“A truly charming stay”
Reviewed 17 June 2009

Yes, the rooms are small...this is Paris after all. My husband and I spent a few days here before leaving on the train for Avignon before our Viking River cruise and had a truly wonderful stay at this charming hotel. The central location let us go everywhere and after long hours of walking and exploring this was the perfect retreat. Their suggestions on the restaurant was fantastic. I do wish there had been instructions on how to use the phone...but all I had to do is ask. I would stay here again anytime.

After reading so many positive reviews about this hotel, I was very disappointed. The rooms were tiny, even for Parisian standards. the bathtub was too small to take a comfortable bath. The soaps and towels were all of low quality for a 4 star establishment.
When asking how much it cost to call the US from our room, the receptionist said 30 cents a minute, but it came out to be 30 cents per pulse, which is a whole different price.
One day when coming to the hotel room for a rest at about 4PM, the room was still not cleaned and the cleaning boy just started to clean it.
The breakfast is very minimal; a croissant, a few pieces of baguette and jam; no fruit, no cheese, no eggs.

I just took my daughter to Paris for her college graduation gift and we wanted to stay in the 6th because I had lived there as a student many years ago. We came upon this hotel through Trip Advisor and a recommendation. We were thrilled with it! The room is small but not for Paris standards. The hotel is beautifully decorated, the staff was warm and friendly and very helpful. Paris was a kinder and gentler place for me and part of that was due to this hotel.Location, location. location!!!!!!!!! It could not have been better. We could walk everywhere and cafes restaurants and SHOPPING was perfect. I would highly recommend this hotel.

We spent eight nights here in May and June on my first trip to Paris. Paid about $230 Euros daily for standard room with continental breakfast and view of the courtyard. Had a very nice time. The hotel is very well-located, small and quiet, with smallish rooms and bathrooms, but in tip-top shape. Good continental breakfast. Air conditioning worked well, which was needed some nights. Public areas were extremely nice, staff and service were absolutely great. Computer with internet service was free. They could sure benefit from a better tub-shower, but I realize Europeans have some problem with shower curtains. Still, we consider this hotel a winner.

Strictly in terms of comfort and amenities, the Abbaye must rate well below other 4-star hotels I've stayed at in France---even, most recently, in the provinces: Thin scratchy towels, tiny pouf pillows, no minibar to chill drinks in the room, no clock, no instructions on how to make phonecalls, inconvenient lighting (with bulbs burned out) and writing area. . . . A breakfast of bread served with tiny packets of industrial butter and tiny jam jars---Continental business class has a definite edge here.
But all of that is obviously considered secondary to the relentless Olde Worlde "charm": the hushed smiling obsequious greetings, newspapers in the paneled salon, tea and breakfast in the lovely garden. All of that apparently goes down very well with the largely American clientele---at the same time used to being cossetted, rather unsure of itself, and embarrassingly appreciative. [I'm sure the words "discreet luxury" appear in some article in Conde Nast Sophisticated Traveler]. If they enjoy sitting in the garden staring at an ivy-covered wall in preference to the rich street-theatre of neighborhood cafes, then they are well-served here. And the neighborhood fits well with this ethos: If the 5eme is the universities, and the 7eme the haute bourgeoisie and the museums, then the 6th is Sonia Rykel and Armani. . .
All of this would really be rather humorous if it were not for the outrageously steep rates, which take away any incentive for laughter.

The beauty of the hotel, the genuine warmth and caring of the staff and that little garden with the birds singing will always be one of our favorite memories of our romantic trip to France.

Charming, well located, 4 star hotel. Entire hotel is located on interior courtyards, so none of the rooms face the street, so all the rooms are quiet. Lobby and courtyard/garden in rear of hotel are very pretty. Free internet access via wireless in the rooms, plus a desktop off the lobby. Our room was very charming albeit small (about 12 sq meters), but very well laid out and serviceable with adequate closet space, good flat screen, etc; the bathroom was reasonably large in comparison. Very clean, good service. Service at the desk in the evening seems a little slower than during he day. Good quality croissant and coffee for breakfast, although not a full English breakfast that some others have begin offering in France. Would definitely stay here again if I was in Paris for a few nights.
