This is a very interesting visit. The Mercier family has done an excellent job developing their Champagne business, and the visitors' center is first class. The caves that they sculpted out of chalk are unbelievable, not only practical but also beautified by the use of art.
The champagne that they produce is also excellent, and you will surely enjoy tasting it!

You get an audio guide in the language of your choice to follow the whole experience. Initially view the magnificent giant barrel in the entrance hall, then a short illustrated lecture followed by a trip on the little underground train around a couple of kilometres of champagne storage tunnels. Finally a tasting in the shop/salon. The guides and attendants speak excellent English as well as other languages and are very conversant with the champagne history and processes. Well worth 11 euros.

We were a bit dubious about this tour as we had read negative reviews, however we thoroughly enjoyed it. It seemed very fair value for money. It was both informative and extremely entertaining - Eugene Mercier was clearly a great eccentric! It is a nice mix of factual information and Disney style fun and offers a different insight into 19th century social history. If you are interested in wine and history this is a good tour for you.

The guided tour is done in a train with an audio guide. There is a hostess with you in the train, who had few comments here and there, however the commentaries are mostly through the audio guide.

It is very commercial, you can see that they are really trying to sell you their Champagne. The information provided in the audio guide is nothing more than what you can find online. So the only value of the tour is to see the immense cellars, which you can also see at De Castellane, where the tour is better, more personal, and more interesting.

The price of the ticket included the audio-guided tour of the cave and a glass of their Champagne, or two or three depending on the price you pay.

Today we spent a little time in Bouzy a small village near Epernay tasting various Grand Cru Champagnes. We then came back to Epernay & tried Mercier who we were told had the best tour. If you like commercial & over priced guides then this is for you. If you like authentic, charming & taste the avoid. On Avenue de Champagne is a little house at number 51 called Paul-Etienne Saint Germain is lovely house which family have had only 3 years, they are a stones throw from Mercier & their champagne is twice as good. Try.
