The location is great; next to a Metro station at the Place de Clichy, with lots of good restaurants. (Try seafood at Wepler.) Montmartre is in walking distance, and I even rolled my luggage to the hotel from the Gare du Nord (1 1/2 miles away), past the Moulin Rouge. Just across the street from the JG is a supermarket, "Simply City," with daily fresh fruits, tarts, and even fresh pastries (packaged), plus Le Bonne Maman jams and packaged Roquefort for you to buy to take home on your last day. ATMs abound. The staff is supremely nice and accommodating. I arrived during a July 2012 heat wave of daily temperatures in the 90s. Most cheaper Parisian hotels have no air conditioning and here even electric fans were scarce. But after a couple of days, good floor fans suddenly appeared in my and others' rooms, and at the front desk. I suspect management took pity on us all and got us new fans. Good for them. When I needed a computer print-out of a voucher for a tour to Mont Saint Michel I arranged online the night before the trip, the front desk had me just email them and they printed it out. They also let me into my room a couple of hours early when I first arrived (they will of course also take your luggage). I didn't try the 11 euro breakfast; it looked pretty good, though not really a bargain. The main drawback: the rooms are small, and so are the bathrooms (but they are private bathrooms). Bigger than Hong Kong rooms. Excellent value. Will change its name next year. Merci, chere Martine et Alexandra, pour votre service!

We spent four days in Paris and wanted a clean, convenient hotel room at reasonable cost, and this hotel met our needs just fine. We were only a couple of blocks from the Metro and bus lines, we found good restaurants, we walked a lot around Montmartre and at the end of each day we had a good rest. This hotel has friendly, English-speaking staff who were very helpful. The room was small, but we didn't plan to stay in it a lot, so that was not a problem. If you want to spend a lot of money for a big room, this is not your choice. If you want good service, a clean room and moderate cost, give this a try!

Paris hotels are not cheap, and so I think this hotel was good value for money. Really good location to the metro, clean room and incredibly friendly service.

There are loads of negative comments about the hotel, which I find odd. The negative comments seem to sit in 2 buckets: 1) size of room and 2) location.

1) Yes, the rooms are smaller, but if you want a bigger room then you need to pay a lot more. When I come to Paris for work, it tends to be triple the price for a marginally bigger room in the same area. It's just an expensive city, so you need to figure out your priorities and if staying inside all the time is one of them then this is not the hotel for you. But the room fits a double bed, table, chair, wardrobe and ensuite loo, so was all we needed. Plus it's very clean.

2) The location is seedy. This again comes down to personal taste. I don't think the street or even Place de Clichy to be seedy at all, but the area borders Pigalle and Monmartre. If you turn right you walk into Pigalle's notorious sex shops. If you carry on up the hill to Monmartre, you find yourself 5 minutes away from some of the best restaurants and enjoyable bars in Paris. In any case, if you offend easily then this is not the neighbourhood for you. But for me, I think it's a vibrant area with an amazing food market down the road and great proximity to going up the hill to Monmartre.

I never ate breakfast there, so can't comment on the food. There are loads of places near the hotel to get croissants and coffee for a fraction of the price.

For the price, location and state of the room, I am happy to recommend.

Dear Guests,

What you state is completely right, In Paris, the bigger the rooms are, the more expensive they get and usually travelers must aim at 4 and 5 stars hotel.
Our area, Montmartre, is one of the most atypical of Paris, with the best view of Paris, when you are up hill, the Basilica of Sacré Coeur, and down hill, the red light district of Paris with the sex shops. Welcome in Paris, that makes the specificity of Paris.
We thank you for recommending us, and we are looking forward to welcoming you soon.

Best Regards

We spent a weekend in this hotel and found it a great value when you're just looking for a clean room, comfy bed and convenient location. The rooms are small but cute. The service is very helpful and friendly; everyone spoke English well. Breakfast was a little disappointing as the room was very crowded and the serving plates were close to empty. Still, if we just need a place to sleep and shower, we'd stay again.

My boyfriend and I stayed in Hotel Jean-Gabriel for 4 nights on a budget long weekend break to Paris, and for what we paid it was worth it. Yes, the rooms are a bit small and the shower is definitely not for the claustrophobic, but if you're looking for a place just to sleep and get washed in whilst you explore Paris then you should consider staying here.

The hotel is in a great location - very lively with lots of nice cafes, restaurants and bars. I never once felt unsafe or uncomfortable in this area. The Moulin Rouge is around a 10 minute walk away, and the hotel is only about 2 minutes from Place de Clichy Metro, which takes you to the centre of Paris.

We found the hotel very easy to find; when you arrive in Gare du Nord, once you have your Metro tickets, walk through to the back of the station to La Chapelle Metro. From there, it's only 4 or 5 stops to Place de Clichy, which is a couple of minutes from the hotel.

The hotel staff were very pleasant and friendly, and responded well to our attempts to speak to them in French (they all speak great English though). We didn't partake in the breakfast - at 11 Euros it seemed a bit steep, plus there is a great patisserie nearby that does delicious croissants for around 1 Euro!

On the downside, the walls were paper thin (we could hear the lift running in our room), which may not be suitable for people seeking a bit of privacy.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top (5th) floor if you want to avoid street / traffic noises early in the morn...

Dear Guests,

First of all thank you for choosing Hotel Jean Gabriel for your stay in Paris. Indeed as we are in Paris, one should know that surfaces are very restricted in our beautiful city. We are situated only 15 min away by metro from Gare du Nord (juste one metro line and a few stops away) which make it very easy for travellers coming from the UK. Gare de l'Est, also is only 17 min by bus from the hotel and guests arriving from Germany, Belgium or Netherlands find it very handy.
Last but not least, our Buffet breakfast is composed with very nice fresh croissants, fresh bread, toasts, cheeses, eggs, ham, fresh fruits salad and french "rosette" ... this justifies the price of 11.00 € which is a good value.
We hope to see you very soon.

Best Regards

Hotel is a good base for exploring the city as close to the metro line place de clichy. The area itself is not of high standard as close to the moulin rouge, there are lots of sex shops etc in this area. It is a good area if you want nightlife, a few lively bars around here.
Our room was tiny, I felt very claustrophobic in the room, it would be okay for a single person but not a couple, it was difficult getting ready in such a confined space. The hotel has recently been refurbished, you can see that the old wood furniture and old wallpaper has literlally been painted and that is it. Our room was bright red and we had silver painted furniture, it was awful!
The hotel staff were really friendly and polite, they are willing to help you with directions and booking taxi's shows etc.
It was very difficult to sleep at night as there was constant noise, from the bin men at 6 o'clock in the morning to people in the rooms in the hotel or the noise of the constant traffic.
I have stayed in lots of 3 star properties accross European Cities and this was by far the worse, I would personally rate it 2 star. It is okay if you literally want somewhere to leave your belongings and freshen up,

The hotel is close to Place de Clichey metro making it very easy to get to. There are lots of shops and restaurants around this area too. The hotel is tucked away nice and quiet. The reception staff are very helpful, friendly and polite. They all speak good English too which was a great help. The room was quaint there was plenty of wardrobe space. The room size didnt bother us we were only there to sleep after all. The shower was a little on the small size but still served its purpose. The bed was nice and comfy and maid service was good too. The Moulin Rouge is only 5-10 mins walk (depending how big your heels are hehe) The top of Montmarte is also a must within walking distance again. The breakfast looked nice although we never had it there were so many other little restaurants around that had more choice for the same price. Overall a lovely little hotel in an excellent location that made a lovely romantic getaway perfect.
