We had some trouble with our stay at the Palma Hotel near the Gambetta Metro Stop in Paris.
Apart from a very smokey room (the kind where you sit on the bed and are immediately blanketed in that delightfully disgusting stale tobacco aroma), we were charged additional fees due to having booked online. We checked out 4 days earlier than expected as all the rooms were very smokey, and fellow travellers were of the 2am shouting at eachother variety. The manager was understanding of our checking out earlier (we gave 24 hours notice of our checkout), but extremely unhelpful with the "additional internet fees" we were charged by booking through the hotel's home page.
A word of advice - always book small Parisian hotels by telephone or direct email contact with the manager. We paid an additional booking fee + 10% of our initial (yup, all 7 days even though we stayed 3 nights) hotel fee. This initial fee is disguised as a deposit for your stay when you book. We were aware of the booking fee, but not aware that our "deposit" was actually an additional non-refundable fee over and above the hotel nightly rate.
Also the free internet as advertised on their website is a myth. There's no internet at this hotel to speak of. The Palma Hotel gets out of this scam by providing a free computer for guests in the lobby, but guess what, the only page you are permitted to access is the hotel website and do a Google search, but otherwise all pages are blocked. When I say all other websites, I mean it, not just the sites that are blocked for Europeans in general. You cannot access gmail, hotmail or yahoo. When my travel partner complained, the hotel manager said they were not willing to compromise their internet security.
