easy reach of many restaurants, shops and cafes. Turrets, a stone spiral staircase, tapestries and paintings give the hotel plenty of character, and the bedrooms are pleasant too. Our children had a standard twin bedded room, which was absolutely fine, although our ‘superior room’ was larger and more elegant, with a little sitting area in the turret and a four poster bed. Although this is not a smart hotel with masses of amenities (no lift or air conditioning), it still seemed very good value given its location, character – and efficient friendly service. We ate in the bistro restaurant the second night, and enjoyed the regional dishes and very good local wine.

The Grangousier room was very spacious and full of character. The room and bathroom was spotless. The location was perfect. The owners went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that we had a great visit in the Chinon area. This hotel is a real gem!

We loved this place - It's curling staircase - Big room - 4 poster bed -Great view - We even had our own turret room - Great for a writer!!!!!! Of course the location in magical old Chinon didn't hurt either. The proprietor was charming and down to earth. We would have stayed longer but felt lucky to have found a room straight off the street without a reservation. This is a great place to stay - Book ahead!

Room Tip: Not all rooms have views as some of the reviews have stated - Ask for one that does!

We stayed in Gargamelle's room, at the top of a winding and uneven ancient spiral staircase. It certainly had character and we loved it, but also quite a climb with luggage. The room didn't have much of a view standing up, but laying down in the bed I could see half of the fortress' clocktower. You cannot beat the combination of location, price, and atmosphere.

Wifi is available in the lobby and a nice sitting room which adjoins it.

There were a few minor inconveniences. The room keys come attached to large weighty keychains. They are nice to look at but less so to keep in your pocket. The window has no shades, which is great if you wish to rise with the sun.

I would not order the 9.8 euro breakfast. It is a very limited selection of cold food (basket of bread and pastries, yogurt, some packaged cheese slices, and coffee.) By the time we got there (around 10am, breakfast runs until 11) all of the remaining pastries other than croissants were badly burnt. You can put together a better breakfast for far less at one of the nearby patisseries.

I regret that your stay did not give you total satisfaction and thanks you for having indicated me different inconvenience on Trip Advisor.
About our pastries, I am going to bring a particular attention to the quality of those.
I wished however specified that all the windows of our rooms have curtain. In your room, this one is integrated into the window and it is sliding.
Many thanks for your stay in our Hostellerie.
Olivier.
