Hotel Le Plantagenet
Ranked #8 of 15 Hotels in Chinon

Look no further than the delightful Hotel Le Plantagenet if looking for a stay in the Loire valley. Chinon is a characterful town and the hotel is just on the square dominated by the imposing statue of Jeanne d'Arc. We were warmly welcomed, the hotel rooms had air-conditioning and newly refurbished bathrooms and we enjoyed a delicious breakfast the following morning. One downside is that there isn't a lift and the stairs are steep and winding. We would have loved to have stayed longer as the hotel has a pleasant garden in which to enjoy the fabulous sunny weather. The hotel has a wonderful restaurant and there are many small restaurants in the town too. We will definitely be back. It is an ideal place to stop enroute from the Normandy ports to the Dordogne.

We stayed one night here. It was fair for what we paid, I suppose, but felt more like two star than three.
The room (which looks nothing like web photos) was clean, though didn't smell or feel it. Everywhere smells a bit fusty. A bit like 1980s b&bs in Blackpool! However, it was comfortable enough once we worked out how the air con worked. The room was in the attic and annoyingly had twin beds shoved together, meaning my partner and I had to traverse an annoying gap in the mattress.

Friendly enough staff and secure accommodation for bikes. It did what we needed, but Chinon is so nice that if we were to do it again I think we'd pay a bit more and stay elsewhere.

This is possibly one of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in! It has the dubious honor of dirty rooms, smoke-filled textiles (... they’ve never been cleaned since the anti-smoking ban in public places in France) and a hotel owner who clearly thinks that the guests are there for entertainment.
On the positive side, Hotel Plantagenet has a very good location in the middle of Chinon, but BEWARE … when you ask for a restaurant recommendation, you will be sent next door to Le Lion d’Or (owned by the same people), where the food is disgusting, the service non-existent and the carpets and textiles smell just as strongly of stale cigarette smoke as the adjacent sister hotel.
This is a clear example of the hotel owner taking advantage of their location on the tourist trail and frankly, the hotel inspectors should be brought in to inspect the facilities in both hotels.

Well located in the old town, opposite the market square and close to restaurants. The hotel is like a flash back 30 years. There is a shared coffee and kettle at the end of the corridor, there is no lift, and circular stairs with carpet and stair rods. The bathroom had a beige coloured bathroom suites with some bits white. It was clean, and appeared to have been done up, but badly. For example the tap in the washbasin was so close the the overflow you could not get your hands under to wash, and the shower hose didn't fit properly so flapped around. The bath was odd with a flat bit to shower on, a gully where the drain was and a slanted other end - no good unless you have good balance! The small window did not open in the bathroom and there appeared no fan so there was a damp drain smell. The bedroom was drab with old furniture, however the bed was comfortable.
The market starts setting up at 6:30 am, on a Thursday which was noisy.
The breakfast was good on the first day, but on the second day there were more people and most things had run out. It was a waste of money as the breakfast girl seemed dis-interested that most things had run out at 8:30am!
There is a nice small garden where you can have an evening drink.
The hotel is used for cycling groups, motor bike groups and small coach parties.
Would not recommend this hotel unless you want old fashioned.

My favourite thing about this hotel was the wonderful breakfast. There was a large selection of items, including crepes. There is a large enclosed yard behind the hotel. This appeared to be quite useful for biking tours.

The hotel itself appeared outdated. Our room was clean, but could use some renovations. We were located on the third floor. There is not an elevator so climbing the stairs could be a challenge for some people.

Location is decent. There is free parking across the street. The river is about 100 meters away.

Neither my spouse or I could connect to Wifi on the 3rd floor. We had to go down to the first floor to connect.

Room Tip: Unable to connect to wifi on the 3rd floor

This was our last stop of Normandie Brittany and Loire Valley trip at France. I liked Chinon very moch but the hotel was amazing. The furniture and rooms were fantastic. Hotel staff was very friendly and guided us to see the nearby places. Breakfast was so wonderful and deliciouls. The location of the hotel is very nice that is just near the river.

The Plantegenet is located close to the river on the edge of the old part of the city within easy walking distance of the sights (except the castle). We have stayed at the hotel maybe 10 times as well as two others in the area. The ownership changed about three years ago after our last visit and many improvements have been made. We liked it before and like it even more now as a comfortable 3 star hotel in a scenic city. There is ample parking across the street except on Thursdays when a market sets up and takes all the parking spaces. The hotel is clean and well run, the breakfast is very nice and the staff very accommodating. The new owner recently purchased the hotel next door including the restaurant. We ate at the restaurant two times and put it as the best in Chinon. We have previously eaten at all the better restaurants in the city. We will be visiting Chinon in the future and will again stay at the Plantegenet.
