Auberge Champenoise
Ranked #11 of 14 Hotels in Epernay
Reviewed 3 June 2014

The Auberge is a typical old fashioned French country hotel. We were really pleased to have foung such a lovely place to stay, with all the ambience not found in modern plastic counterparts. I am glad such hotels still exist. The rooms were of a good size with plenty of hot water in the shower room. Beds a bit hard, but to be expected. Dinner was well cooked, but on the pricey side. We paid extra for a good breakfast of eggs, cold meats, bacon, cereal, fruit, pastries and much more. Plenty of secure off read parking. The village is really quiet, just off the main road and close to Epernay. This is a good base from which to explore the Champagne trail.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet. Those on the second floor are somewhat smaller, but newer.

Well we went here last year and we returned this year for the same reason. Its simply the least expensive place in the best location for the wine tasting event we were attending.
Once you've got over the plastic pod shower rooms and brightly coloured 70s/80s decor, it's really not that bad. There are lots of interesting bits of Champagne memorabilia doted around and the staff are friendly. The rooms were spotlessly clean.
This year we ate out in Epernay rather than at the hotel which I think was quite a good decision.
They do seem to host lots of events here so be aware that, if you're a light sleeper, it may not be ideal.
If we go to the wine tasting next year we'll probably book here again. Not with a huge amount of enthusiasm, but compared to other places to stay in Epernay, it does leave us with more to spend on the wine!

Room Tip: For a quiet night don't chose a room overlooking the car park!

We failed to make reservations for the Epernay Reims area of France early enough and found this Auberge through Tripadvisor. It's rated 3-stars, but I don't know who's giving out the stars! The Auberge itself is quaint and has obviously been added on to over the years. Our room had enough room, but the bathroom was ridiculous! It was a molded fiberglass affair that looked like it had been pulled out of a mobile home and dropped into our room. The shower consisted of a cloth curtain pulled across one corner. My large-shouldered husband had quite a time with this. Plus it has the old-fashioned tube style hair dryer, which took my thick hair forever to dry. Having said all this, the price was very reasonable (61 Euro a nigh) and the the restaurant, which we ate at each of the three nights of our stay, had surprisingly excellent food and a very nice wine list. There is a bar out front, with the blind bartender/owner, but we found the bar to be a very local watering spot and not anything we were interested in. They do have an inside bar/lounge with a nice seating area, but it wasn't open during our stay, for some reason. Too bad as it would be much nicer than the bar.

Have stayed here many, many times since 1986, sometimes for a few days, sometimes an overnight stop. Always efficient and friendly service and excellent food. Very good value. In a quiet village south of Epernay, the capital of Champagne. Warning! If you want a good night's sleep, don't go on a Saturday night as they hold a dinner dance that goes on until the early hours and lots of noise of guests departing!

It was already the second time we stayed in this hotel, the staff is friendly and helpful. The food is great and the house champagne is one off the best off the smal champagne house that i drunk.
Next year when we go back to the champagne region we sertently go back to the auberge champenoise.

Stayed here for a week in July 2013. Lovely hotel with great staff and nice varied food for breakfast and dinner.
The house champagne is very good, the barman/ owner is incredible.
It is also a nice walk into Epernay (and a stagger back if you over indulge).
Great play area for kids (and me).

My ideal French country inn.

I stayed here on a cycling holiday as part of a fairly large group. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Of particular note was the barman who was blind. I hadn't realised this the first night so wondered why he put my drink in front of someone else. He managed to serve everyone pretty much perfectly though and was happy to top your glass up if he hadn't filled it enough.
Meals were tasty and substantial enough to keep us going through a week of cycling. The inclusive wine may have helped.
The rooms were comfortable with ensuite toilet/shower, kettle and TV although I never had a chance to try the TV.
