My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Diderot this past December to celebrate the new year; my sister and my cousin and her husband met us in Chinon and stayed at the Hotel Diderot as well. The Dutheil family – Laurent, Martine and Francoise – are generous hosts who make a stay at the Hotel Diderot warm, comfortable and friendly. The hotel itself is located within a 15 minute walk of anywhere in Chinon and is a beautiful 18th century French renaissance building, evoking a stay in a large family home; the Hotel Diderot is no impersonal, cookie-cutter chain hotel. The rooms are clean, comfortable (with new flat screen TV’s and free wi-fi) and non-smoking and the breakfast room is warmed by a wood burning fireplace and replete with fresh baguettes, brioche, croissants, fruit, yogurt, goat cheese and Laurent’s deservedly famous weird, wonderful and delicious home-made jams. But beyond the hotel’s charms and the tasty breakfasts are the hosts themselves. Laurent, Martine and Francoise (and the boss, Boubi, the orange cat) are warm, friendly and helpful and will go out of their way to make sure your needs are met, whether it’s an extra pillow, a restaurant suggestion or reservation, recommendations about the best chateaux or sites to visit, the best wines of the area or a word to be translated. The Hotel Diderot is our home away from home in the Loire and we will be back.
