“Only the location is good”
Reviewed 11 April 2013 via mobile

If you like staying in a hostel at hotel prices, this is the place for you. My sister and I shared room 31 and this is what we found. A room carpeted in wicker matting murder on bare feet, one small bar of soap for sink and tub, not replaced or supplemented until it was a sliver, two very small threadbare bath towels but only one hand towel, two small plastic glasses one of which did not hold liquids (we borrowed ceramic coffee cups from the dining area that were replaced the following morning with one small plastic glass - apparently we were expected to wash out and reuse the one from the day before that actually held liquid), a reception area that is staffed from only 7:30 am til noon and from 4 pm til 8 pm (so don't try checking in at any other time), a breakfast with breads and butter but no knives for the butter, no wifi in room 31 - it's FOUR flights up (no lift!) under the roof so the signal can't reach it - in spite of the hotel's promotional material claiming that there is free wifi "sur tout l'hotel", and perhaps worst of all no ice or fridge or any way to chill a bottle of Loire Valley vin blanc! The only good thing about Hotel Modial is it's location which is, admittedly, excellent. A total rip-off in my opinion.

After 20 p.m. there's no staff from the hotel, so one has to check in before that. The reception is situated on the 2nd floor of the building - no elevator! Thank God our room was on that same floor. No noise from the disco/bar though. The room were clean but there was no door to the toilette. Bad!

It has a great location, its a step away from everyting.

Very convenient location in central Tours, good for exploring the city. Reception was two floors up, which we knew. We had to be there between certain times to check in, but had been duly advised. The room was plain, but clean. We had their breakfast, which was convenient. We were there on a Sunday evening, so the very loud music cited in other reviews was not a factor. The brasserie under the hotel was a great spot to eat.

This hotel was very accomodating for us. Some rooms were better than others and once you have the right room and don't need to use a lift it is in a great location. The first floor is up 4 flights of stairs. There is a nightclub below room 16 ( which is fab) which is on until 5 am in the morning. It is very loud but we nearly missed the music when it wasn't on on the other nights!! My only negative is the lillies on the first floor. I am allergic and though the girl working there was very kind and put them away when we stayed on the firt few nights, the owner put them back out on the third day- she didn't seem to care. If they had roses or any other flower it woudl have been perfect.

Nice hotel, very nicely decorated and well situated in the center of Tours...
We didn't have problems with noise from the night club as we stayed there a monday night and the night club is closed that night. But what bothered us was that there was an awful smelling stench in the bedroom. I think they must have recently redecorated, or changed the carpet and it smelt terrible! If we had slept more than one night I would have been worried for my health!
Other problem was the toilets from the other rooms. The toilet flush made a very loud noise and we could hear the flushes from the other rooms loud and clearly in our room! Also the doors to the rooms are not in very good condition and make a lot of noise and in the morning don't expect to have a nice quiet lie in as you can hear everyone talking in the hall way. We were woken by the cleaning lady talking very loudly to the receptionist!
On arrival I noticed that there was only one towel in the bathroom, I mentioned it to the receptionist who said she would bring us one before she leaves (as the reception closes at 20:00). We never got that second towel and when we went back to ask for it again, the receptionist had already left! so great service!
I have travelled quiet a lot and consider to have a reasonable experience of hotels around the world.
The majority of hotels allow you to have breakfast in the dining room and allow you to take it back to your room yourself for the dining room price (not the room service breakfast price). in this hotel you don't have the choice! if you want breakfast in your room you HAVE to pay the room service! and if you have breakfast in the dining room you HAVE to stay in the dining room!
That is what the receptionist told me!
I find that ridiculous! as when you have breakfast in your room it costs more money because you're paying for someone to bring it to you. so therefor if you go get it yourself it should be the same price as the dining room price.
When leaving our room with our suitcases in hand we had to jump over a big bag of dirty washing which was placed right in front of our door! it's not necessarily the easiest way to get out of a hotel room!

My conclusion would be that it's a nice hotel to stay in but they need to change the toilet flushes and the staff... or train the staff more properly to offer a better service, be more welcoming and avoid talking loud in the corridors...

We are a French-American family who speak native-level French, lived in Paris approximately 20 years in all before moving to the US in the late 1990s... and know the country very well.

