Comfort Suites Epernay
Ranked #10 of 14 Hotels in Epernay
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Comfort Suites Epernay is a nice straightforward place to stay. The historic facade of the building reminds you that the new hotel used to be an old "barracks" and looks appealing. We stayed in a room that was divided in a sitting room with a small kitchenette (no utensils), with a staircase leading to a nice bedroom area with an internal balcony where you can look down into the living area. Furthermore the room was complimented a separate rather spacious and clean bathroom.

Although overall it is a basic hotel, it is a good choice when you are visiting the Champagne area for a few days and you need a base to visit the vineyards. But it is equally appealing for quick stop-overs if your holiday is taking you further into Europe.

There is free Wi-Fi, Free Parking, the rooms are clean and comfortable though simple, the staff is friendly and well there is lots of Champagne close by. What else would you need, I think price quality was definitely right and I would return and recommend it to people.

Breakfast is somewhat simple but it's all there, but you're in France why not get a Baguette/ Croissant with a coffee on a terrace in the city centre.

The other reviews are accurate. The hotel is a historic building recently converted into a hotel. Its nearly new and very clean but quite simple. Our room was a suite with separate living and bedrooms including a small kitchenette (with no utensils). It has free car parking which felt reasonably safe, free wifi and it was dog friendly (EUR 8 charge). Its about 5mins drive from town and too far to walk. Ideal for an overnight stop but not too much longer.

We spend a long weekend in Epernay and decided to give the hotel a try although the hotel is fairly far from the city centre. The distance from the city centre turned out to be a bit of a blessing since we were able to move in and out of the city with ease during the weekend that the Tour de France took place and traffic was generally a mess in the city.
The distance from the city centre is not too far and can be walked if you decide to do so although we decided against it and asked the hotel staff to arrange a taxi to take us to the city in the evening in order to have dinner and a few drinks. The hotel staff arranged the taxi without any qualms and the managed even proposed that if we wanted, we could use his private vehicle to go to the restaurant. Something very commendable we felt since he did not know us apart from being guests in the hotel.
In general the staff were helpful and always friendly. The room we had was clean and neat and although one of the days it was not serviced, it was not too much of a problem. As I mentioned, the weekend was the weekend that the Tour de France took place in Epernay and the hotel was filled to the rafters.
Two things that were a bit negative during our visit was the fact that there was no Internet access for the whole weekend and although our unit was fitted with a stove and microwave, there were no plates, glasses, cups cutlery or anything. it did however have a nice larger than normal hotel/bar fridge.
The view of the courtyard was better than the normal hotel view although a view of the countryside would have been better. The hotel lies close enough to the outskirts of the city to provide very nice views of the surrounding countryside.
The weather was nice and pleasant during the weekend but I believe that the rooms can get very hot during the summer as there are no air conditioners fitted.
Parking was free and plentiful notwithstanding the fact that the hotel was fully booked.

Room Tip: Request a room with views of the countryside.

Lovely building externally but cheap and nasty inside. My suite had a kitchen but no plates, cutlery, coffee mugs, glasses or anything else. There is no information book, no basic BBC or CNN type channels, no shower (only a bath and hand held spray). There is no air conditioning so in summer make sure you are on the parade ground side. The other side is the 'oven' side! Free internet is offered but it is frustrating in the extreme. Some times you get thrown off every two minutes, sometimes you have to watch a French ad to be allowed to continue and it's not fast enough to even do FaceTime audio let alone video. It is on the edge of Epernay so you need transport. On the plus side it is quiet, breakfast is good, outlook is pleasant enough and parking is easy. It could have been really nice - but it isn't.

We had a couple of nights here and made the choice on a combination of the following factors, free parking, distance from town centre and previous choice hotel experience.
The directions to the hotel where poor but there was parking available when we arrived and found the correct building and the staff are pleasant, but from a British perspective these rooms are rubbish, the bed is almost at floor level and there is no bedside table/storage. The rooms are also in need of some basic maintenance and a refurbishment and some equipment in the kitchenette, there was not even a teaspoon.
If you need an overnight stop on the way somewhere I am sure this hotel would be fine, but it’s no good for a stay of a couple of nights or more.

Room Tip: Choose a different accommodation.

This is an army barracks converted into a Comfort Inn. It feels a bit like a college dorm. There are 2 large rectangular buildings and a third in the center belonging to some sort of governmental office. There is plenty of parking and open treeless grounds in the back - former parade grounds? The suites are large, furnished Ikea style with a table, chairs, couch (the tough American dorm room type), microwave and usable small refrigerator (ie. not stuffed with items for sale), sink and a full bathroom and the bed in a loft connected by a spiral staircase. Our big French double windows went up to the second floor and opened easily. This place is not cozy or charming, the internet did not work well, some people appeared to be living there while they worked nearby. It was fairly empty and quiet. Great place to book a busload of students. This is also the perfect place for someone traveling with dogs or children, who need the space, and kitchen facility.

Room Tip: It probably doesn't matter unless they expect a busload - better to be tucked far from that poss...

The welcome by the reception was very friendly and in good English. The rooms are quite basic.
By the renovation they've made a choise of cheaper materials and white collors, because of this the rooms are looking quite cold and have no charm, it feels like armyrooms.
The breakfast was good with a big variety, only the breakfastroom looks like a cafeteria.
For us it didn't really matter, we didn't come to the champagne area to sit a whole day in the room.
We got a good price, got 3 nights, and only had to pay 2.
Location is +/- 2km out of the center, but we brought our bicycles, what took us no more than 10min.
