I think we got great value from our overnight at the Hotel Porte Mars. Our room, #35, faced the front, but was quiet, thanks to two double paned windows. We could look out to see the actual Roman Gate, and people moving about late in the day and early on their way to work. The bathroom was spotless, the separate toilet the same, furnishings were quite nice, the bed was comfy, and the ceiling mounted AC system masked the occasional sounds of other guests in the Hotel. Front desk was light on English, but long on enthusiasm; she directed us to a great restaurant a few blocks away, and have us coupons for a discount at the Mumm Caves. We skipped breakfast, which cost extra, and popped down the street for pastries and coffee. Good location or of the city center. And easy access by car, with free parking (overnight until 9 am) on the street just around the corner.

A short walk from the train station and opposite one of the ten 'sights to see in Reims ", the Hotel Porte de Mars is ideally placed for a Eurostar weekend in Reims. The staff are friendly, helpful and speak English. The rooms are small but clean and well organised. Breakfast is excellent. Highly recommended for a short stay.

The location is terrific. If you drive you are right on the main street when you come in from the autoroute. And the public parking is in the street right next door. Also, the hotel too offers their garage for medium and small cars at an extra charge of course.
If you train it, the station couldn't be closer. Our room (#31) had a view of the cathedral though temporary slightly eclipsed by the huge white circus canopy. Porte de Mars are just across the road.
The hotel itself is small, could do with some renovating and modernisation. Tiny lift and some pink plastic(ky) chairs which didn't please me much. Bathrooms are tiny though very well equipped with even a sewing kit and shoe sponge (that rather impressed me!). Caution: if booking triple, I would suggest to not go by their recommendations. We travelled with our daughter and they put in an extra bed which finally resulted in only one of us being able to exhale at one time. And of course with the extra bed, and furniture rearrangements, there was not a lamp which we could plug in as all plug points were hidden behind the beds.
Staff is excellent. Email response and welcome is charming and extremely helpful.
The room and corridors could be cleaner. We had some wax like beads strewn over one side of the floor and the carpeting looks a little mouldy (but far from intolerable).

Room Tip: Road facing rooms have a view of the cathedral but not exceptional as it is quite some distance. But...

My husband and I chose this property because of its convenience to the train station, which was an easy walk with wheeled luggage. It was an easy walk to the Mumm Champagne house, as well as to the city centre and the fabulous cathedral, and the staff were happy to give us good directions and mark attractions on a map, making sure we understood. Reception staff spoke excellent English and could not have been more friendly or helpful. There was an elevator, and our room was comfortable and clean, and a reasonable size. Double glazed windows minimised any noise from the road outside. The staff were more than happy to mind our luggage for the day after we checked out, before our train to Paris in the evening. Cool shoe polisher at each floor near the stairs.

So let me start with my mixed feelings about Hotel Porte Mars's location. Yes, it is within easy walking distance of Reims' train station; however, if you have a rolling bag, as I did, it is a it of a challenge to maneuver it over the cobblestones and other rough spots in the sidewalk. It is also not far from the center of town, and many of the city's attractions; but it is on a big highway, and across the street from a park that is dead all the time (except right now for the weekends when a fair with rides and such is running). So walking from the hotel to the city's restaurant row for dinner and back in the dark was a bit hair-raising.

These misgivings aside, we had a very nice two-night stay at Porte Mars recently. The afternoon/evening desk fellow, Nicolas, was unfailingly friendly and helpful. His cheerfulness was contagious! And our room was of a decent size - we had a superior room, with a little more space than the average room, which was great for me, because I am a larger than average fellow. And the windows were double paned, which meant we heard no rushing of cars along the street or noisy fair rides.

The best thing may have been the breakfast. We told them the night before when we expected to be down, and there was a table with our name on it waiting for us! Nice variety of fruit and breads and yogurt and cold cuts and eggs - there is even a boiling station where you can make soft boiled eggs - if you ever figure out exactly how long it takes to make the perfect egg, please let me know!

What a lovely hotel with great staff. We arrived early, but our room was ready and we were able to check in. The young man at reception was always smiling and ready to help with any question or query. He recommended two restaurants which were both fantastic. He and his colleague arranged for a tour of the MUMM Champagne cellars and they even provided us with a card that gave us a discount.
We had a twin room. It was tiny, but lovely. Very clean and decorated very nicely.
We had breakfast one morning. There was plenty of choice, but if you are just looking for coffee and croissants, this breakfast is a little expensive. Otherwise it is reasonably priced with a good selection. We parked on the street which turned out to be cheaper than using their parking garage. Street parking is payable Mon-Sat from 9-noon and 2-7pm. I don't remember the exact rate, but the whole weekend cost us 8 euros for the times we were parked.
Very close to the cathedral and across the street from the market. There is lots to do in walking distance.
Highly recommended!
