An unashamed Francophile, I've had Paris on my list for many years. I'll be honest, many a beau over the years promised to take me...but this trip was so important I had to wait for the 'right one' before allowing anyone to accompany me to a place I was so looking forward to visiting!
So I did...and it was perfect! He picked the hotel and I was so excited just looking at the pictures beforehand and definitely wasn't disappointed when we got there.
We walked from La Gare du Nord using Googlemaps on our phones and went a bit of a long way round...but eventually we arrived to be greeted by a very friendly (English-speaking if you don't speak French) receptionist.
The white, white wasn't as harsh as you might think once there. In fact to me it just felt very clean and gentle (sounds like soap!) with soft lighting in the room. We did (unfortunately?) have a faulty safe in our room but this only resulted in a free upgrade with minimum fuss to a lovely huge room on the top floor. We hadn't complained or anything...the receptionist just effortlessly told us we would be upgraded to a different room the next day...and we were!
Room service saw us ordering the staple of all room service menus...the club sandwich. We got one each of beef and chicken and shared them...they were absolutely delicious and well-earned after hours of walking around Paris.
From this hotel it's really easy to walk up to the Bastille where there are various cafes and some more familiar looking food outlets (McD's!) if that's what you fancy. There are open top tour buses available but we had trouble finding a place to jump on one. This turned out to be for the best though as we walked and did 'Paris' rather than just all the things IN Paris.
A walk along the Seine was beautiful, all the way up to the Eiffel Tower and then back along the other side of the river. After work couples and groups of friends sit alongside on the Rive Gauche with picnics, bottles of wine and plastic glasses. All very romantic and relaxing. There are plenty of supermarkets around selling plastic cups if you fancy joining them.
After all the walking this hotel was so relaxing to go back to. The staff were friendly but if you didn't want to see them you didn't have to. The room service was great as was the breakfast. Highly recommended. :)
