At 65 and with unreliable knees, I had wondered if climbing the 200 plus steps up the tower would be worth it. it was!
I wouldn't have missed this for the world and it added a whole layer of understanding and appreciation of how the cathedral had been constructed, the characters displayed in its stonework and the amazing reconstruction work that had to be undertaken after the destruction in 1914. From gargoyles, to the gigantic Clovis, from our guide's careful description of the panorama spread below us to his detailed explanation of how the concrete supports hold up the roof, it was all so informative and enjoyable. My French is fairly basic but I could follow much of what he said and I'd encourage anyone wanting to get the most from their visit to Notre Dame to take the trip up those steps. My knees, by the way, were just fine!
