Description: To drink, squire! With such a name (the constable was a count charge of the royal stables) is expected to find a medieval tavern in the heart of the Marais. And indeed, it is not so far: this mansion of Cardinal de Retz is a living character with exposed beams, HQ night owls of all ages. During the day, the Constable shows a different face: that of a chic restaurant Marais. First we do not walk on it, the atmosphere is cozy, the older crowd and the room upstairs is open. In true French culinary tradition, the menu offers meat and fish sauce well (such as sliced turkey with porcini mushrooms) generously accompanied by fried potatoes with garlic and good structured wine. Here we love local products quality and taste rather than dietetics is favored. The addition is a bit salty, but still reasonable for the area. “Most horrible dining experience ever!”
Reviewed 24 December 2013

We passed Le Connetable during the week and found it quite cozy after a quick peek. This is why we decided to go in. First impression; the restaurant smelled funny (a scent of toilet refresher was dominating), but the elder waitress (perhaps the owner?) and the other waiter seemed friendly. After being seated we decided to both go for the menu of € 22,-. There were three other tables with guests in the restaurant. Not long after we've placed the order, two more tables were filled and the waitress smiley mood seem to change into a cold harsh one. My first dish was soup, it was quickly put (almost smashed) on the table. The waitress didn't gave us a look at all. The soup tasted weird. Somehow I can't recall what made it taste weird.... My second dish was duck. The sauce that came along was thick and salty. The duck was overcooked what made it tough to chew. I got quite ill due to the first soup bites. Yet I didn't wanted to insult the cook so I decided to finish it. After the first bite of the duck, I started to feel more ill. I didn't wanted to come over as a cry baby so I took one more bite. Then I stopped. I got so ill, so my boyfriend asked for the bill. He explained to the waitress that I got ill (leaving out it was due to the food). She fetched the bill and to our surprise she charged the whole menu two times, and our drinks. We asked her why she charged us for the whole menu since we didn't received our desserts. Without looking at us the waitress continued cleaning dishes at another table, she waved with her hands towards us and said something like: "OK, so ..price (a price minus 8euros of the bill, which meant not even minus two desserts). We got a little startled by her reaction and wanted to talk to her. She came to our table to continue the payment. We wanted to strike a conversation about the bill and wanted to explain that I got ill due to the food. Unfortunately without any succes. She didn't let us finish speaking. She spoke through us and left off mad. She made quite a big scene. We followed her and my boyfriend decided to pay and explained to the other waiter what the situation was. We also explained that we were willing to pay but we were not happy with her reaction. The waitress came back and she threatened us with calling the police. This is where I got really mad. She started to yell at us, while we haven't been yelling up until then. The other waiter told us to calm down. But we were really unhappy with the situation. My boyfriend told me that he just wanted to pay so we could get out of that place. The waitress walked away all the time which made it impossible to pay quickly. After quite a while we could pay and we are left with a horrible experience.

“Good value standard French fare”
Reviewed 8 December 2013

This place is a good option for rich, heavy, traditional bistro standards. My husband enjoyed this place far more than me. I found the service a little cold and the food a little over seasoned but all in all a good value choice. I liked the feel of the old fashioned rustic room. The bathroom (and I never feel moved to comment on such things normally) was a tiny under the stairs affair that really did need a bit of attention.

“Beautiful food, relaxed atmosphere, great service”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Very pleasant little local restaurant in the Rue des Archives. Other reviewers noted the after hours bar and late night activities. Perhaps we were too old and were safely home in bed by 10:30, but this was a great little restaurant. The only problem was that it was hard to tell if it was open or not. It looked quite rundown, and if it wasn't for a poster in the window advertising a band the previous night we'd have though it had closed up

It was a hot night, but we had a good table upstairs by the open windows and got whatever breeze was around.

The service and English was very good, and the menu was also high quality. Can highly recommend the duck. It was wonderful, as was everyone else's meal.

Very reasonable prices, and as usual in these small restaurants, a small but well thought out wine list.

A great night

“Worth a Visit”
Reviewed 1 June 2013 via mobile

If youre happy with rustic decor, basic service with a smile but amazing authentic French food at a great price then go here. The staff are lovely, the building old with creeky furniture but the food we had was so tasty and totally local. We had the canard (duck) salad for entree, then each chicken mushroom and lamb shank confit which were both brilliant. If in the area or staying nearby would highly recommend this whole in the wall type reataurant.

My boyfriend and I are staying in this neighborhood and walked by this place a few times. So glad we decided to eat here the food and the service was superb! 22€ menu was the largest richest most delicious meal we have had yet. Great bottle of wine and our server was so sweet. Highly recommend