We have have stayed at the Hotel Mondial a number of times over the years, as we have several good friends with homes in the Tours area...and until this time were fine with the somewhat challenging aspects described above - cranky French staff (one can "seduce" most of these people verbally if one speaks native level French); hotel check-in three steep flights above the street and all rooms 1 to 3 floors higher than that, with no elevator (take light luggage, and warn older and movement-restricted friends to stay away ), wierd check-in policy (they are not present from 12h00 to 17h00, then absent totally after 20h00 - be warned) etc. Until this time, it was all worth it as the price was right and the view over the Place de la Resistance, and the relative centrality of the hotel as a base camp for Tours, Vouvray, Chinon, etc, was great. This time, however, our experience was awful enough that I am led to write my first review on this site:

Be warned that there really is a night club on the small street just adjacent to the Place de la Resistance that literally pumps away until 4am, and that can be heard -and felt- all throughout the Hotel MOndial Tours building -- the horrible loud noise and thumping really only begin at about midnight, when the staff are *not* present, and will continue every night until at least 4am. The club pumps the noise up to its maximum as their final set is ending, and even with earplugs, it was quite audible.

Like another commenter above, I had the experience of the staff denying knowing anything about the noise or the idea of a nightclub when I asked about it in the morning...or on the second morning, when I commented to a different person, who admitted that there was a nightclub but went out of her way to make me feel guilty me feel guilty for not having phoned her to tell her about it...in the middle of the night, when she had already made it clear make it clear that no staff is not present (and how were we supposed to know about this nightclub, before the night?). This second staff member also made a commetn about no one in their right mind would stay on the Place de la Resistance anyway -- a real insult to the intelligence of her own hotel guests, as well as to other people who lived on the Place.

We will difinitely *not* be staying at this hotel again, which is sad for us, as we have a good friend who lives on the Place de la Resistance and having this hotel right next door to their apartment was wonderful, in earlier years.

(We actually checked with our friend whose apartment is in a different section of the Place, not physically attached to the building with the nightclub...and she laughed, saying that it was unfortunately known that the "wing" of the Place that was physically connected to the nightclub had real sleeping problems, but the other three "wings" had no problem at all with noise during the night.)

Finally, the hotel's rates have gone up 33% in the two years since our last visit (2007) -- the hotel is not longer really in the category of inexpensive in any case...and the fact that they have renovated some of their rooms cannot change the awful reality of the nightclub in the framework the building that forms their part of the Place de la Resistance.

It's hard to say this, as we had loved earlier stays in this otherwise charming funky hotel... but for our family, Hotel Mondial Tours in 2009...

...gets a very big "thumbs-down."

Overall our stay at this hotel was wonderful. Our room was extremely spacious and very well decorated, and there were two large window/doors that opened out onto the Place. The bathroom was recently renovated too and included a double power shower. The room, bathroom and general areas of the hotel were kept neat and clean. The location of the hotel could not have been better, it was in the centre of Tours, very close (5-10 mins walk) to Place Plumereau where all the restaurants are, and the same distance in the opposite direction to the train station, where you can easily catch trains to nearby chateaux (we visited Chenonceau - beautiful). We read a few reviews about the hotel before we visited and thank goodness because as per below you need to know about the check in policy - the hotel is unmanned between about 1pm - 4pm ish so you MUST call or phone ahead to get your room number and the door code. We did this though and there was no problem - in fact I found it was easier to just walk straight into our room without all the check-in hassle.
It's true that the hotel does have flights of stairs to climb, so bear in mind that the hotel would not be suitable for disabled or inactive guests. We had to climb 2 flights just for our room and there were another 2 flights with more rooms!
We experienced no noise problems in the hotel. We looked directly onto the Place and although there does appear to be a nightclub underneath, there was only one night we could actually hear any noise, and even then it wasn't excessive at all. There is a shop across the way which has neon blue lights flashing (ironically, a curtain shop) however this didn't bother us during the day, and our curtains were heavy enough to cover the flashing during the night.
The staff were extremely polite and courteous, I experienced absolutely no abruptness whatsoever. Having said that, I spoke French to all staff, and it did seem that both receptionists (I think one was also the owner/manager?) only spoke limited English. Still, they are willing to try their English, and if you are willing to try a bit of French (even the basics, like mine!) it will be fine! I have to say having read a few of the other reviews, I was a bit worried about how the staff were going to be, but they could not have been warmer or friendlier to us, and they always took the time to ask how our day had been.
We didn't have any breakfast during our stay, only one cup of coffee on the last morning, which was instant coffee. It's probably worth going out for breakfast. There are so many lovely places to eat closeby that do coffee & croissant or pan au chocolat, I didn't find it any issue at all - in fact I preferred going out!
I would probably say that if you do have a higher budget, bear in mind that what the hotel offers is reflected in its price (58Euros / night) so if you are looking for 24 hour staff, full restaurant etc, it's worth looking elsewhere.
However for those wanting a quiet stay, or willing to sacrifice a bit for great value, this is a fantastic wee hotel, we had a really enjoyable stay and will most definitely return.
