Owner description: This beautiful museum, once a railroad station, now houses a staggering collection of Impressionist art, as well as other items created between 1848 and 1914. In 2011, the museum is running a renovation of the top floor (impressionist gallery). Only ground and medium floor are accessible. The top floor will re-open on the 20th of October. Meanwhile, some impressionist masterpieces are not visible.

The museum has a great collection of impressionist paintings on the 5th floor. The only downsides were that it is difficult to work out how to get to the 5th floor and their gallery of post-impressionist paintings was closed with some of the paintings available in an exhibition on the ground floor.

The long queue almost put us off, but we stuck with it and in less than 20 minutes we were indoors. This most beautiful building is very similar to the Grand Central Station in New York and is a must see, the roof is mind blowing.
Once you get over the internal appearance of the building you then need to plan your journey very carefully as there is just too much to take in on one visit, so prioritise your needs. They do have a route plan on entry, but we found it very difficult to follow and didn't manage to see everything. Thought the price was very realistic and there was some very nice cafés / restaurant to use.

I have been to the d'Orsay before, about 20 years ago, and while I enjoyed my return visit and highly recommend the museum, I found it very overwhelming almost to the point of being unpleasant. We had the Paris Museum Pass but still had to queue for the security line. Once inside, I found the newly renovated museum difficult to view efficiently, with lots of circling back and no clear indicators for how the galleries should be best viewed. In each (crowded) room you had people entering from both directions, circling and crossing back and forth to view the artwork and so the rooms were very congested. Upstairs in the obviously popular impressionist rooms, large tour groups would congregate in front of the paintings but the rooms were so small and the groups so big they would end up boxing out 1/3 of the viewable art. Also the museum was so crowded at lunchtime (even early) that all cafés and restaurants had massive lines. I would recommend to the museum that they consider limiting somewhat the number of people inside at any one time, and I would recommend to visitors that they come during the evening hours or late afternoon to avoid crowds and tour and school groups. Next time I would also bring my own snacks - we saw others had done this and found places where eating was permitted and I was super jealous!
