Owner description: A stone's throw from the city's most prestigious haute couture boutiques, the Musee Galliera is housed in a Renaissance-inspired palace. With its programme of temporary, themed exhibitions - legendary designers, fashion icons, clothing styles, influences and inspirations - the museum draws upon its priceless, often delicate archives to shine a light on the creative spirit which has inspired fashion from the eighteenth century right up to the present day. The museum has no permanent collections.

Not sure what will happen to the building once the exhibition closes, but I felt lucky to be there for it as I associate Paris with Alaia's clothes. Remember Grace Jones in a View to A Kill parachuting off the Eiffel Tower, some of the clothes she wore in the film are featured in the exhibition along with clothes worn by other famous ladies such as Naomi Campbell, Rihanna and Tina Turner.

This museum is almost always closed! But, I was lucky enough to see the Azzendine Alaia exhibit that is there now through January 2014 (I think). Take the green line Metro (9) to the stop before the Trocadero (if you are coming from the direction of the Louvre). We made a mistake and went too far and stopped at the Trocadero...which I'm so glad we did. The best unobstructed views of the Eiffel Tower! Back to the right stop and look for the signs for the Palais Galliera as well as the signs for the Alaia Exhibit. The building is beautiful and the exhibit was amazing, if small. There is another part to the Alaia exhibit housed across the garden, across the street at the Mus. d'Art Moderne de Paris. Alaia designed some costumes especially for the Matisse Room. I was never able to find the rest of the regular collection of the Musee de la Mode which is supposed to have Balenciaga, Chanel etc. I asked and asked but the responses I got were that just Alaia was out. Maybe you'll have better luck especially if your French is better than mine!

This had been given a big build up in its opening after years of being closed - so we didnt expect to see only a single exhibition, on part of one floor, and that was it! No other part is open so it was a bit disappointing. The exhibition is of clothing made by Alaia - it was captivating but disappointing that it was the only thing on-staff directed us to the museum of modern art across the road - it was mostly closed also. The Alaia exhibition cost 8 E which was quite a lot compared with the cost of other museums in town - and the museum of modern art is free but pretty sparse. So a long trip for an average result, when compared with other beautiful museums in town that are free (eg the exhibit on at the National Library).

Across the road from the Palais de Tokyo modern art museum which I was visiting. Only discovered by accident what was there, when I was curious about the small but unusual building in the park opposite. A small sign on the park gate shows the museum is closed for refurbishment. Who knows how long this will be in Paris. But is a delightful little building in an attractive park with the Eiffel Tower looming large closeby.
