Description: In the very centre of Tours, Rive Gauche is a veritable escape from a world of fast food and menus lacking imagination this is a temple to gastronomy, a place where food is of the utmost importance, where good company is a must and excellent service is par for the course. A beautifully modern spot where a slate floored terrace offers a comfortable and sunny place to enjoy summer lunches and a welcoming, warm interior surrounded by tongue in cheek artworks encourage long languorous meals and slowly sipped bottles of wine. In the kitchen tradition and following fashion is ignored in favour of experimentation, the dynamic menu is a reflection of a chef and his team set free to try new things and express their creativity.

We discovered this restaurant on the last day of our trip in Tours, stopping for lunch. Both of our meals were extraordinarily good, I had the lobster ravioli followed by the gambas for a main course, my husband had the veal liver. Both meals were beautifully prepared and the service was very good. We sat outside at one of the few tables on the street where we could enjoy the street activity.

We both would recommend this restaurant for the food, the service and the general ambiance. Be aware this is a pricey restaurant but we found it well worth the cost.

For our fisrt time in Tours, we followed Trip Advisor and chose Rive gauche. Right in the center of town, in what seems to be the "in" street of Tours, we were welcomed and showed a very nice dining room, modern and open. The staff was friendly, funny and knowledgeablee when it came to wine. The menu is creative without being mad. We really had a lovely evening and i would definitely recommend this place

Linda and I spent a week in Tours and had dinner the first night at Rive Gauche. It was so good and the
service was so frienly and helpful that we deceided to have dinner there on Valentines Day. It was an excellent decision. The attention to detail int the preperation and presentation of the food together with the knowledge local wines that the team at Rive Gauche team brings to the table combined to make it a perfect night. In brief, the food and dwine were wonderful and the staff was excellent. If we are back in Tours we will be back at Rive Gauche. Don’t miss it.

you get to sit in comfortable chairs in a sitting area, have an apperatif, some amuse bouche, and order your food. Once your food is ready they move you to your table to eat. Great food, really well done.

Having had an incredible dinner at rive gauche last July we detoured to the restaurant on our way down to the south again this year but were shocked to discover that the rive gauche which lives on in our memories as one of the finest restaurants known to man, sadly no longer exists.

The restaurant has had a total facelift but the decor was the least of our concerns. We discovered the chef had been replaced in December 2011 and the difference between the tasting menu we had this time and the a la carte dinner we had last year was immense. The tasting menu was bland and hugely overpriced, every course came with something that hadn't been though through properly. Very average compared to the gastronomic master class that was on display last year.

However, even just-above-average food would be excusable, but unfortunately the rive gauche's problems run much deeper. This was mainly to do with the service, two waitressses who were clearly waiting for their shift to end and who made mistake after mistake then made excuses if you dared question them, ridiculous behaviour when you're paying through the nose for elaborate gastro pub food dressed up as a tasting menu. I don't usually care about bad service but they were exceptional, even bizarrely offereing us some molten hot bread that looked like the kind you buy and freeze at home, without butter, when all the tables around us had homemade bread and plenty of butter. Maybe they didn't like us? Who knows? But again it's nowhere near the experience we had a year ago where every detail was tended to by a maitre d' and every course blew our minds. We had an unforgettable night in 2011 but this year has ensured we won't be traveling out of our way in order to eat at the rive gauche, the bland facelift should have set the alarm bells ringing but we wanted thenplace to be even half as good asmlast year. Alas the heart and soul of the place have gone, our question is where did the previous chef go off to, that's where we'll detour to next time. Don't waste your money on this place it's a great shame how the mighty have fallen.
