“Very nice surprise”
Reviewed 26 May 2014 via mobile

Found the hotel to be very well equipped and modern. The dinner was excellent and was well prepared. Highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a nice stay. Nice location on the river and good walking and running path.

Mercure is a mid market hotel chain that I find does everything well. Their Reims hotel was a modern hotel, easy to find and near the centre. It had good parking under the hotel, the rooms were excellent and the restaurant and bar area were comfortable. The food in the restaurant was very good-I had beef bourguignonne-lovely and rich and my partner had fish which she liked. The wine was expensive. We found little to attract us to the restaurants in the town. They appeared either up market and expensive or less expensive but without any character/atmosphere. Maybe we did not venture far enough away from the hotel. In my view, Reims is a place for an overnight stay on your way north or south within easy reach of Calais. The Mercure is a good hotel for this purpose.

We had a lovely stay in Reims, the view from the hotel over the river and city were gorgeous. The room was well equipped, clean and comfortable. Our only complain was that the corridors/hallways were exceptionally hot, making the long walk from the elevator to the room uncomfortable.

This hotel is ideally located to explore the city. It has been a favourite of mine for visiting family and business alike. It is reasonably comfortable, though it has a great failing in that there are no baths in the bathroom. It's ok for an overnight, but for the price one expects a bit more, especially when there is ample room for a bath where the enormous shower is. The restaurant was average, and the service was inconsistent which was a major change from before. Sometimes good, but twice my decaf coffee never arrived, so I resorted to the machine. The bar is good and service amazing there, the barman recognised me from 2 years ago! Beware that the car park is very small. I failed to find a space there twice over three days, luckily there is a public car park outside down the service road, which is free at the weekend, though unsecured of course.

A hotel which we used for a one night stopover. Underground secure (charged) parking but we couldn't get in as our Range Rover is too tall! Limited above ground parking. The room was comfortable if a little cramped but did have tea making facilities. The shower flooded the bathroom floor no matter what we did. The corridors were too, too hot.
The redeeming feature of the hotel was the restaurant. We usually avoid hotel restaurants if there are alternatives near by, but on walking around the area we didn't see any restaurants we fancied so headed back to the hotel. I chose from the weekly recommendations menu and my husband went a la carte. The meal was excellent, well balanced, imaginative, well cooked and presented. Perhaps the waitress another reviewer has mentioned is no longer there, all the waiting staff were male, service not too friendly, but prompt and polite. We didn't have breakfast so I can't comment on that.

We were staying at the Mercure Cathedrale hotel on the 8th of March, we had not eaten when we got to the hotel but due to a very long journey we did not arrive until approximately 9.30pm. Unfortunately there was a problem with the room card to enter our room which meant we were unable to get to the restaurant until 9.50pm. We were met by a waitress (African/Caribbean member of staff at the restaurant approximately 5ft 8 inches tall with braided black hair) who showed us to our table. We were presented with a French menu which took us longer to translate, after two minutes the same member of staff came back to the table and asked 'what do you want to eat?', we said we needed an extra two minutes to understand the menu. At this point the waitress became very aggressive shouting 'tell me what you want to order right now! We all want to go home!', which we replied we could not fully understand the menu, she then responded 'you must order right now or the chefs will be going home and there will be no food, you cannot have any desserts!' and stormed off to get an English menu. So shocked and upset by the way she spoke to us we decided to leave the restaurant. We stated to her we would not be dining in this restaurant of which she replied 'fine!', I asked politely for her name of which she then deliberately ignored me and walked past hence why I was unable to get her name, however the receptionist said it could have been Sandra. Never in my life have I had such a rude waitress and I am appalled by the incident. If the staff wanted to go home precisely at 10pm the restaurant should stop serving at 9.30. If this is the type of service you get at the Mercure I will never stay again.
