At 65 and with unreliable knees, I had wondered if climbing the 200 plus steps up the tower would be worth it. it was!
I wouldn't have missed this for the world and it added a whole layer of understanding and appreciation of how the cathedral had been constructed, the characters displayed in its stonework and the amazing reconstruction work that had to be undertaken after the destruction in 1914. From gargoyles, to the gigantic Clovis, from our guide's careful description of the panorama spread below us to his detailed explanation of how the concrete supports hold up the roof, it was all so informative and enjoyable. My French is fairly basic but I could follow much of what he said and I'd encourage anyone wanting to get the most from their visit to Notre Dame to take the trip up those steps. My knees, by the way, were just fine!

Well worth the effort of climbing the 249 stairs to the top of the tower. The views over Reims are stunning and the roof structure of the Cathedral is a sight to behold. We were told the tours were only in French but when the tour guide realized that we were all English speakers he did the tour in English. Full marks to him as he was very informative

81 meters high towers adorn this incredible Cathedral which recently celebrated 800- anniversary. The building is magnificent and it survived the numerous wars loosing its stain-glass windows and suffering some structural damage in WWI. But that allowed for the replacement done by masters and now you can see Axial chapel stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall in 1974 and Apse window by Imi Knoebel in 2011. The financial support from the Rockefellers also contributed to the rebuilding of the Cathedral. The history of this building is fascinating so it is good to do some reading about it in order to get a good feel for it through the centuries. It is one of the most impressive churches of Europe.
